Without knowing it, in the part labeled section 4, her notation (up, down, same etc.) is how Byzantine music was (is) notated. The best chanters of Greek and Antiochian Orthodox music still read that type of notation. They do utilize smaller intervals than the half step though, which can sound foreign to westerners.

@@shandamiller8040 Not so sure about the rest, but for the smaller interval than a half step you should check out middle eastern music! They use quarter tones instead of half tones

Devasabhathalam - His Highness Abdullah

Azhalinte Azhangalil (beginning humming) - Ayalum Njanum Thammil
