Woodturning - White Cedar Bowl

- I grabbed a piece of white cedar I had in my basement I pulled from my yard a couple of years prior. At the time of recording, this was the largest bit of wood I had attempted to turn on my lathe. Engage learning curve!!

?This was the first time I've seen your channel. I like that there's no music in the background and that you do what I think is called voice over. It makes it nice and peaceful and calm. This is a gorgeous piece of wood. You did an excellent job.

Thank you for the teaching! But would like to hear the sound of the wood cutting- it just gives me another sense to use in knowing how & when to look out for trouble or delight.
Hi, and thank you for stopping by! Unfortunately I have a lot of dust collection running so it kind of ruins the option of providing the sound of the tool. It is also very hard on the ears so I always recommend wearing hearing protection. However, I will be posting a video that does have sound, so hopefully that works out ok. In the meantime, the general idea is that you want to avoid chatter or squealing. This is a direct indication that either your tool needs sharpening, or it is presenting at the wrong position relative to the wood. Either way you will want to pause and take action on one or the other or both. I hope that helps!

Very pretty! I think you chose the right finish, as well. I’m in the no music camp, also. Sometimes it enhances the video, other times it’s just annoying. I find it’s better just to leave it out and not run people off haha. I’d rather hear the tools cutting anyway. Nice job👍🏻

No grease. Use a nylon washer, works great. Grease has a tendency to get everywhere.

The deep cracks mean that this piece should not be used for food (especially soup) since it is pretty well impossible to clean properly. Walnut oil can be an allergy risk for some people even after much use. Beautifully done. Thank you.

Great piece, and I really appreciate that you share your process. BTW, I found that a nylon washer solves the problem of the jaws sticking to the spindle.

Nice job. Try making a donut chuck for removing the tenons. They work good for many size bowls with little investment.

@@nullcycle They are easy to make using scrap plywood and some long carriage bolts.
Great video! What bandsaw are you using looks pretty nice! One band saw tip, make a template of the circle and put it on the pf the bark side, and use a screw or awl to hold it in place. Then use the flat side to turn the blank. Also always try to keep your fingers away from the blade. When turning the log try to turn from the back. Keep up the great videos!

Pretty bowl. I pretty much always get some wobble when I turn the piece around. You might try applying pressure with tail stock while you tighten.

What I do to keeping back plate from sticking I use a piece of cardboard as a washer to prevent sticking,I’ve had the same piece of cardboard on for years

I prefer the narration over music. However background music is necessary if no narration. In Washington we have large cedar trees that look just like this. It is very very soft so I don't turn it.

Ohhh hey... that's on Orion... You can flash it for the Nebula firmware and get the finishing mode if you want. As for the slight wobble after turning, that's just part of the process. When you clamp on the jaws, it changes the wood very slightly so it's not perfectly centered. Same as when you start off turning between centers and then go to a chuck, or any time to reverse a piece.
Oh...that is great info. I will take a look at flashing the firmware. Thank you for the info regarding the wobble as well. This gives me more of a reason to look further into a reverse chuck adapter for the tailstock. Cheers!

@@richdbolduc What is flashing firmware. I have an Orion but I have never heard that phrase.
@@dianadougherty7187 The firmware is the software that controls the machine and user interface. "Flashing" just means reprogramming it. So by "flashing" the Orion with the Nebula firmware, you're giving the machine the functionality of the Nebula's software
Your face plate should have come with its own spanner for removing it from the machine.
Interesting...unfortunately they did not. I kind of feel like I didn't get my whole order...LOL! However, that does give me an idea. Thanks for that bit of info!

Problem here was presentation and sharp tools when the piece stalled. I have definitely learned my lesson there!
