  • Exploring the abandoned Airth castle hotel & spa in Scotland.
    BRIEF HISTORY OF LOCATION:
According to an account attributed to Blind Harry, in 1298 William Wallace attacked a previous wooden fortification on this site to rescue his imprisoned uncle, a priest from Dunipace. A later castle was destroyed after the defeat of King James III at Sauchieburn in 1488. The southwest tower is the earliest part, dating to the period immediately thereafter. An extension was added on the east side in the mid 16th century.
Airth Castle was owned by Falcones. Mary Bruce, a daughter of the laird of Airth, was a companion of Mary, Queen of Scots in England. The family were Jacobite sympathizers who were forced to sell after the failure of the 1715 rising. The castle is a major historic building that retains much medieval fabric.
Judge Graham acquired the estate in 1717 and it remained in his family until 1920. It was converted into its present use (hotel) in 1971, having been acquired from the Forrester family.
Airth Castle was last owned by Airth Castle Limited and was operated by Airth Castle Hotel & Spa, a company formed in 2004. It was a popular wedding venue. The operator entered administration and ceased trading in March 2023.

I got married here in 2021, it was so beautiful, I fell in love with the room with the wooden beams and had so many happy memories here. So so sad to see the mess it is 😢 Always thought I'd take my daughter to where mum & dad got married. So sad 😢

I lived just round the corner, in Airth in the early 2000s. Swam in that hotel pool as a child many times! Such a shame to see it fall into disrepair so quickly. What a waste! The longer it is left the more expensive it'll be to rescue

Such a shame - it was only closed in 2023 and therefore it's vandalism that makes it look far worse than it should.

Am surprised the owner hasn't tracked down those responsible for the damage.
But then again... perhaps he has! 🫣

@@Northerndecay to be honest, I'm surprised that the local low life fraternity, haven't set the place on fire. It's obvious the ratbags have been in there though.
It really is a terrible shame.
Loved hearing your accent, by the way...reminds me of home 🙂
