  • Here's a video from the mid 1980's produced by Common Wealth Engineering (ComEng). They made 3 mock ups for the new Tangara contract to be awarded by the State Rail Authority (SRA) NSW Australia. The mock ups were for standard length suburban cars of 23 metres one with widened stair wells one with standard, and a 25 metre long coach (the same length as SRA's intercity cars) with widened stair wells. The IC length coach was being pushed by ComEng; however SRA decided to choose Goninan's offering. The loss of the contract (146 cars) helped drive ComEng to declare bankruptcy, and the plant closed soon after

If the Comeng did produce the Tangara, it could had made the "Double Deck Design & Development" (The 4D project) in Melbourne to possibly succeed, delivering all 20 four car double deck design in Melbourne. This would likely become decommissioned as of 2021 to make way for the new single deck HCT.

one of the famous train fleet and sad story of Comeng cannot get this tender. COMENG is so passion for this roject. although (Nsw government decision inflavor Goninan..)
few years later Comeng also building our Phase 1 Light Rail Car in Hong Kong around 1986-1988.(this is a tragic project despite the rollingstock are top notch quality ( It still being strong and run smoothly. They just got refurbishment by UGL around 2010-2013 ) and major caused ANI to sold and sperate Comeng factory...)

So, this was pretty much what killed off Comeng... they lost the war for a significant part of the CityRail fleet design process to Goninan.

Apparently SRA gave the Comeng drawings of the DDS to Gonninans for some competition

Thatll be the 4-D you guys had down there, only low density seating 2*2 upstairs as although the track gauge is broard in Vic the loading gauge is smaller than NSW, got some pics I took of the MetLink 4-D down in Newport depot before it got cut up

4:35. They are fooling them self. Since when do 85 passengers stand well back, all to the same side allowing 85 other passengers clear space to step onto the platform and leave. Where are the 3 or 4 pushy passengers who wont wait for people to get off. Instead pushing their way on. There were also no prams or push bikes.

griffin rails Goninan was the one who made the final design. This was a mockup by Comeng, who were competing for the contract.

Original Comeng is the most strong competitor to be award this project.
but due to complicated circumstances. (Which related to SRA themselves was voice they need the train being made in Queensland.. )(arrcoding to memories booksby Late Comemg Engineer John Dunn)

Imagine if tangaras were that long, would contest the length of V sets…

Well even dafter is the insistence on medium width rolling stock outline for the much delayed new intercity fleet, a 10 car unit has less seats than an 8 car V set!
