Worth $250k?! 2023 Land Rover Defender V8 review (DEFENDER 110 P525)

- If you have a big budget and want a big SUV with big presence, the Land Rover Defender 110 P525 V8 could be the right car for you.
It has a huge price tag, too - about $230,000 before on-road costs - so you're going to have to REALLY want the V8 to justify that expense. Honestly, with a 5.0L supercharged V8 petrol engine like this one has, I can see the appeal.
But then again, I can also see the appeal in the less expensive petrol and diesel models, some of which cost 65 per cent less than this car!
In this review I tell you what make this car great, what could make it better, and help you figure out if a Defender 110 is the right fit for your family or not.
I also name a couple of amazing alternatives that you should also be considering, if you aren't sure whether the 110 is right for you.

Love this car in that green colour. Even got the lego set 😅 the amount I have seen with single daytime running lights out are alarming when your paying for a defender
Totally agree - the green is awesome. But yes, you're right - the issues with DRLs (among other, apparently significantly more serious concerns) is a bit of a doozy.
Interesting that every review of a JLR product attracts reliability comparisons with Toyotas and not German competitors which also have reliability issues.
Awesome video, I’m curious about the noise levels in the car.. is it comfortable / luxury quiet or does it get a lot of wind and engine noise pollution?
Great review Matt! Interestingly, 3 of my friends own Land Rover(2 vellars and 1 evoque), they all in love with their cars with zero issue! This makes me want to get a defender too. So do u reckon the reliability issues everyone is mentioning are more Range Rover and defender related? Thank you!❤
Thanks Yan! Appreciate your comment. Honestly I don’t know what the real-world reliability is going to be like. But having said that, I had two friends but identical Discovery Sports a few years back - one had zero issues and sold it after 80,000km, the other took his back after 5000km because of dozens of problems.
I don’t think you can narrow it down - I think the company has bigger issues that spread across multiple model ranges - but it’s still a luck of the draw thing!!
The reliability of JLR product has improved heaps in recent years.
A lot of talk about reliability issues, is a carry over from a long, long time ago, and is often comments by people with no actual hands on experience with the brand.
A lot of comments about reliability issues are hugely inaccurate, and based on incorrect information.
@@therightcarIf these Disco Sport had the Ingenium Diesel motor, ( which was available in Australia from late 2016 ) the DPF can be problematic if u only do short metropolitan driving
( which is not ideal for any diesel motor )
And Timing Chains are sadly problematic with this particular motor, due to various issues…
Hugely important to change engine oil and filter every 10,000 kms with this motor.
The original service interval of 2 yrs / 34,000 kms was wildly optimistic, and led to problems, that should not have occurred, and would not have occurred if LR opted for much more sensible service intervals, such as every 12 months / max 15,000 kms
when you wobble the back door a little, the hydraulic arm will semi locked to stop the door, it works even in decent incline
Good tip to avoid a smack in the back!!
Great looking vehicle
It sure is!
This car is beast
These prices are ridiculous. Absolutely insane!
It’s the reality for a luxurious Land Rover!
This one would suit the Toorak school run. Not Full off roading . Go the diesel on other variants
I hear you. A 110 Defender with the D300 engine would be grand!
Nice looking vehicle, but probably not really overly suited to heavy off reading due to it being equipped with a Petrol Particulate Filter. The PPF is susceptible to damage If it gets too wet. Apparently it's supposedly Over $8k + for a singl e unit & a heck of a lot more for it on a dual exhaust.
Unfortunately, petrol particulate Joey filters are going to become more and more common across multiple model ranges, and I’ve heard similar stories on much more affordable cars in terms of repair costs.
@@therightcarso far over 50 different vehicles from various brands here are PPF equipped. It shouldn't be an issue if you don't use 91 ULP which will destroy the filter . In a vehicle like the Landy or any other 4WD/AWD that anyone is intending to take off road, Deep water crossings need to be avoided as this can or likely will destroy a PPF sending the vehicle into Limp mode. I heard of this being done in both the US & UK where testers took the vehicles thru their recommended wading depth only for the vehicles to end up dying not long after. Both went into Limp mode with no one aware of the cause. Both were towed & it apparently took several days to diagnose that water was the culprit. DPF's just don't appear to suffer the same fate and appear far less susceptible to damage. Replacement DPF's are a fraction of the cost of a PPF .
@@Coastmac2001 Landrover have designed the Defender V8 to handle wading of 90cm like all Defenders, the PPF wont get damaged if you wade through water in this car.
@@ckaparos , The damage occurred in some of the first models being tested in the UK & the US prior to going on sale globally . It appears that the 2 particular journos involved took the vehicles in deeper than what they should have . The vehicles suffered serious damage as a result. So possibly from that LR/RR may have done a redesign of any affected components to ensure that they are fully protected from a full dunking
@@Coastmac2001 Well when I spoke to the CEO of JLRA and head of engineering they told me it can wade now with no potential to damage the PPF so i think they have found a resolution to the issue.
Awesome rig, thou I'd prefer it in the 90 version...
Yeah the 90 is cool, but not nearly as practical!
Hey Matt, if money wasn’t an issue would you rather this or G63?
The G 63 is an amazing piece of engineering, and certainly going to be more of a future collectible than a Defender.
If I was driving it every day, and I wasn’t worried about potential ownership hiccups, then I would say the Defender would be my choice. But seriously, all the rumours and the reports of evidence of significant ownership issues with current Land Rover product is enough to make me think that maybe it would be a better choice to live with a G!
G63 any day.
Big mistake at 2:50.
New RR/RRS comes with BMW’s 4.4 turbo V8. JLR’s 5.0 is ending it’s production.
Thanks for calling me out on that mistake. I've edited it and the new version of this video is being processed in RUclips back-end.
Given the reported reliability issues and the court rulings against JRA after customers needed to resort to court to enforce their rights, surely you cannot seriously recommend that vehicle?
Some people will still find that it's the right car for their needs. Would I spend $250K of my own money on one? No. I don't have that kind of disposable income. But there are LOTS of people who buy what they like because they can afford it, and if they want something that has known issues like this, that's their prerogative.
@The Right Car?
You are right, and that proves there's an idiot born every day 😊
$ 36 k of LCT in the RRP !
Save yourself $ 100 k and buy it with the P400 or D300 motor…
I hear you. I loved the D300 110 S model I drove. Felt like a much less risky spend at $96k.
@@therightcar
Totally agree Matt. 👍
LCT is a joke. Why punish people for spending money on a car 😠 Sadly the ridiculous amount of tax is the main thing that will keep me from buying new. I have money, but not enough to throw away $30,000 to the tax man for a car...
Fantastic Indian car.
I see ton of this cruising near my place in india
Where do you live?
Will it last more than 3 years?
You saw what I said about reliability, right? I'm sure it'll last three years...!
Ohhh no other 4wd … @carexpert has entered the chat with his Raptor 😂
Hahaha
Thanks for the enthusiasm Matt - it’s great on style but will likely be poor on reliability and build quality especially as LR is now an Indian company which is not my opinion but fact - I’d rather put my ‘safe’ money on a Toyota Landcruiser and the rest on the mortgage but can understand the smile on your face.
Fair call mate - I hear you!
Hey Matt, the defender ain't a luxury vehicle!,it's an Off-road "symbol" & people usually buy it for that macho look than anything.there are range rovers for those who prefer luxury.
❤❤❤
Right back at you!
The defender is a bomb. It's so unique and cool. But it's a land rover that might blow up your pocket >_
Thanks for the comment!
I think I will stick with my current V8 Land Rover, it's probably more reliable.
What year is yours??
@@therightcar 1983
Did you mean to say that this car was over 200k? Because that’s not the MSRP. It’s around 118K.
Where you from, bro? In Australia this spec is $250k.
It better be bullet proof for that price. I would buy a rezvani over that sht.
Change the farty exhaust change the 3 cent seats to leather what was land rover thinking and this could be the best suv ever with that supercharged v8 if it is reliable
Land rover is now owned by Tata an Indian company so.
Yep, has been for years!
Hi, I'd rather go land rover defender V8 SE model supercharged 5litre eight speed automatic transmission making 493 hp and 450 pound feet of torque than this trim this is not for me and not some people however price is so high than made this car
Bought my first house for 250 k mind boggling
But world moved since then lol 😂
Pass !!!
Fair enough!
I have also same model but till I have no issues with this car in india there is the symbol of the gang leader
Owning a Range Rover is kind of like having a good-looking girlfriend that's actually a drug addict. Expensive to have around and always need a fix
Wow.
2 huge problems. 1 it's a Land Rover almost as trouble-free as a Jeep. 2 That is a ridiculous price for that, many better vehicles for half that price. EG: BMW X5.
Well, you aren’t getting a V8 powered BMWX5 for half this much money mate.
@The Right Car?
Who wants a V8 gas gussler? I don't. At least an X5 has got some snob value a crappy Land Rover doesn't.
@@buncha5651
Some people wants v8 that's why LR is making them. If its not for you then its fine.
It does not cost 2 handred thousand dol.
It costs MORE THAN $200k.
That thing has the biggest b-pillars I have ever seen!
STRONG!
No car is worth more that much money sorry. For all those Uber rich folks good luck enjoy.
However for the rest of us please review more every day cars we can actually afford. Not all that interested in these Uber rich rides.
This is grossly overpriced should be no more than $150k
There is $ 36 k of LCT in the RRP…
This is a very niche vehicle.
If someone really wants a Defender V8, they will pay this for it.
LR Australia have definitely got big margin in this car.
You can still get a helluva lot of Defender for $150k - though I'd be pleased with a base S grade 110 with D300 engine. :D
Where the hell u got that bullshit price?
Why would I bullshit you about the price? That’s what it costs here in Australia champ.
Don't buy one there a piece of crap. I have one with a vibration and is terrible to drive. LAND ROVER say it operates within design limits. My ride on mower is smoother.
Shame on you JLR.
That's no good mate. Sorry to hear it.
This car is beast
