Nova Orion Update - My Thoughts on Two Different Lathes
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.7 месяцев назад
This is an update on how things have been going with the Nova Orion and a comparison to the Lagune Revo 18|36. Both models are the 110V version. One thing to note is the headstock on the Nova rotates while the Lagune headstock does not. Some people prefer the stationary headstock for different reasons, so please keep that in mind when deciding on investing in a wood lathe. I hope you find this ...

This is a full length video detailing the first rough pass for two 'twice turned' bowls made from cherry wood. This generally shows the full process in real-time, though I did edit out the time I spent switching or sharpening tools (who wants to see a lathe sitting there doing nothing for a few minutes, amiright?!). The Start of a BEAUTIFUL Relationship! - Nova Orion DVR Lathe - First Chips!
What 4” hose are you using? Mine are too stiff to control my hood in various places.
Sanding sealer would help with your tear out.
The arm he has listed no longer has the ability to remove the thumb screw and lift hood off. It is now a permanent attachment.
Hmm...looks like I may have to work through an update to see what will work for folks. Thanks for the heads-up!
@@nullcycle It does everything else bur remove. Fortunately that is not a problem for me since mine is mounter on a 2 x 4 stand.
Nice job - Love the narration & style - looking forward to seeing many more videos👍
Thank you for the feedback and stopping by!
Nice, I have something similar.
Sweet! I am looking to modify this a bit in the future, but it sure does well for general dust, especially when sanding.
Beautiful job
Thanks for stopping by!
Voice over is perfect. Love your explanation as you go along.
Thank you for the feedback!
I'm sure that tech heavy machines are the direction of industry travel , but I'd personally be very wary of the Nova. Electronics still have a rather short service life. Ask yourself how long your last laptop lasted?. 5 years seems to be about the limit of mine!. In 5 years time replacing the electronics in the Nova may well cost more than it's worth?. I have a Record coronet regent with it's sum total of electronic brains housed in a small easy to replace box & even that worries me a little. My Delta unisaw is now 24 years old and it'll likely keep working for another hundred years even when I'm long gone. Complex electronics and fine sanding dust are best kept in separate rooms, just saying!.
I hear what you are saying. Let's hope that it lasts a lot longer than a laptop! ;)
It's pronounced "padauk."
But is it really? Maybe it is "padauk" instead.
Beautiful piece!
DAN!!! Thank you for stopping by! So cool to see you on here!
Great idea!
Thanks!
Nice. You could try adding the extra weight to the sides and maybe you can eliminate the weight at the bottom to give you more clearance.
Great idea! Thanks for stopping by!
One more question about the Nova DVR lathes. Do you know if they offer lighting options or a mobile base as Laguna does?
I believe that Nova states on their website that they recommend against using a mobile base for their lathes. As for lighting, I have not really looked too deeply. Laguna has a number of accessories (like lighting) for their lathes, so if that might be a purchase point some would be interested in.
I’m sorry. I meant the Laguna 2436.
See my previous response. Thanks for stopping by!
It’s March 4, 2024. Do you have experience with the Nova Nebula that I’m comparing with the Laguna 2024? Thanks. Harv.
Unfortunately I do not. However, I do know the Nebula is similar to the Orion in many ways. I might even think of it as an upgraded version, but that might be a bit of a stretch.
Great idea, I used a double one of these (free ex work) overhead for a couple of cheap LED flood lights. I'm still trying to get decent dust collection so I'll probably give this a shot. Thanks.
I hope you find it useful! I am considering an alteration of this in the future for greater flexibility, so keep that in mind for how you choose to work with your setup. Cheers!
❤very nice❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks Don on that tip! 👍🏻
I am glad you found it useful! Cheers!
I have the original Nova/ Record power DRV-XP lathe and i love it, still going strong, the power loss compensation feature can't be beaten.
Awesome! Nothing better than a solid product!
Thanks for the review/comparison. Regarding the alignment of the tail stock - once you use the alignment tool, do you find that the tail stock remains aligned throughout the length of the bed? Same question for the Laguna. I make kit-less pens, and having a repeatable center for drill bits is critical… looking at both these lathes as an upgrade to my current budget tool. Thanks again!
In response to your first question, YES. Once aligned everything runs smoothly on the Nova. The Laguna headstock does not pivot so alignment is carried through from the factory. I have not ever heard anyone having issues with it unless it came from the manufacturer with an issue already. Glad I could help! I hope you get the machine that works best for your needs! Cheers!
I too went from an 1836 to an Orion. I like how the Orion spindle is about 4" taller which helped with bending over. I find the rotating headstock is a huge help for hollowing. As for the Orion being 110V, if you swap out the plug to 220V, it will be a 2HP machine. I agree that the Laguna has a better finish. You can upgrade the Orion firmware to the Nebula firmware also and have the drying mode on it. I did that at my home unit.
Love the feedback! Great info there! Cheers!
How hard was it to upgrade the firmware and how did you do it....I own an orion also. Cheers
@redbeardthepirate4720 pretty easy. Takes about 5 minutes between taking the hmi off, brining it to a PC, flashing it and reinstalling. 6 screws and 1 cable. We took off firmware access from the site as people were installing incorrect firmware and bricking their HMIs. Foe this though we could send the correct files if you email us.
Unfortunately my 50 year old Rockwell Delta is the only lathe that I see in my future. Great comparison Don.
I can totally understand! The Nova was my first big lathe so I have the feeling I will have it for a long time! Thanks for stopping by!
How have you found the lathe performance.s on heavy unbalanced pieces. I'm looking-glass at the same lathe or a laguna 18/36. I'm worried a bit about the nova's grunt with larger pieces
It actually does quite well! I have had the opportunity to directly compare between the Lagune 18|36 and this Nova lathe. My personal findings were that the Laguna did not have quite as much torque, but that could be a good thing in some cases. Both are wired for 110, so I am willing to bet 220 will be a bit beefier. The Nova has auto-switching capability for 220V whereas I think you have to get the 220 version of the Laguna if you want to go that route. Both are pretty hefty machines, with the Laguna being a bit heavier and with cleaner machining. However, the Nova has a direct-drive motor which was a selling point for me. It also automatically compensates for tool pressure by increasing the torque. The Nova did require just a small amount of clean up from shipping (there was a small hiccup with mine because of leftover stuff from machining and shipping). I am very happy with it! I hope that helps! One last thing! They both behave the same with unbalance wood, for what that is worth. The key is all in how you balance the piece and true it up. Outside of that they both perform very well.
This is awesome. What’s the pressure chuck you used at the end called?
That would be a set of Cole Jaws that fit onto a bowl chuck. There is a link in the description for one. Happy turning!
Beautiful!!!
Thank you!!
Great information and a nice looking bowl. Thank you, Don
I am happy you got something out of watching, and glad you liked it!
Beautiful ❤
Very nice piece Don.
Thank you!
That turned out awesome Don! 👍🏻 You do a great job explaining what you’re doing! 👌 I’ll have check out that tool you were using! Thanks for the heads up! Thank you for sharing your work!
I am glad you were able to get something out of the video! Have a great day!
Very nice looking piece.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video, Don. 👍
Thanks for stopping by!
I enjoy the talking i feel I learn more
I am glad to hear! Thanks!
Why that looks like an Orion....
It is indeed! I am really happy with it. :)
👍
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks Dan for your input on not so dry wood bowls! Be looking for part #2! Thanks for sharing and have a great Thanksgiving!
Thanks! You too!
Interesting, thanks. Where did you get the light on you tool rest?
I got it through Woodturners Wonders. This little light has been well worth the price! woodturnerswonders.com/products/eclipse-led-lathe-lamp?_pos=4&_sid=f0fe95a2c&_ss=r
Thank you for the teaching! But would like to hear the sound of the wood cutting- it just gives me another sense to use in knowing how & when to look out for trouble or delight.
Hi, and thank you for stopping by! Unfortunately I have a lot of dust collection running so it kind of ruins the option of providing the sound of the tool. It is also very hard on the ears so I always recommend wearing hearing protection. However, I will be posting a video that does have sound, so hopefully that works out ok. In the meantime, the general idea is that you want to avoid chatter or squealing. This is a direct indication that either your tool needs sharpening, or it is presenting at the wrong position relative to the wood. Either way you will want to pause and take action on one or the other or both. I hope that helps!
Great video, Enjoyed watching the revel of the the maple after you dug into the padauk. Keep it up.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by!
Nice work dude 🥰🥰
Thanks! 🙂
Hey how are you liking that lathe? I've got my eye on one but there really aren't many reviews beyond first impressions on
Hey that is a great idea for a video! I am very happy with the lathe and love some of the functionality, albeit with a few minor things I had to work through (as with any tool). I think a clip this very topic would be helpful! Thanks for posting!
Well done
Thanks! :)
Very pretty piece Don. It pronounced puh/duke.
Thanks for stopping by and checking it out! Glad you liked it!
I agree with this pronunciation.
Beautiful maple and padauk bowl Don.
Thank you!
That turned out beautiful Don! 👍🏻 I really like the two colors of wood you used! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much! Glad you liked it!
Great video! What bandsaw are you using looks pretty nice! One band saw tip, make a template of the circle and put it on the pf the bark side, and use a screw or awl to hold it in place. Then use the flat side to turn the blank. Also always try to keep your fingers away from the blade. When turning the log try to turn from the back. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks for the tip! I actually do that now with all my bandsaw work...gotta love learning! As for the bandsaw, it is a Laguna 14BX (220V motor). I love this thing. Very versatile! Cheers!
Stunning piece I love the colour really good video commentary too
Thank you! Cheers!
What Nova do you have? I have the comet 2, I feel like it might be entering the end of its life cycle. I'm getting crazy vibrations and bounce when turning. Looking to go to a bigger Nove or Grizzly.
Hello! I have the Nova Orion. I chose this particular model at the time because of the direct drive and horsepower (not to mention the digital interface control that makes Nova lathes fun to use). The newest model they sell is the Nebula and is very comparable to this model. I hope that helps!
@@nullcycle Awesome thanks 👍
Станок хороший.....
Thanks!
I just bought that machine, thanks for the info. Nice work. Had Nova II 16x24
Awesome! I hope you enjoy using it as much as I enjoy mine! Cheers!
Nicely done. Beautiful
Thank you very much!
