  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Land Rover fender V8!
There are plenty of Land Rover Defenders to choose from the two door, Defender 90, four door Defender 110 and the larger Defender 130. We have the Defender 110 with the V8 powertrain. It has a supercharged 5L V8 with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD.
This Land Rover Defender SUV comes with electronic air suspension, electronic active differential, Terrain Response 2, all-terrain progress control which is a low speed cruise control feature requiring no pedal inputs from the driver and advanced tow assist.
The lightweight Land Rover Defender chassis has been engineered and tested to the extreme around the world with more than 73,000 trails across 2.4 million miles. The carrying load allows for 370 pounds for all your gear and the static load up to 661 pounds.
The Land Rover Defender offers a modern, rugged and boxy design with a raised hood and a sculpted grille. It offers 8.5 to 11.5” of ground clearance with a wading depth of 35.4”. Our test model is riding on 22” wheels and comes standard with dark exterior accents, body-coloured door handles, quad exhaust pipes, LED headlights, fog lights and V8 badging.
The interior of the Land Rover Defender is coated with a highly durable powder coat to ensure the interior is just a durable as the exterior. The Defender has a bit of a rugged interior mixed with luxury materials like Windsor leather. There’s plenty of storage throughout the vehicle including a cooler in the centre console storage box. The Defender comes standard with an 11.4” touchscreen and offers a clean and intuitive interior design with volume and climate knobs.
Fuel economy is rated at 16.4L/100 km, 14 MPG city and 12.7L/100 km, 18 MPG highway.
The Land Rover Defender V8 starts at $133,200 CAD/$111,500 USD.

You really are in a party of like, 5. The stories are awful, I had a brand new lr4 for a year, one year less than 23 k miles and it had coolant issues from about 3k miles and after a year and just at 23k miles it needed a new head for the block?????😮😮😮😮 yeah. You got out good I’m really happy for you but it just isn’t the normal experience.

I own a 23 Defender 90 V8 and absolutely love it. I had the oil light issue intermittently , but it turned out to not be an issue. In fact it really does not need oil and if you put any in you risk overfilling it. Mine stopped giving me the notice once I got around 700 miles. I took it to Land Rover and there was nothing wrong with it and the oil level was all good. The issue just fixed itself, maybe a breaking in quirk, funny to see it happen on another V8.
I previously owned a 21 G63 and I have to say I enjoy the Defender a bit more. This is my 3rd Land Rover and nothing quite drives like one. I think the 5.0 V8 might even sound a bit better than the G63, it has more character overall. The Defender is a ton of fun and a definitely in the top of all the vehicles I have owned.

So many negative comments on here. I wonder how many of the experts on here have owned one of these? I have a defender and my wife a Disco. I’ve owned 5 land rovers, and, with the exception of the Freelander (lr2), all are quite amazing. The defender is the best of the lot. Built like a tank, fast, great on and off road. Just wish people would just quit with the arm chair expertise.

A couple of people I work with have Range Rover Sport models and both have had a few smaller issues (haven't heard about coolant or oil issues). A new vehicle needing coolant or oil so much would worry me about head gasket issues (assuming there are no puddles under it showing an exterior leak). I get that it's a status symbol and is really nice inside, but for me, I couldn't handle spending that kind of money and have such problems, especially when you can buy a $30,000 Toyota Corolla and put 500,000 kms on it with minimal problems. If I wanted a high(er) end vehicle like this, I'd get the new Lexus GX.

I like that you review everyday vehicles as well as the more premium and exotic ones for good measure - the Defender V8 being no exception! In terms of enthusiast cars, (CTR, ITR, M2, CT4-BW, ZL1 etc ), what would you say would be the one most likely to hold it's value, given that a lot of these vehicles are selling significantly over MRSP? Thanks!

I bought an XJR and loved it. Got the extended warranty and sold it before it expired. Now I have a ‘23 AMG GLE 53. It is giving me 19.9mpg which I like compared to my 2017 GLS550 which had the height and standing if not the panache of …say an Autobiography, but such as it is, I liked the lower profile.
Despite whatever, I would still consider a Defender, but no complaints at all about my GLE53.

Hey, I'm a follower with a '22 Defender V6. Not much wrong after owning it since mid '21. I just find that it drains the battery pretty quickly if you don't drive it for 2-3 days and if you don't lock it (the dealer says it will use up battery always searching for a remote signal). The Remote sensor is not very sensitive and sometimes doesn't sense my key fob even when I'm standing right next to the door. I HATE the seat for long distance driving because it has NO BOLSTERING whatsoever, so my thighs slide to the sides and get fatigued. I consider myself pretty lucky that those are the only issues. But if you want reliability, you have to put up with vehicles that look like they were designed by Rubbermaid or Dollarama, so I choose to enjoy my life.

The dash was the only metal piece on the vehicle that didn't rust out. I'd still rather have that thing today than an overpriced piece like the Defender.

At 6:45 - the volume knob is conveniently closer to the passenger while the driver uses the easy to use steering wheel controls. The shifter is a convenient perch for the hand when using the touch screen. BTW - the RHD version flips the center console controls to allow the same. The Defender is legit. Rugged inside and out. You can be filthy from hikes, hop in, dogs too, deep clean the interior with lots of water and not worry about harming anything. Regular over the air software updates have been seamless. Not sure if I believe the JLR service tech skit claiming 36 month warranty @ 13:20. The reality is the warranty is 48 months, 50K miles bumper to bumper. 6 year corrosion. Ours is 23K miles old. No issues other than want to enjoy more off road time :)

I am waiting for the fabled or mythological Toyota 4Runner with the hybrid drive train from the new Tacoma. But as that will be new, what time frame (e.g., 1 yr, 2 yr, or more) reliably indicates quality and reliability? Asking because the new Defender has been on market for 3yrs. So 3yrs Defender vs. new 4Runner?

How about the new GX 550? I'm waiting for the new 4runner as well, but will consider the GX 550. Love this Defender, but service and repair cost will be rather high. Toyota will be cheaper to own.

LR needs to put a proper off-road wheel and tire package on this thing instead of silly 20-22" rims with low-profile tires. Give me some proper 35-37" tires befitting the Defender nameplate.

All the comments on service - mainly from people who’ve never owned a Land Rover. It comes with a four year warranty which can be extended to ten years!! We have owned two with zero issues unlike my previous merc eclass and bmw 5 series - just saying…

Owning a Land Rover is like having a crazy hot wife or girlfriend. You can't wait to drive it until it does something crazy and leaves you disappointed, poor and stranded on the side of the road. 😂

Ya.... I really wanted a Defender but I'm gonna play it safe and get a GLS with the V8; I don't like being told by my vehicles to add this or to add that unless it's windshield wiper fluid.

Sorry to disappoint but the right hand drive version of the car has the gear shift on the right and the volume on the left of the centre console so the same issue exists on these cars in that the gear shift gets in the way of operating the touch screen.

I think at this point Land Rover just needs to go all EV ASAP. That is the only thing that may improve their reliability.
