  • There's a Toasted Marshmallow Day. Go figure. I had some old material on the Star Trek V novelization that've had for ages, so I added it to an old video on Spock's Marshmallow (or "Marsh Melon") Dispenser from Star Trek V The Final Frontier. Now is as good a time as any to release.

      Most of the time the siblings or relatives of the main cast are incidental side characters that don’t do much outside of existing, unless they are important for plot convenience. Sybok is not your typical random relative, he’s Spock’s half brother who happens to be a full blooded Vulcan that not only relishes being emotional and being ostracized from Vulcan society, but he also forcefully mind melds with others to convert them to his ‘cause’ of seeking some meaning or ultimate purpose to existence instead of leaving others to their own free will to determine their lives. Sure, he’s like the Anti-Spock, and narratively it makes slot of sense to given Spock even more motivation to be ‘as Vulcan as he can be’ besides the taunting he received in childhood, but to make Spock’s long lost brother a super villain terrorist is pretty shocking. That kind of stuff is usually reserved for Evil Twins like Lore and Thomas Riker.

    • @katakisLives
      @katakisLives 2 года назад +3

      Exactly. From Spocks point of view there was no logical reason to mention Sybock

  • @andygrams6344
    @andygrams6344 2 года назад +4

    So good. Reminded me how much the STV book gave good explanations on various plot elements - like breaking the great barrier was not simply good intentions, but actually because Sybock was smart and figured out a new shield equation, and it also got intercepted by the Klingons. Also reminded me of the heartbreak of a 9-year old fan when my marshmellon dispenser never came in the mail as promised. Brilliant video.

      I wish I could remember the video I saw this in, but there was a Scottish RUclipsr who blew my mind about Scotty's accent. Doohan based his accent on a guy he served in the military with who was from this one particular town in Scotland, and that Scottish RUclipsr had a teacher from that town whose accent sounded just like Scotty's accent, so apparently it was an accurate imitation of just one very specific Scottish accent from a specific town.

I had no initial interest in the device, but after seeing the film on VHS, I remembered seeing the device on the back of packages, for a while. In fact, quite a while afterward, I saw one on Ebay, and it appealed to me. I had remembered seeing one of the old packages at Kroger. There was only one left. I then found a couple, at a drug store. All three packages were rock hard. I sent them in & sure enough, they sent the device back, along with the note. It seemed to be a different model. Instead of the sliding door, it had a removable cap. It had a wide platform & opening, that was powered by a rubber band.

    • @pepperVenge

      @@dougc190 That's because those ships were built specifically for war. When the war ended, they didn't need that many ships, which is why they were decommissioned so early.
      The Federation wasn't at war, so why build a new ship only to decommission it 7 years later?
      Also, the time between the destruction of the Enterprise 1701, and the launch of the 1701-A was probably not enough time to build a brand new ship.
      And the Constitution class was an out dated design by 2286. Starfleet had better designs by then. If they had built a new Enterprise, it would have likely been an Excelsior class, which is exactly what happened in 2293, which is why they decommissioned the Enterprise-A.

    The dispenser was built with a pure duranium hull to protect your three favorite marshmelons from the ROOOOCKS that accompany routine console explosions.

    Kirk approving these "marshmelons" when he was an Admiral would explain actually how he ended up promoted again in Star Trek II after demoting himself in The Motion Picture. Bear with me. The marshmelons were produced via genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is explicitly banned in the Federation, still feeling the sting of the Eugenics Wars. So when word got out that Kirk had approved the genetically-altered marshmelons, he was taken out of the field and put back behind a desk as punishment.

    The marshmallow dispenser video is maybe my second favorite only losing to ST fonts. Although I've seen it before I'm completely fine with you starting every video with it and then ham-fisting a segue into whatever the actual video is about!

    had a thought since I have seen the last video but didn't think it was worth commenting till now, but my thought is that the marshmallow (marshmellon) Dispenser is not a dispenser/carrying case its an on the go marshmallow maker so this tool can possibly make a whole bags worth before you need to refill it or recycle it, it is the future after all.

    I suspect that the dispenser is a general purpose, mini portable food synthesizer, with battery supply and concentrated protein/sugar/carb/fat stores for creating a variety of foods on the go/"Off grid"

    Jesus, you’ve mastered the art of saying less the more you speak.
    Also: I had one of those. You could fit four, you just had to compress them in. This actually helped to get them out later.

    Hey man. as u can obviously see my name is Joe and im born and raised in New York but currently reside in South Florida while that info is unnecessary just wanted to say thanks so much for this bonusish video.... currently I'm packing my few belongings to take to work with me tomorrow as due to some racism care of some jerky nothing beeter to do than be nosey dbag neighbors my roommate and myself are being softly evicted due to us(im native American and roommate is Phlippino)not being of Central American decent ...again unnecessary information but in my head its relates to core themes of Star Trek and the joy this awesome channel brings its subscribers
    1. I wish the single minded goal of the betterment of mankind as a whole that people evolved too that good ole Gene envisioned I kinda wish that was the case now that despite being a nice, helpful,respectful neighbor always helping the non nosey friends/neighbors in my now former cul-de-sac that also always pays the rent early/on time i might add...I really wish that part on Genes vision was true now especially in todays climate and my current poopy situation
    2. i haven't found a place to go to like at all yet but hopefully something will happen like a friend or coworker allows me to crash on a couch or floor just until one of the 3 places i viewed and applied for opens up... so the stress and worry ill be dealing with was wearing on me heavily but thankfully I took a break packing to see a new tranny (post) from JunkBall.... so after enjoying the video(despite it being a repost kinda... i also enjoyed the original post back in 2017... the George Takei impressions(that Scotty tho...) mixed as always with your awesome sense of humor about good ole Star Trek was a welcome and needed escape for just a few minutes has given me this welcomed yet weird sense of calm from the stress....sorry for the long winded venting but I really just wanted to say thanks and my bad if this made zero to no sense but again just wanted to say thanks man... i need that escape. Please keep up the great work on this channel and so void of Spocks precious logic what an impractical way to transport exactly 3 "marshmelons" but at least peeps will know one fucks with Star Trek. and thanks again for the extra few transmissions cant wait for the DS9 content looking forward to your thoughts/opinions/analysis on Sisko and company. The station itself is great force to be reckon with and all but the Defiant was such an awesome addition as Riker says is a" tough lil ship"(cue pissy Worf face...Adam Scott survived to be beamed aboard the Enterprise I always hoped). again sorry to use your comment section to vent.

    I really enjoy that McCoy went to these lengths to get Spock to call a food by the wrong name. Like, THAT'S your big payoff? You reprogrammed the ship's computer so you could hear Spock say marsh melon?

    Ah the marshmellow dispenser. I did whatever you had to do to get one back in the day. Maybe it was something like send a few UPC into Kraft. Rather useless as a treat dispenser, but I found plenty of uses for it as a toy.

    Oh my dreams are shattered, shattered I say. I always imagined the device MADE marshmelons .. I mean marshmallows .. on demand. Look they are simply a mix of sugar, flavor and air. So if if you put the right materials in the device, press a button, and it builds a MM just like a 3-D printer tossing in air as it goes. Out comes a nice, lovely, LONG, MM (so you can set the size on the side). Compact, easy to carry, likely could make two bags of MM from raw materials and energy and outside air. So perfect for camping in the 23rd century.
