in retrospect it sounds like a good idea but its never that simple. the cost to let them live there would be enormous. someone always has to pay. not to mention it would bring the value down of places around it. if they could freely sign a waiver and just go in and nobody had to worry about it thatd be great but thats not reality. i have a shit ton of abandoned homes in my area. about 8 per street. homeless people destroy them pretty fast.
@@ElectrikArguement Homeless people are destructive. This is severely evidenced. Obviously, not all homeless people, but enough. A lot of homeless people have disabilities and should be sheltered by professionals with proper supervision. I just want to say that I very much appreciate the respect that you guys give to these locations like not disclosing addresses and if there's a chance that security may get involved that the decision is made to leave. Too many "explorers" do things like break windows and glass, steal salvageable metal, or just generally vandalize properties and it's amazing to see people who just want to document and record a building's history and see these sort of 'time capsules' of the near past.
My mother used to be a security guard at this place and the common consensus of the now former staff is that the place got shut down due to a mix of money issues and shitty business practices. One person on management was found out to be stealing credit card numbers, there was a lot of in-staff fighting going on, another manager was constantly just not around, and then there was the whole issue of the place being renamed in preparation for being handed off to a new owner and then the deal never went through, which you touched upon in the video. The ballrooms and that main large room were often used for small conventions, meetings, and receptions. Part of the reason for the hotel's bad rep is due to location. The other hotel that is a stone throw away from this one was known as being a drug and pimp hotel. You would often have people from that hotel coming to this one and causing trouble. I stayed at this hotel several times myself and found the place nice and clean, but the poor reviews are def a reflection of the staff problems. FunFact; that massive room in the middle used to be an indoor pool area, but it was filled in/removed a long while ago. Also, the place is haunted. My mom and several staff had eerie experiences there.
Even if the hotel had to close for whatever reason it's so strange that the computers and lights were left on and food left out. Its like it was never properly shut down. Im surprised its not been looted
As a former food service worker thank you for going through the kitchen slow I love reminiscing I am very impressed with the cleanliness in the rooms in restroom the kitchen wasn't bad considering either I hope somebody takes it over and doesn't destroy it beautiful building I wished I had the money to buy it
I live near this hotel. It closed before Covid and it was not demolished. Definitely not demolished. In fact I just rode past it yesterday. Still standing and still closed.
the sad thing is that some teens or bad people could manage to get past security and sadly absolutley destroy all those offices, kitchens, hotel rooms and worst of all that server room which is a major fire hazard
I have a crap ton of respect for you and your crew for not stealing and or destroying the places you explore I just subscribed to your channel and cant wait to see all your vids thank you be safe guys
A place like that in very good condition than there is always someone watching. Nobody is going to leave millions of dollars of equipment go to waste without security.
Love your content Brennan! You're hard work shows through and through. The waste of these gorgeous abandoned properties amazes me. So much potential in massive places to do good for their communities.
What I can tell you about that hotel is... the brand name "Red Lion", belonged to Tod McClaskey, he also started a small airline. The family had no interest in the airline... Im guessing they had no interest in the hotels either
@@annic.9605 It actually IS! Our server room overheated just before we got in to work at my job one Monday morning. About an hour in, we were all smelling something burning...and suddenly the IT guys went barrelling past us into the room. Came out with 2 items that were melting & smoking. If it had happened on the weekend, the place would have gone up in flames before anyone was there!
What a waste ... so many places like this ... running water ... beds ... dishes ... electric ... and there are ppl homeless or even families living out of thier cars . How do these guys find these places and get inside , are they not locked up!?
Serenity You usually have to trespass to explore abandoned buildings, meaning getting creative with ways of entry. Maybe they got permission to get in though
What a "waste"?! It takes MONEY to heat/cool, provide electricity, pay for water, pay for sewer, clean, maintain and repair, etc. People can't just move in live because it's there. "Families living out of their cars" got there somehow, my guess is they didn't work. If you have a family you do whatever crappy job you can find, you don't have the luxury of just giving up.
As far as finding, urban explorers have several websites to communicate about sites like this. Some of the more well-known sites I've seen urban explorer channels visit have actually run into other urban explorers. As for getting in, it's often luck or finding a whole in the lock-up, such as a broken window, fence, hole in the boards, things like that. In many cases abandoned sites don't do a great job of maintaining the secured areas, or if you're lucky you'll catch them in between repairs. And I recall one video where one group almost got trapped when security patched up the holes they used to get in.
But in a hotel how much of a security system do you really need? So I’m sure there is not much, Someone is there 24/7, it’s not like there’s motion sensors everywhere since guests and employees are supposed to be there around the clock.
There must have been motion sensors that alerted that car to come. It's weird the building is abandoned. Maybe there's structural damage from a tornado or earthquake that's making it unsafe.
Most hotels don't have THAT much security by default do to the 24/7 nature of their business requiring they be accessible to guests at all times, so if they didn't do much to upgrade the property's security after the shut down...well...
This Hotel is 4 miles from me. I was in this hotel last year. Can't believe I just came across this video. It's still there. I pass this hotel off the highway almost everyday. WOW!
@@jopat923 The hotel is in the Baltimore area. Drove by last night, and there is a security guard who is stationed in the front lobby. Security said the hotel is going to become a Marriott in 2021. It's an "off brand" name hotel. I don't want to give out the exact location for safety reasons. Thanks
It’s sad to see a property like this but in all honesty, after being in the hotel industry for 13-years and going through ownership change after ownership change, a lot of the reason why hotels start to “age” is because the owners of the property don’t bother investing in the building itself and the management (Red Lion Hotels) can only do so much with the financial resources it had/has. Once hotels start failing their BSA (Brand Standard Audits) it doesn’t take long before they get deflagged. Often times, a management company will make small improvements just to pass their BSA but then go right back to their old ways. Then you have the issue of the annual market analysis. Is the hotel viable and competitive enough? What are other hotels of the same rates doing in the area. So while it is easy to blame the hotel staff it really comes down to ownership and if ownership doesn’t care then the employees don’t care and once that happens, there is no recovery.
Thanks for this information. It really adds to our understanding of why hotels go out of business. I wonder how much similarity there is to the management companies that run apartment complexes. I've lived in the same small apartment complex for 13 years and have been under five owners and/or managment companies and the place has visibily deteriorated. I"m guessing that minimum work is being done to keep the place up to code and for a while the laundry room was probably below safety codes. I live in a college town and read how one rental property owner is also a business teacher at the university and even said he does the minimum required by law for his properties.
I would have grabbed the case of monster, soda and any booze behind the bar counter. It'll all get thrown out anyway, might as well make use of it. Sadly because of this dudes video, the place is probably under surveillance even more now.
O they know it's being used and they are still charging, they don't care. When the bill gets really high, over months, then they will shut off, or if they realise operations start happening again , they will shut off, and you will have to clear the bill to get back power or owner will be taken to court.
Power is subsidized by the government in most countries. Hence the electric company doesn't care, they don't make more or less money in the end, the government pays the bill and the government doesn't care because it is taxpayer money. They just raise taxes if they need more. A big reason why most countries are in debt, it is pure fiscal irresponsibility at all levels of government.
That's an amazing location! It looks lovely, smart, clean and welcoming, and the disabled bathroom looked like it had great access too. I hope new owners can be found and can make a success of it 😊
When I watch these Abandoned Videos. I try to picture each area walked as like a flashback moment and I can picture all the people that have passed through that area and what that might have looked like.
For those suggesting that this place be used as a hospital or homeless shelter -- this hotel was falling apart in some areas, infected with black mold, and actually had some sort of insect infestation in the walls of some public areas BEFORE it was closed. So it is in no way suitable for an easy fix. (Long time attendee of conventions at this venue)
Unpaid property taxes and was foreclosed on. In a situation like that, the building is just closed. If it is owned by the city it would be a good place for homeless/corona shelter
And who pray tell would pick up the tab for any type of "shelter" thos building might be used for? Are you cool with a tax increase? OK to have a large cluster of former homeless folks in your town? Who will volunteer to work there? Taxes, utilities, maintenance..who pays for that? Also keep in mind that most homeless shelters are a revolving door. Plenty of folks get tossed out, banned from returning. BECAUSE THEY DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOR. No shelter will permit residents to get drunk and high whenever they please, hence the revolving door.
onemanghetto You DO realize there's a MASSIVE number of people about to be evicted due to job loss right now, right? And those people are just normal people who pay taxes, pay rent, have a car payment, clean their house, don't do drugs, etc. I, personally, am fine with a tax increase to help some of those people. Then again, I'm not a heartless know-it-all like some people clearly are.
@@HomesteadHopefulTara well let me say you are in a minority most people won't even vote for a school levy that would cost 7$ a month. Because the " government " will just " waste" all that $. And those people are not always wrong. Case in point: education has been defunded heavily over the years but any mention of defunding police or military is met with outrage. Yes we need programs for the homeless but let's get to the root of the problem. Addiction. Mental health. Education. The very things that are not likely to get funded. Thank the Reagan administration for that. Gov't funding for those programs were gutted way back in the 80s. In my comment I was typifying the average person's response to a homeless shelter in their neighborhood, which is why shelters are usually in some bombed out downtown ghetto location. "Not in my backyard " so it goes..
I have read this same thing about housing the homeless so many times in urban explorer comments. If it was that simple there would be no homeless. Some of these properties have liens on them, some have been deemed uninhabitable for various reasons, some are earmarked for future use, slated for eventual demolition, etc. In a perfect world some of these places could be repurposed for new housing. THIS ALSO TAKES $. The financial situation worldwide is about to get really crazy. Foreclosures, businesses folding, evictions, job losses. Some kinda solution will have to come up and soon. Governments world wide will have to jump in at some point. At least one would hope. Donations and private sector $ ain't gonna be there, and yes there is going to be a housing crisis like never seen before. Wish ourselves luck!
Great job guys. I've worked in a few hotels in my time, this is actually a pretty nice place. The respect you gave this property will also give you some really good karma! I'm glad you didn't get caught, that would absolutely suck. I agree, clean up the kitchen, take care of the leaks/damage to the ceiling/etc, this would be a nice place again. Keep up the great work!
Guessing that whiteboard was right. Perhaps bad management really forced the best people to quit and there was nobody to run the place (and the bad management just said F it). Nice job.
@ very bad management plus they wasn't paying taxes but to be real with you, I've work down the street from there and stayed there maybe 2 times, the management was very very bad
@@lukesolak4694 ya but they've been paying for it for over a year now with it being empty, if they just used this space for homeless people temporarily I bet it would've changed a lot of lives (just being able to shower, get a good nights sleep and eat a tin of food can help someone get their feet and get off the streets for good
Looks a lot better in the video than the last time I was there. The owners let it decay for years. There are mold, bug and water problems all over. Looks like they FINALLY did a few cosmetic fixes (the ballroom carpet looks like it was changes since 2017) that they had been promising for YEARS prior.
Bill Williams Oh God.. Another case of TDS in public. You should probably quarantine yourself, it’s much worse than covid.. thankfully only idiots and snowflakes can catch it tho.
The only thing I can think of is that there might be some sort of pending legal action and the owners were instructed to leave everything exactly as it was.
They have to get abondened because of paperwork. Believe or not my family had small boutique hotel and it left completly untouched because of legal reasons
This is very sketchy to know hotels leave servers and credit card info open to anyone who broke in. Technically you too are trespassing and while it’s fun to explore not everyone is as honest as you. I’m surprised there weren’t squatters in there since it still has utilities.
I would have came back with a uhaul and loaded the hell up with so much stuff. But I have to admit that it is strange that the place is just empty like that. It's a little creepy.
fantastic find! its always so eerie to see so much left behind intact. i wish you wouldve seen if those lockers were open or not, it wouldve been interesting to see if anyones personal stuff got left
One thing I've noticed in watching all these vids, our boy seems to have an endless fascination with kitchens and cafeterias. Brennan, did something happen to you as a child? Possibly involving a kitchen?
Shut up, there is no coincidence. Why do you watch these videos? What happened to you? Are you mentally scared and need closure by watching these vids? Come on dope!
This is amazing! I always find the “as if they left yesterday” videos the best / most creepy. 👍 I mean, with even the servers running it really feels like there was no plan to their last day.
Either the owners clean up their act and fix whatever's wrong there (and with themselves) and restart the business or sell it to someone else who can. True, there was a deal but it never went through, as you said, but there must be someone out there who will. I mean if I had a hotel company where I buy a property, fix it up, and open it, I would do that with that place. Really I think demolishing the place would be more expensive, and instead of turning untouched land into a hotel, recycle this place!
If your hotel/restaurant is going out of Business and you have tons of food left over donate it to the homeless, have the chefs cook what's left and enjoy it with your colleagues or have them take what's left home for them to enjoy with their families. Don't let food just waist away like that. They're people that are starving while good food is being left to rot.
This is crazy to see. I lived here for 3 months back in 2017, at that time it was still the Radisson. There were many other people/families living in the hotel but outside that occupancy was pretty low. It had been run down and sold several times, you can still see the ghost of the "Crowne Plaza" sign on the outside. There are a lot of nicer hotels nearby, as well as cheaper. Not many activities outside a 2 week stretch in the summer so not surprising it closed.
Boy, from Holiday Inn Select to Crowne Plaza to North Baltimore Plaza to Radisson to Red Lion. It's surprising it looks as good as it does, but then again it only just closed August of 2019.
The weird thing about this is that I looked into it, and the restaurant actually closed January 2019 despite the hotel not closing till August of the same year. Makes you wonder what kind of hotel would knowingly still operate knowing there was rotten food/meat near by. The pool also stopped being used by May. Hotel workers kept telling guests that the restaurant and pool were just merely under construction but construction never took place. Eventually close to the end they told guests the facilities were closed indefinitely
I know this hotel well! Helped run a sci-fi convention here for years! It changes ownership several years ago and the new owners basically let it decay to a disgusting level. Very sad actually, since when kept up it was a really nice space.
@@esvalve True, but good people don't do bad things because they can't get away with it, but because they don't want to do bad things. This is why most people in the world aren't truly good, and why anarchy is so dangerous. Give people the chance, and they will be any monster they are allowed to become.
Ethical urban explorers don't do that. While the location itself is abandoned, someone somewhere owns the property and it's contents so it would still be stealing. Plus it ruins things for future urban explorers.
I go past this hotel on my way to work everyday. It's changed names 2 or 3 times in the past 2 years. It's huge with really nothing to bring visitors around it. It has to be difficult maintaining a larger hotel with nothing to entice large crowds in to sell out the rooms. My friend, who stayed there from time to time for work, was told they were closing for an extensive remodel back in September 19' but obviously there hasn't been an attempt at that. Also was told the rooms were a, "Hit or a miss" as far as mold, cleanliness, and bugs go.
My boos is looking to acquire a new porperty outside of michigan. could yoy please pm me the name so i can pass that on to him and his board of directors?
If I have the right hotel which I'm not going to disclose the name but from what I seen on a Google map doing street view I saw a dumpster sitting there so it look like someone else had mentioned that they were in the process of renovating a remodeling would be my guess so that's probably why the power is still on but also they might leave the power on to prevent damage to the place
Funny you would say that because people been sating it was haunted since it was 1st built, it use to be a drive in movie theater before they built the hotel there
..... You think once something becomes abandoned it stops being owned by someone? This is just as much trespassing as any of the other videos, and we thank him for doing it!
Hotels had to shut down here in md due to covid-19 and they have to renovate while waiting to get the ok to reopen. There is a big chance these guys ask to film but if not they are trespassing.
My Phone not in all cases think about it as a pause it could potentially become abandoned but the difference is that this is untouched abandoned buildings are usually in very bad condition
shaun king Not really, abandoned generally means the owners or anyone with the company doesn’t go there anymore and just left it to rot, not in operation just means that they aren’t using it for business but still are making repairs, maintaining it to an extent and has real future plans.
My Phone Nothings abandoned, it’s just a buzzword that ‘urban explorers’ use to justify what they do. Everything is owned by someone, no one is gonna buy a multi million dollar hotel and then just be like ‘fuck it no one wants it anymore let’s just leave and abandon it’. Someone owns the building, someone owns the land. No matter how run down or derelict it seems.

My question is, how was it so accessible? With electricity and all, wouldn't there be a functioning security system?
But in a hotel how much of a security system do you really need? So I’m sure there is not much, Someone is there 24/7, it’s not like there’s motion sensors everywhere since guests and employees are supposed to be there around the clock.
There must have been motion sensors that alerted that car to come. It's weird the building is abandoned. Maybe there's structural damage from a tornado or earthquake that's making it unsafe.
it could be security company contract unlocking the place on a morning for the administrators to come in etc.
Most hotels don't have THAT much security by default do to the 24/7 nature of their business requiring they be accessible to guests at all times, so if they didn't do much to upgrade the property's security after the shut down...well...
...odds are that security car was just one vehicle passing through to make sure the place wasn't on fire or any of the windows were smashed...
If I found a place like that I'd move in, put up an "Under new management" sign, and ride that pony!

I'm always amazed that no one at the power company notices that lots of power is used but the electric bill is not payed.
Stupid and a waste of energy.
It’s probably still being paid. The environmental controls need power. Commonplace really.
Probably on an auto-pay account that gets more and more overdrawn each month
This is very interesting to see exactly how untouched things are after being left behind

The Government owns more unused building, than there are homeless, but has no access the common sense.

Why would an abandoned place like this still have power and water?

The weird thing about this is that I looked into it, and the restaurant actually closed January 2019 despite the hotel not closing till August of the same year. Eventually close to the end they told guests the facilities were closed indefinitely
