  • This is a full length video detailing the first rough pass for two 'twice turned' bowls made from cherry wood. This generally shows the full process in real-time, though I did edit out the time I spent switching or sharpening tools (who wants to see a lathe sitting there doing nothing for a few minutes, amiright?!).
If you would like to see the sped up version, please go here: • Twice Turned Cherry (2...
    The process goes like this:
True up the wood, then work on the tenon and bottom edge of the bowl. Next I create a rough, rounded shape which is an approximation of what it might end up becoming during the second turning. Then turn the bowl around (there is a song there somewhere) and work on hollowing out the inside cavity, leaving the walls nice and thick. Once dried, the thickness of the piece allows for a final pass after the wood has deformed and finished changing shape (usually into an oval shape). Overall the process for these two bowls took around 40 minutes.
