As an electrical engineer, I have to say that if one megaphone was capable of amplifying another it would be a clear indication that some components were heavily overspecified. You want everything at the limit of amplification with acceptable distortion. Anything beyond that is wasted expense.
It is saturation. They can only produce output so loud. Once it hits that level, no matter how loud your input is, output is going to remain same, but distorted (non linearity)

3:12 Probably the reason that you got a louder sound with the megaphones in a loop was that they were all feedback-squealing at once, and so their combined sound was louder than hooking them together in a line and measuring just the front one's volume. :D
a megaphone speaker can only get to a certain level, lets say 90db, so having another megap emitting a 90db in he microphone its still gonna come out the second one as 90db its not going to magically make it louder. isn't this common sense?
+TheDeduction Surely only if they happen to be in phase, and surely that a) has its limits and b) only really works for a clean sine wave. This would seem to explain the feedback loop being so much louder though.
It's called exponential growth; if sound is increased up to 90 db with a megaphone, then the amplified sound should theoretically be multiplied by that amount of db for each megaphone, meaning it wouldn't stay the same... Theoretically
120 is the amount of sound that a jet plain makes as it takes off and the volume at which I can shout without putting an exesive amount of strain on my self
Shouting in someone's ear is 110 db. The loudest human voice recorded is 129 dB. (Jill Drake) Maybe plains make 120 db at takeoff, but a *plane* is closer to 150 dB at 25 meters. Any lower decibel readings were recorded at a distance of hundreds of feet. Why would it even be possible that you could make as much noise as a jet engine at takeoff? They are moving way more air than you could ever conceivably do.
This is exactly what I expected, and, you're exactly right about why it isn't that much louder. The amplifiers clip. The first megaphone is pretty loud, but still coherent. the next megaphone is louder, but clipped.(saturation distortion) After that, the rest are just a square wave, at the fundamental frequency of your voice. The first 2 megaphones are loud, the rest of the 8, are maybe half again louder, than the first two. As for breaking the wine glass, the only way that would happen, is if the resonant frequency of the wine glass matched the resonant frequency of the horn. Otherwise, there just isn't enough amplifier power, to do it. you would have better luck, finding the right note on a trumpet, that matches the resonant frequency of the glass, even though, the amplifier in a megaphone is ~10 watts, and a person can barely blow more than 1/2 watt into a brass instrument, breaking glasses is all about resonance.
For every time you double the number of speakers you add 3db to the volume. It gets a lot of speakers real fast, after doubling it 20 times you have over 1.000.000 speakers... That is the number of speakers you need to go from 60db to 120db.
For the record permanent hearing loss occurs at virtually all sound levels, it's just that it needs to be sustained for longer periods of time -or more frequent- for it to do the same damage as a louder sound.
Spartons United101 Swollen bone? You're new to hurting peoples feelings aren't you? Most I think he'll take from that shithouse insult is second hand embarrassment and immense amounts of cringe, kiddo.

Plus the amplified noise becomes so loud that it feeds back into it's own mic & you get...feedback.
slight correction, 3 dB increase is an doubling of loudness. For most ppl this will be a bit higher, around 5/6dB. (6dB is where the air pressure doubles, as where the pressure is 1.4x @ 3dB) additional information: to gain that 3dB of increase, you need to double the output power of an amp. so 10dB @ 25W will mean you need to have 50W to get 13dB output, and 100W to get 16dB. my 2 cents :)
Richard stremme i was thinking the same but did a quick google search of 'relative loudness' and it turns out a human will 'perceive' a doubling of loudness from a 10 dB increase.
+Richard stremme Yes, a 3dB increase requires twice the power, but isn't twice as loud. Depending on frequency, 6dB to 10dB is perceived as doubling in loudness.
Richard stremme The number that matters here is the doubling in SPL. Human perception requires an additional amount of dBSPL to result in a doubling of loudness to accommodate our lack of hearing in very low frequencies and very high frequencies. But the cilia in your ear could care less about this, so the 6dB SPL number is much more important. I mean, if you were to play a sound at 30khz at 160db right next to your ear, you wouldn't even hear it. you would just feel pain and then go deaf. I mean, there's a reason why OSHA has a 5dB exchange rate versus the NIOSH and EPA's 3db rate, as the latter are being excessively conservative so as to overprotect people of all ages in the general workplace instead of construction workers over a 40 year career.
diego castro It's not because the sound waves from each mega phone have more chance to escape and therefore the sound is not amplified as much as maybe it should be. I'm not saying it would be mega death loud but it'd just not the same as the cartoon
It's logic, the megaphone can only be louder up to a certain dB, so it doesn't matter how much sound waves dont hot the mic o the megaphone if it's a inch or 2 of difference
1:08 Permanent hearing damage occurs around 120 decibels

slight correction, 3 dB increase is an doubling of loudness. For most ppl this will be a bit higher, around 5/6dB. (6dB is where the air pressure doubles, as where the pressure is 1.4x @ 3dB)
additional information: to gain that 3dB of increase, you need to double the output power of an amp. so 10dB @ 25W will mean you need to have 50W to get 13dB output, and 100W to get 16dB.
my 2 cents :)
I mean, there's a reason why OSHA has a 5dB exchange rate versus the NIOSH and EPA's 3db rate, as the latter are being excessively conservative so as to overprotect people of all ages in the general workplace instead of construction workers over a 40 year career.

they're not set up like it was in the Simpson. Bart puts each megaphone inside of the previous one. Not placed in front of them
Blanco its the same thing
diego castro It's not because the sound waves from each mega phone have more chance to escape and therefore the sound is not amplified as much as maybe it should be. I'm not saying it would be mega death loud but it'd just not the same as the cartoon
It's logic, the megaphone can only be louder up to a certain dB, so it doesn't matter how much sound waves dont hot the mic o the megaphone if it's a inch or 2 of difference
They needed to be spaced out or feedback makes them unusable.
