    Move over AntHillArt, theres a new guy in town! So today I decided I was going to pour molten aluminum on something. I just finished a new propane powered furnace and I wanted to put it to the test!
    I don't know why my brain jumped to watermelon, but I'm glad it did. What was going to be a way to waste the afternoon turned into an amazing discovery!
    Those asking what it smelled like: Sickly sweet with base-notes of burning hair.
    For those who say this is not science, I disagree. This experiment was a way to apply a lot of the things I learned throughout the years. I designed a burner for propane, and a special cement based refractory cement to withstand the heat.

    • @SafetyLucas
      @SafetyLucas 9 лет назад +8

      ***** I love all the psychology that we come up with for youtube. One could argue that if the highlight of the video isn't in the first 20 seconds then the viewer will get bored and move on, or on the flip side the viewer might have been willing to watch the whole thing, but since they saw the end result in the beginning they don't need to watch the rest of the video. You have to find a perfect balance of immediate interest and attention grabbing ambiguity to keep the average view on board for the whole video.

    • @TheBackyardScientist
      @TheBackyardScientist  9 лет назад +3

      Oh man tell me about it. Intros are very important. I always post my videos a few days earlier on facebook and g+ to see if anybody has any critiques. Do you ever look at your viewer retention in analytics?

    • @SafetyLucas
      @SafetyLucas 9 лет назад +3

      ***** Yeah I haven't looked at the most recent data for average viewer retention, but personally I won't watch a video completely if its more than about 7-8 minutes. (if its from a channel I have never seen before, if its from a channel I'm subscribed too though I'll watch up to about 20 minutes) Thumbnails are also really important. A good thumbnail (in my opinion) has to have punchy colors, the subject of it needs to take up about half the frame, the subject needs to have a high contrast from the background, and there needs to be a big enough lack of small details that when the image gets shrunken down to the size of a postage stamp it is still very clear what the subject of the picture is. Also I love it when the thumbnail shows just enough of the video's subject that you understand what the end result is, but it is just ambiguous enough to evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue that makes you want to find out more about it. I've heard that humans are a visual species that can sort through thousands of images in a matter of seconds. So having the picture that a viewer's eyes will be drawn to more than others is the real secret to success.

    @1:13 that right there, stabbing without your thumb on the end of the handle, good way to cut yourself. I learned that the hard way, severed a tendon that resulted in the loss of mobility in a finger. *LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE!*

    Hi Backyardscientist, I love ur vids and I really enjoy watching them. Last year I found a silver coloured nugget in the bush and didn’t know what it is, and I want to show it to you so you can tell me but I can’t, i thought it was platinum, then silver, then lead but it’s probably aluminium but I’m not sure. Keep up with the awesome work and I will keep watching
