If he fully melted the mixture, silicon in aluminum functions much the same as carbon in iron- it allows hardenability and depending on the microstructure it can get very hard. 4000 series alloys can have upwards of 10-12% silicon and many have strengths comparable to mild steel but at roughly 1/3 the weight.

Seeing the heat transfer in the water was really cool
I used to do glassblowing and whenever somone would mess up we dunk it in a bucket of water and sometimes it will immediately crack, sometimes it just sizzles and when left exposed to the open air then it will shatter. It was interesting to see
