  • One of the most common thoughts in Bloodborne's lore community is that the Amygdala is more than it seems. Rather than being a collective of unique individuals, some believe the Amygdalae are one interconnected species that exists as a kind of hivemind. In this episode of Fear the Old Lore, we'll take a quick look at the Amygdalae and see if this idea holds up to scrutiny.
Thanks go to The BestiaryYT for bringing the idea back to my attention. It motivated me to make this video in response

I didn't even realize Amygdala were considered to have a hive mind until you made this video😅
They've always seemed individualistic to me, so I would agree with your interpretation, but I appreciate the additional information about Bloodborne lore nonetheless. It's always nice seeing more Bloodborne content from you.

I think they are individuals, and play the roles that the "demons" did in Arthur C. Clark's book "Childhood's End". I believe Miyazaki referenced it as an influence in one of his interviews. It makes a lot of sense to me.

The way I always looked at it was that each of the great ones evolved separately, as an individual, hence they all look so different, but amygdala evolved as a group. Think how gardens of eyes all look like other gardens of eyes or all living failures look like any other living failure because they all come from the same source.
      That’s my theory at least.

My guess is that the amygdala is one being able to transcend time and space and exists in multiple places at once. Every iteration has a different perspective on the situation and acts accordingly.
I always found it odd that whenever amygdala is mentioned, they seem to be referring to one single being despite there clearly being multiple. Could also mean that we’re the only ones that can see more than one.

I think I agree for the most part. I never really considered them as hive-minded beings, I just assumed they were a sort-of 'class' of great one, either because they ended up that way from a shared source/cause, or are just a natural state of progression for certain beings in their climb towards higher forms of existance. Or maybe they're just a race of beings that are mostly independent like you suggest, and come down to feed or observe for whatever reasons they might have. Though I assume that they communicate in SOME way, or have some relation to eachother, because one teleports you to the lecture hall/nightmare frontier which leads you directly into an area dominated by another Amygdala. Could be the very same Amygdala that sent you there, just in another plane of reality, or they are separate entities who have some shared aim that we don't quite know. Another point about their potential communication is the fact that so many appear in yahar'gul at once, as if they converged there or already were there all along just hidden behind the veil of the bloodmoon. But overall, the point you made about their different treatment of the player would seem to discredit the theory of the hive mind, just on the basis that if linked, they should all have the same general direction/programming from the hive that leads them to act in sync...but that isn't true. They just respond uniquely/independently to the player, some teleport, some beam, some just stare at you creepily.

Nice! Love me some Fear the Old Lore, even the compact versions. I think you're on to something when you talk about the connection between the Gardens of Eyes and the Amygdalae. There's something interesting that links the Gardens of Eyes, the Amygdalae, Rom, Ebrietas and the Bloodlickers. It's an idea I've been mulling and was thinking I might throw together in a video later this year. Thanks for continuing to share thoughts on Bloodborne!

Real question is, is why did they seemingly laser burn so many of the people that once lived in Yahar'gul? These lasers burning or petrifying the people, and leaving lingering flames that burn anything that touch them?
Why do they all perch on or in buildings? Why does Amygdala in the nightmare fight you? Why'd they alter Patches and those like him to become spider men?
Nothing they do has any consistency other than the aforementioned perching on buildings. Unless you equate what they do with being the will of someone or something over them. People say hivemind because it sounds inhuman, but I think it's more that they're vassals of The Great Ones. Like a race that almost ascended, but can't quite get there. Perhaps by existing as interstitial beings, their wills are given over more easily to Great Ones with the will to use them. Pawns greater than humans, but with the inability to become true Great Ones or even serve as breeding vessels. Some of them are thralls to The Moon Presence, while others are thrall to uhh, Mergo's Wetnurse?
Hence why some impede and seek to harm you, while others usher you towards your goal.

Whether or not they are a hive mind per se I certainly think the amygdalae are a form of "plural" great one, with at least a common motivation/purpose even if not literally being a singular entity. My personal pet theory is that amygdalae, collectively, are the guidance that Ludwig found in the in the holy moonlight sword. The guidance rune refers to "beings of light" and "sprites" (plural), they were found in "darkness, or perhaps nothingness" and the sword itself also describes this guidance as private and elusive, all of which is evocative of the literally invisible amygdalae. Plus the only real information we're given about this guidance is that it empties Ludwig's mind of fear - the amygdala being the region of the human brain that controls the fear response. I haven't seen anyone else share this take but I'll die on this hill 😅

The idea of Amygdalae being a hive mind in an insect like sense would kinda remove their alien nature, which is key part of the Great Ones. They are not meant to be easily understood and interpreted OOC. My own take would be more that they are a single being. With each creature being more like a cell within a body. Built in with a specific traits and behaviours, which when gathered together, can create something more complex. Just like a body is more advanced than a single cell. However it has to be said that it's just a fan theory made to make them more interesting. Most probably they are made like this, so that there can be many Great Ones present throughout Yah'argul, to emphasize the proximity of the Red Moon and the effects of Mensis Ritual.

Saying that they are a hive mind is pure invention, because there is not a single piece of information in the game that supports that idea. Saying they are a hive mind and saying they are the children of a a Winter Lantern and the Brain of Mensis are the same thing: something someone invents without any base, only their imagination.

    • @LastProtagonist
      @LastProtagonist  5 месяцев назад +5

The Brain of Mensis has the same texture files and lattice structure enclosing its head that an Amygdala does. It's just terribly deformed. Mug on the BB Discord also found the Brain has the same number of small eyes as the Amygdalae, but it has 7 larger eyes as well iirc. Additionally, the Brain's hands also feature the same kinds of stigmata as the Amygdalae. I'll agree there isn't a ton of evidence to support the theory, but there is some.

A " hive mind" is not the term one would use; the Amygdalae, as you said, don't display that much cohesion. In fact, their fighting style indicates that they are not particularly intelligent, or rather, do not possess human faculties of self-preservation; attacking wildly and without reservation, ripping of their own arms just to gain more reach.
No. The term I would use for them is:
    " Angels".
    Odd, right?
Think of angels in the old sense of the word; messengers. Servants of a higher power. Mysterious hands of " God" or the equivalent.
The Amygdalae are clearly lesser in both rank and intelligence than the Great Ones we know by name; they serve duties given by these Great Ones, as seen with the one taking you to the Nightmare by Kos' command.
They do not likely serve any specific Great One; they serve all of them. Perhaps one at a time; perhaps all of them all the time. Maybe that's why they possess so little cohesion; what servant could hope to serve two masters and be consistent?

    • @lordberossus2545
      @lordberossus2545 5 месяцев назад

On this point; bloodborne is the story of jesus, told in cthonic dark imagery instead of feathery angel imagery. The Angel Gabriel visits Mary, tells her she will miraculously conceive of a child. Smaller angels exist among men, and they have statues to them. The Amygdala/Messengers.

That is one way to think about it.
It is true that Christian ideals about birth, sin and parenthood are present( most notably in Childhood's Beginning, where you turn into a Great One who " begins humanity's childhood" and ascension, thus redeeming and curing them of beastly idiocy) , but I believe it is a more general comment on parenting for one reason:
      The Doll.
The Doll's existence, and her direct comparison of her situation to ours, indicates a cycle of sorts. We humans created the Doll; the Great Ones created humans; someone else created the Great Ones.
This isn't some " infinite turtles" argument, but a demonstration of the generational nature of creation, Insight and ascension.
As we are, the Great Ones once were. As the Great Ones are, we will become.
That said, I do hear the Church Of Latter Day Saints has similar ideas; who knows?

    • @lordberossus2545

@@alyseleem2692 The doll is exceptional because she is a truly artificial creature. She doesn't have human conceptions like pregnancy, miscarriages and post partum depression.
"Every Great One loses its child, and then yearns for a surrogate, and Oedon, the formless Great One, is no different. To think, it was corrupted blood that began this eldritch liaison."
We in the Childhood's Beginning ending have what we never see great ones having. An unconditionally loving mother to raise us.
