@@mackenzierose1292 her coaches pushed her way too hard, finally making her not even want to do it anymore. More often than not an athlete who "psyches themself out" has been pushed too hard by others.
She should’ve gone. The U.S was stacked on bars. She could’ve just done vault and floor, which was where they were weakest. She even could’ve done beam, where she consistently got wonderful scores.
I loved Ling Jie's beam. I rarely see beam routines like that anymore. Imagine if she could've connected that BHS + Onodi to her front aerial. What a gorgeous series either way!
These fluff pieces on Vanessa really got out of hand. I would have stopped NBC from talking to her about anything bars related at all. So dramatic. How many times do gymnasts like Aly and Simone have errors on bars and it's just not a big deal. The 90s fluffs were crazy. A couple falls and they were already acting like Vanessa had some huge problem. I'm surprised her coaches even allowed NBC to talk to her after seeing these constant and unnecessary fluffs.
I hate it when if an athlete has a bad performance the coach walks away from them, instead of doing their job of coaching, corrections, or helping them see past it. That's their job. If they walk away from an athlete, I always feel like they care more about their reputation than the athlete. No wonder their athlete is faltering.
It's possible she didn't have a 10.0 start value. In 1998, a 9.7-9.8 would be an excellent score (it wasn't really possible to get a 10.0 any more in '98) so a 9.3 was OK, but not great. Since her execution was pretty good, it's likely she just didn't have enough hard elements to start from a 10.
The US hosted this meet from 1997-2001 as a friendly competition. Before 2000, it was the norm for the FIG to not host a Worlds every year (with the exception of the 1993-96 quad). 1998 was an off year for Worlds this quad
in addition to what kras118 said, the major international competition in the mid quad year for several decades was the Goodwill Games. The 98 Goodwills didn't have a team competition, instead featuring Mixed Pairs competition with a MAG and WAG athlete competing together, but they had all-around and event finals for all of the countries that were considered major contenders in the sport at the time - ex-USSR bloc, Romania, US, China along with some others. After the end of the Cold War their impetus faded out - 98 was the last time they were held in a mid-quad year, and the final edition of the GWG was held in 2001.
It was a terrible decision not to hold Worlds in ‘98 in this quad. With the minimum age also changing from 15 to 16, many gymnasts, including Vanessa Atler, Jamie Dantzscher, Ling Jie and Maria Olaru didn’t have the chance to compete at a World Championship until 1999.
For some reason this talented girl has it in her head that she cant do the bars, something happened and it's a shame I blame her coaching all the way back to the beginning, , Vanessa would have had to over come it herself which she just could never do.
He's actually right. The opening ceremony for the Sydney Olympics wasn't until September 15, 2000. This is due to the fact Sydney is in the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons are a bit different than they are in the US. At that time, when it was fall here, it was spring Down Under.
+Patricia Cullen Did I miss something, Patricia? if this 1998 International team competition was held in March of 1998, then March of 2000 would be two years (24 months) away, right? From March 2000 to September 2000 is another 6 months. So wouldn't that be 30 months, not 17??
How the F*#k does Vanessa's beam routine get a 9.55? Touches the beam and a few big breaks. It's such a shame that the USA got totally over scored but what can you expect . No wonder why other counties stopped sending gymnast to the American cup aka US Championships
they got awfully picky with Olaru's floor start value. Romanians usually over twisted the leap to get credit. Olaru did a leap that was maybe a tad short, but look at the americans leaps sometimes. Way worse.
Atler’s coaches should have just changed the transition between low to high bar. I remember she fell more on this than anything else. I’m so sick of these commentators. Everything was a disaster according to them. Always overly critical. “Unbelievable” “no, no” like stfu Tim.
I agree. If she kept falling on it, maybe she could have stood on the low bar to get to the high one like a few people did. It really annoyed me when the commentators kept judging her. "It's just getting to the high bar. It should be easy" like bars and beam are probably the events where gymnasts tend to second guess themselves on a lot.
The Romanians look fairly emaciated - especially Claudia Presecan. They must be starved by their coaches. I don't know what flaw in logic leads them to think starvation will produce better quality gymnastics. Also, the constant references to the Chinese gymnasts' smiles makes me think the team was specifically instructed by some higher authority to appear happy. That coach berating one gymnast because she was told to smile during her routine and didn't... It feels forced.
There are occasional stories about them being underfed, but Alexandra Marinescu and Maria Olaru have also said there was a lot of bulimia among the gymnasts in Deva - both vomiting and diuretics. Speaking of Presecan specifically, she had problems with anemia at the Olympics. I don’t know if that was a long-term issue for her or not.
Poor Vanessa. She was clearly physically and mentally exhausted. Her coach should've refused to coach her for 6 months and tell her to take time off. She would've been so angry and hungry after that time she probably would've done better. Think if she had the Romanian coach. She would be so annoyed at him that she would perform in spite of him. Wrong coaching choice for her. She needed a bit more ignoring and not so much attention on her. like Belu style. like, prove it to me.
Actually, Vanessa has since said that Steve giving her the cold shoulder after Nationals was WORSE than being yelled at (publicly). It was akin to emotional abandonment. However, I do agree that she needed another coach. As much as I loathe MLT, I can't help but wonder how things would've turned out under her tutorlage. Vanessa needed a warm, supportive friend on her side... NOT a bully monster like Steve Rybacki. Don't even get me started on Beth... 😡
Steve was an emotional bully. He rode his way to the Sydney Olympics solely on Jamie's back. How ironic it was that - up until 1999 - Jamie had always been 2nd pick. Always the bridesmaid & never the bride. Never the focus of attention - that dubious honour went to Vanessa (& we all saw how THAT turned out). Steve & Beth Rybacki no longer talk to Jamie, & have not long resumed contact with Vanessa as an adult. IMHO they failed them both.
Been a while but still can’t believe again the 🇺🇸 got over scored. That was Romanians gold but what do you spect. No long is just strong but dry as the dessert. Atler should had gotten lower scores but the judges felt bad for her.
I felt like the judges were a little more than generous with the bar scores the Romanians received during the team final at the 2000 Olympics. Most of them, save for Isarescu (sp?) had pretty horrid form on the bars. It also makes you think, that even with Russia’s many mistakes during the team finals, they still were within a few tenths of winning the team gold.
I love how amazed they are that Vanessa has an "internet website"
LaurenAnyone the internet was new in 98'
I miss life before the internet
The search for the cure. Treating Vanessa's bars like it is cancer! What a crime she was not on 2000 team!!
BuckHollywood she psyched herself out of the olympics

She wasn’t worth it. She failed

All these years later, and I still remember that Kristy met her boyfriend at TGI Fridays lol
I LOVED Corina's floor! Nice music! Dance! and Tumbling! Great floor routine overall!
She did great! It’s actually the same music that Aurelia Dobre used in ‘87 to win her world AA title, but different choreo; a great performance!
I miss these competitions. I wish they’d bring them back.
I’m also relieved that Al learned how to pronounce Pen Argyl correctly before the Sydney Games.
Same I loved them we need them back
Sang lan 😭 it’s so sad seeing her here after what happened a few months after this
Oh Al, Sydney wasn't so mystical, if only you knew that then.
Elfie is relentless and abrasive. Let’s see her get up on beam and hit a perfect routine.
Elfi was a gymnast- considered one of the best canadian gymnasts of all time.
I watched most of this meet with the volume off. What a pack of harpies.
You can pick a part routines without sounding outraged.
@@JennaLeigh... & yet never won an Olympic medal.
The end.
I forgot what a hot mess this meet was. Everyone looked bone tired.
It’s so sad that Sang Lan got paralyzed this year.😔 (1998)

The Romanians just look exhausted
Rybecki is so ignorant for destroying Vannessa's dreams!
Holy cow they are so mean to Vanessa Alter. At least her coach was encouraging!
This is some of the most insane judging... ever?
Sang Lan is beautiful =)
+kras118 I know. It's such a shame what happened to her four months later
I was born this year. This is crazy!
Does anyone else think Maria’s bars look better here then they did in Sydney
Prayers for the guy in the hospital good luck to all the teams I wish Nadia was there
Why did Andreea Isarescu only get 9.3 on floor? She performed beautifully.

her routine only started from a 9.7 based on my calculations.
God Tim is so irritating to hear commentate lol
Also - these commentators are such jerks to the Chinese...
LaurenAnyone the chinese are so professional and I think better than usa
very different Romanian team than what they have become now
Why did this year have an "International Team Gymnastics Championships "" but no World All Around or whatever? That's weird??

The scoring at this competition is really weird lol some over scored and some under scored
these gymnasts are very good

Yes! Sounds exactly like it anyways.
Did Olaru ever compete the full on beam again?

the commentators mostly did their " schooling" when the Romanians are competing especially during vault for the Romanians.
there a vietnamese girl gymnastic go to 1998 Olypmic here. and she is my classmate
