The commentary is so good; I love that they actually talk about the elements and how each athlete has been working to adapt to the code at the time instead focusing on drama.
@@stacitowery3475 She had vault up last. Lilia had floor in the last rotation where she goes about 9.9 normally and Dawes only scores in the mid 9.7s on vault even when she does it normally. Unless Dawes scored close to 9.9 on floor that round herself to build up a HUGE lead going into the last rotation she was only going to get AA silver behind Lilia.
Kathy and Bart- you guys are the best commentators in gymnastics. Shannon in 1993 was Simone-like this year, but it was the year after the Olympics. However, Shannon really was unbelievable from 5/1992- 5/1994. Then she was injured until the 1996 Olympics.
This brings me back so many good memories. Shannon was my alltime favorite gymnast and I remember watching this competition as a child, hoping that she would win. I can't believe this was 27 years ago, where does the time go...
Such a great meet. Holding on to your every breath. Such a tiny margin between all of them. Dominique did so beautifully and its just so sad she didnt place at all. Its crazy how things turn out. Im watching this 26 years later and im still holding my breath even though i know the outcome. Its nuts!!!
Wow, I forgot how amazing Li Li was. That beam routine was stunning! I now remember her bars routine at the Olympics...if only she would have upgraded that double back dismount, I think she would have medaled.
@@SDoesNotKnow The whole competition was a fugly mess. All the top gymnasts made mistakes somewhere and most of them (apart from Miller and maybe Dawes) did not even have 10 start values on most events yet.
I'm glad more ppl are looking at this wondeful era of Miller's career. I don't know why but Miller looks so tall here, she really isn't that tall but she looks like a giant and ready to take conmand. And indeed she did. And Dawes was awesome too! She too could've medalled, if it werent for that flop.
My favorite quad of gymnastics ever!! Loved the originality of the routines during this quad. They still had compulsories so impeccable technique and elegance were still part of the package.
Dominique Dawes was a classy ,nice gal. Such a good heart I can see that. It broke my heart 💔 to see her face, she was so close! But she was a class act 💯
Dominique did a flip flop flip flop to full in off the beam!! Same as Simone Biles now!! Although Simone does bhs stepout to flip flop full in!! Guys this was 25 years ago
Dawes was actually capable of that dismount back in Barcelona but opted to do "just" the double back to be on the safe side for the team final. Dawes was so underrated back then.
Did anyone notice that Shannon Miller did a full in off beam (which is her normal) however, it looks like she did it in piked position instead of tucked!
Shannon had excellent air awareness. If she felt it would be high she would pike and tuck if it seemed low. Over rotating that dismount is pretty extraordinary.
Dominique lost the title after her second vault, but the coach was nice anyways. The commentator was great showing some empathy even when announcing her score. I love the moment when Dawes waved at the crowd, and they responded really well to her. That was nice to see! ♥️♥️♥️
i do miss these older beam routines - you don't get handstands and other holds these days, which is a shame, as no other apparatus you can do them, so they've just disappeared really
1993: announcer- *gasps when Shannon slightly bobbles like she broke her ankle* 2020: announcer- *continues talking as if nothing happens when someone falls off the beam*
The gymnasts of today most certainly do have elegance and skills. The sport has evolved and revolutionized over the course of time. What an ignorant, selfish, self centered thing to say. Try being respectful to today’s gymnasts instead of being hypocritical.
whenever i have a bad day in my sport, i always always play 44:07-44:45. kelli hill loved being a coach and obviously didnt care about medals. as a student of any sport, they should always look for people like her. no wonder dominique stayed with her throughout her career
@@richardross4677she utilized the code of points to its fullest extent and made sure she had routines she could complete with little to no errors. That’s a pretty intelligent way of constructing your program, and exactly why she won all her medals. If you don’t like it that’s fine but try at least having a small modicum of respect- if you’re even capable.
Actually if the judged had credited her with her overshoot to handstand on uneven bars which they didnt and dropped her start value from 10 to 9.9 she also would have won. Or if you took away one of her numerous wobbles or steps on beam.
I love Shannon, but I think she was overscored on beam. Dominique was so close to win that title. I think she was going for the stick since she was over rotated on her first vault. Same thing happened to McKayla Maroney at the Olympics (vault final). Li Li was very original on beam. Gogean doesn't express her emotions, but she was great and trying to focus all the time, especially on the floor. Lisenko took huge risks. This was a nice competition! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Simone is extraordinary, no doubt. But I am glad I can go back to the days, before Simone was even born, when Shannon Miller and Dominique Dawes were the best of the best.
Think, if Shannon did an Arabian, 1 1/2, or Double, she would've been the last 10 EVER and the first 10 after Barcelona. The Full was devalued to a 9.8 so she technically did a perfect vault.
Nobody who did a double got a 10. Lysenko does the double twisting yurchenko better than the few I ever saw Shannon attempt, and did 2 very good ones here, and only got a 9.824 average. Miller probably would have scored lower trying the double twisting yurchenko even if she hit it than she did with the full twisting yurchenko. She didnt have the power to do that vault well without breaking form. The 1.5 maybe, since she did it pretty well in 95 and 96, although she sure as heck wouldnt get a 10 doing that vault either.
I noticed that the other gymnasts from the other countries looked on as couch Kelly Hill supports and shows tenderness to Dominique Dawes. I can’t help but wonder if they just think how weird and nice it would be to have that support.
Yeah really overscored. Bars 9.825 would be fine if she stuck the landing but she didnt. Beam she had big mistakes and was given a big gift. Floor was boring and I heard she was out of a 9.9, so considering that 9.825 was too high. Vault was fair, she did basically perfect there.
I always get so disgusted when the 1984 Olympics are mentioned. All they can ever focus on was the fact that it was boycotted. Not a care in the world for the amazing athletes that DID compete, just a focus on who wasn’t there. Such rubbish and a complete lack of respect for the competitors that were there in Los Angeles.
They covered these athletes as children with no agency at the mercy of coaches and delusional parents. Today this style of coverage would be considered outrageous.
The ´93 Olympics sickened me!! Dominic was a gymnast that performed multiple techniques that no other could barely pull off at that time if not at all. She went through every routine dead on except vault, how could this be her ending? Shannon performed poorly on the beam but did very well at all other routines now she didn't fall but she was close to it and her ending was Gold. Dominics wasn't even the Bronze. The judges decisions at this event were both unethical & racist to the core!! How did they sleep at nite?? Yes she had a major boo-boo on vault, but her performances on all other routines were close to perfection that alone should've kept her in 3rd. One thing i respected about Bella was when the judges try to underscore one of his girls with a bull shit marking he let there incompetence be known that coach fought & fought until he couldn't. This is a trait more coaches should have!!!
Li Li’s BB was insane, what an original and surprising routine!
The commentary is so good; I love that they actually talk about the elements and how each athlete has been working to adapt to the code at the time instead focusing on drama.
Of course… it’s Bart and Kathy😉!
My thoughts exactly 😉!
Bart Conner and Kathy Johnson - you won't find better commentators anywhere in the country!
Kelly Hill is such a wonderful coach and her comments to Dominique with her second vault just exemplifies that. She is such a great role model.
I know.. I've never felt such pain for a gymnast like I did for Dominique. She had the title and lost it. When she cried I did
No athlete has ever devastated me like Dominique Dawes. She’s still my favorite though ❤️
What an amazing coach. Pure pride and love for her student, such a great moment to witness. Wish all coaches were as awesome as her
@@JamesFrew1 omg, so true. In the 96 Olympics she was first in all-around and only had the floor exercise left. I thought she was a lock😣

Wow at the backspin of Li Li is so unique

Given the hype for Miller to win, it is definitely remarkable how close Dawes was before the ill-fated vault
It required Miller to underperform on her beam by like two tenths from her score.
@@SDoesNotKnow The whole competition was a fugly mess. All the top gymnasts made mistakes somewhere and most of them (apart from Miller and maybe Dawes) did not even have 10 start values on most events yet.

Cody Desjardins no 10s because of the new scoring system.
