Hi Bjørn, me again. Suggestion for RUclips presentation. This may be just me, I'm over 70, but I find it difficult to identify the relevant performance parameters you show on some of the app screen shots. The Excel spreadsheets are ok with the helpful highlighting but I find some of the phone app screen shots overwhelming, I'm trying to listen to your valuable commentary and spot which parameter you are talking about at the same time. Freeze framing does not help. Any chance you could either dim out the other numbers or put some sort of marker frame around the relevant figure? To use an old expression I can't see the tree for the forest!
As a reference, I drove my LRSM (MY23) on a road trip in Norway this summer (from Sweden), average consumption 14.7 kWh/100km, 3448 km and average speed 61 km/h :)
In the range assistant click on the arrow on the right side to get a timeline reading of you consomption including the battery heating. My LRSM 22 is averaging 15.8kwh/100km on mixed driving conditions in summer and 24-25 in winter (Canada here so, -10 to -20C)
You can notice that the battery is heating if you check the new screen under Range Assistant. You have to press the "arrow" there to get the screen with consumption data per km.
I tested both yesterday (Polestar 2 SM LR 2024 vs i40 eDrive40). The BMW was scary fast on acceleration (my 7yo son was scared when we tested it) and it had very good quality in the interior. But the Polestar feels like a VW Golf, perfect for city, for small roads and even longer trips. Less flashy, more practical and still pretty fast and long range. I am torn, but price is so much cheaper in the Polestar right now with leasing... so I think it is going to be a Polestar.
Thank you Bjørn. Great that you have already tested the Polestar 2 LRSM. Would love it, if you could set it also into perspective vs. the BMW i4 edrive 40. ✌🏼
I've got over two years and 50K km on my 2021 P2, I noticed the "slack" in the cruise control was new with one of the many OTA software upgrades. I assumed as you did that the change was in the interest of slightly improving efficiency. I'm a bit jealous of the charging speed improvement with the new model, although to date, here in Canada there aren't even many chargers that can deliver the 150 kW I can take with ideal conditions. I love all the geeky details and thorough EV testing you do. Thanks for all your great work:)!
Nice to see they switched to RWD for their single motor variant. Five years ago this car would have been super impressive, but now we have so many great choices, we can be picky. Thanks for the tests and for your insights.
Not sure a good idea the car over-speeds downhill because some fix speed radars have very tight margin (can be down to a few km/h in France for instance). When I pick a fix speed I would like the car to keep it precisely and not worry about that...
I think moving the single motor to the rear is a nice upgrade by itself. The front wheel drive version had traction issues. It was weird having the front wheels squeal all the time when powering away from a stop.
Really? I've driven a few LR SMs and I don't think I've ever heard the tires squeal even when flooring the go pedal. Bad tires, maybe? Or a wet surface?
I rented the 2023 model of the PS2 LRSM 3 weeks ago for 4 days. Driving on the Autobahn most of the time, going between 105 and 115km/h (about 800km) and another nearly 200km in the city and out of the city (not on the Autobahn) I got an overall consumption of 13.9 kw/h per 100km as displayed by the car. Wheels were 19" and weather was dry and hot at 29 degrees celsius. AC was turned on to 23 degrees celsius. According to your results the 2024 Model is no improvement to the previous versions, Björn. I have to get my hands on a PS 2 LRSM Model year 2024 and see how it performs in my hands. I had a 2020'Tesla Model 3 SR for nearly two years, which I sadly had to sell after that. With that car I had an average consumption of 13.9 at the end. Between April and November average consumption was about 12.8kw/h on 18" all season tires. I test drove the 2023 Model 3 SR a few weeks ago and it felt like it was more powerful than the one I had although, on paper, it is slower to accelerate. It was such a joy to ride. The new Model 3 (2024) which was just released doesn't appeal to me from a design point of view. I miss the wood trim and the front end lacks exitement. I loved the old drl and front. I would so much love to buy one of the last Model 3 SR but I sadly lack the money. PS 2 MJ 2024 and Tesla Model 3 are my absolut favourite cars. I just love both of them. PS needs to do something about the price, though. But as mentioned before, I have no money for neither of those at the moment. I really enjoy your reviews, Björn. Your style is fun and you show the facts and things I like to know about the EVs you present.
Hello, Bjørn. I noticed that a new Fisker Center+ had an official opening at Vestby on this Tuesday. South-east of Oslo. Yesterday they delivered around ten Ocean One to customers. Maybe you have an opportunity to get your hands on one from Fisker Norway at that facility soon?
So this car is advertised as 406 miles on the Polestar website but at a constant speed of 120km/h it gets 225 miles. This shows that WLTP testing values mean nothing and should at least include an average consumption with speeds at 90km/h and 120km/h.
It's because WLTP is a combined testing cycle with a relatively low average speed of about 50 km/h. However, yes, if you want close to 640 km or about 400 miles at 120 km/h, WLTP would likely have to be around 900-1000 km/ 550-600 miles.
Hi Bjørn, I like the driver control layout in the Polestar range and this car is a nice uplift. Thank you for the review. I still feel that the Tesla MY is a better fit for my requirements. Too many options have to be added to the Polestar to bring it up to the same capability. Having said that RWD is a more driver experience orientated architecture than FWD and separates power delivery from the steering. I like the external look of the car and obviously it is very well put together. But Tesla has the integrated sat nav and supercharger network making range anxiety a thing of the past - at least where I am. I much prefer manual controls to touch screens but that's a trade off I am prepared to make for other perceived Tesla advantages. Again, thanks for posting - it all takes a lot of time and trouble.
The Polestar has the latest version of Google Maps, which is much more accurate than the Tesla Navi and it also uses all other charging stations for planning. The charging port is at the back left like Tesla, so you can use the SUC the same way.
As Torsten said, Google maps are more accurate, and Googles Android Automotive gives you a pretty accurate estimated SoC on arrival that updates as you go. Furthermore, you can tell the navi to only use Tesla and/or Ionity chargers. It´s basically like in a Tesla. Tesla Model Y is more of a family car than the Polestar 2 though. More space in the trunk, and rear seats are easier to access.
Currently I own an Ioniq 5 (Great car, but won't be a while until we get access to NACS in North America unfortunately, so I have been looking at different cars (not Tesla, though). I had Volvos before, and this car I think I'd like. It has some nice thigns it does (Looks fantastic, good range, okay charging speed on LRSM model, one of the best software integration, and I like the Its a Hatch that looks like a Sedan thing, plus Polestar has nice colors liek Thunder & Midnight); however, this car has a few niggles that, when coming from my Hyundai, would seem like a downgrade (smaller interior room, doesn't have some features like how Hyjndai shows you blind spot on console when youturn on turn signals, doesn't have the 235 kwh speeds of Ioniq nor 800 volt architecture, Hyyundai drives a bit more confortable and HDA2 is Great on road, whil Polestars is iffy, but okay, but I would change on looks alone, and I'd like the battery pack of the LR Sm on the Performance, to boost charging from 150kwh to the 205 of the new 82kw battery, but if you want AWD you loose that charging speed). Also, despite range and charging speed, I think charge to 80% is listed at 40 minute where as Hyundai acan do about 20?) (though due to chargers I NEVER GET OVER 150 speeds, so do I really loose anythign goign for a Mach-E or Polestar that has slower charging? Only if Tesla superchargers are available on Hyundai/Kias, which from what I hear may not happen for another year or so.... Hense, Polestar 2 is tempting! even in RWD (this trim)

Would be curious about how RWD version drives in snow... Its a Volvo, I'd imagine good enough (I'm thinking to get this version, LR SM Plus) to replace AWD Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited.... MOstly because in North America we get NACS (Tesla Supercharger) access, where as Hyundai won't likely get that for at least another year (Hyundai/Kia) and while my Hyundai theoretically can charge faster, due to poor network maintenance, I rarely get to charge above 140-150 kwh here, so while its nice when I get 235 kwh charge speed, and the 18 minute 10-80 percent, I rarely see that, and am often about 30 minutes in chargers during long trips. WOuld be nice to have this car with quite a bit more range, but more importantly, this version can go to about 205 kwh O believe, and it can charge at the more reliable Tesla Superchargers (v3?) so, Yeah, I'd take this on road trips!
