It's supposed to be done inflating before you even touch it. That's why it has to inflate so fast, so your face (traveling at 50 mph) hits it after its a pillow
@Baseballdawg 02 properly timed airbags are fully deployed before your face hits them, so it should feel like hitting a hard pillow. it broke your mom's pinky because the bag deployed against her hand.

I have twice experienced an airbag deployment. The airbag is aimed at your chest, not your head/neck. It stops your forward movement so you don't hit the wheel or windshield.
Ferris Salah there's an interesting video about that topic including a watermelon falling onto a deploying airbag. The ( I think it was 6ms) faster airbag let the watermelon land safely rather than turning it into 1000 pieces.
Learning2Smile one of my friend car mechanic once is repaired a steering wheel, coz the airbag didn't worked or the Airbag light was on indicator I don't know, but when he unscrewed one bolt, the Airbag is hitted his face, almost broke his nose, then he said he will never repair airbags

Airbags contain a small amount of explosives. That's the only way that they are able to deploy so fast. They tested many different methods, but none could deploy the bag fast enough when a car began to hit an object in an accident. My other likely guess is because people don't just buy airbags because they want them. Usually they are bought out of need. So one would wonder why, i.e. what happened that caused them to go by one.

9V or 12V does not make a difference. Once the explosive charge goes off it goes off.
There was something wrong with the first airbag.
+sekopiski you don't think the extra voltage helps ignite it quicker? Just like how people try to use lower resistance wires in spark plug wires to make it a "hotter" spark...
ChrisFix No. It only needs enough to trigger the igniter for the explosives and 9V is plenty enough.
ChrisFix You had some airbags left over, try 9V on them ;)
That might be a cool experiment. I think it can matter because if the initial reaction isnt as strong and doesnt get over the activation energy curve enough, it might slow down the reaction just enough so the cover doesnt burst and the airbag does what you saw. Compared to the 12v that it is designed to work with which will definitely get the activation energy it needs to complete the exothermic reaction.
It could also be that that airbag relied on the steering wheel to unfold properly

The airbag didn't deploy forward because usually there's walls on each side, forcing it to deploy out of the weak front, since no walls were there, the airbag deployed sideways instead.

The airbag shot out of the sides because it'd normally have walls on each side (the steering wheel/airbag housing) that would force it to go out of the weaker front.

Your head hits the airbag after its fully inflated. If I'm correct I think the airbag is already deflating by the time your head hits.
As others have stated, your head, shoulders, knees, are supposed to come into contact with the airbag, just as it finishes deploying, so they aren't absorbing that force.
This is why it is a very bad idea, as a passenger, to have your legs up on the dash, and as a driver, why it is not a good idea to drive with one hand, at the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel.

There is no difference between 12v and 9v because its the explosive that deploys the airbag, if there is enough voltage to ignite the explosive, it will work just fine. So basically it was a faulty airbag. :)

The 12 volts over 9 volts doesn't matter some airbags can even work with 1.5 volts that's why its dangerous to install or remove airbags, so even the static electricity can make a airbag go off.
You should do more research into static electricity... Static electricity can be tens of thousands of volts.

For the next kicking video, install a brace to hold the airbag in place as a steering wheel to not loose the opposite direction energy and add a plat PSI meter to the ball to see what PSI the airbag hits the ball at. I think if the airbag was mounted, less energy would escape sides and backwards and apply more energy forward onto the ball. Still one of my favorite CF vids of all time tho!
