Yes and no. All source traits (what is inside) have a surface trait (what we show others). How I like to explain it is that there are parts of our personality that we might not show others (source trait), as such we might show (surface trait) a different personality because we are hiding this part of our personality. However, we really do not completely hid the our source traits, they do come to the surface but the question is how to they surface. This is where the interpretation of others come in. So, while I am fearful (source trait) it appears to others that I am amused (what is on the surface, giggling). Thus, unless you know me well, a person will misinterpret my personality because the source and surface do not match. Yet, your source and surface can match also. So lets say you love roller coasters, there is a good chance your source and surface will match and both are showing excitement and no misinterpretation. Cattell believed that a person's source traits were more important to know and understand than a person surface traits. There is a good chance that your parents will know all your source traits and why they tend to to be correct about your reactions even if we do not like to admit they are right.
