    I had both Pantographs cut through on my H type coupled set one time in Jetty Road Glenelg and they hooked up on the overhead line, instantly stopping the Trams.
    This peanut of an Inspector turned up and screamed at the top of his lungs "lower those Pantographs"!
    I calmy replied "I can't, they're stuck".
    Took him a bit to get it through his thick skull

    The Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham Lines will be running through the Metro Tunnel by 2025 and the Metro Tunnel will have direct access to the Melbourne Airport Rail Link by 2029.
    But the Suburban Rail Loop from Cheltenham to Melbourne Airport is still another 30 years away!

    How do they lift up when they’re not connected to power? Is it air compression or is there some kind of battery?

    • @roadwolf2
      @roadwolf2 Год назад +10

      They use air pressure to lower the pantograph and preload the springs that raise it and maintain the pressure on the overhead

      They are raised using Main Resevoir air which is stored within the trains reservoirs. If no air is present, then a battery operated compressor can be used to charge the drums up in order to raise the pantographs.

      switching device disconnects the high voltage supply until the pantograph is raised.

    is it switching from 3rd rail to 25kv overhead?

    • @jarydm87
      @jarydm87 Год назад +3

      The overhead voltage here is 1500v DC, and no 3 rd rail. This is is two 3 car EMU running as 6, so maybe they are using the other pantograph?

      @@jarydm87 really? i tought the UK converted to 25k ac and only france and the netherlands are still using 1500v DC.
      Probably switching pantograph then yeah, or starting up.

    • @jarydm87

      @@melaniedrogr951 UK may have, but this is in Melbourne Victoria, Australia. They and Sydney both use DC. Queensland in Australia use 25kv.
