I'm literally eating a mango while watching your videos about mangos. MMMMMmmmmmmM... it tastes delicious, ssooooo sweet. With sweet aftertaste, but slightly sour, probably cuz I'm thirsty. 90% very soft and sweet, 5% sour and a little harder to bite, 5% mushy with weird sweetness. If I had to, I'd rate it 9,5/10. For 2.99 BGN or $1.45... $1.49, the mango was amazing and super duper enjoyable. I think I've been touching the mango way too much impatiently and made it slightly mushy in a few places, and it wasn't fully ripe, but oh well. I'm so much happier now, especially after watching your video. I haven't eaten it the whole mango, so I'll start watchin' the next vid. ...

In trinidad where I live when we plant down starch mango a type of mango one sprout does come out and in 3 years it does bear starch same with all of our varieties in trinidad and also two seedlings does come out sometimes and when we plant them down there are only slight differences but all the mangos we grow from seed in trinidad is from one seedling coming out of the seed and it the bear the same type of mango and when two grow from and same seed and it bear their are only slight differences because properly their are fully heirloom varieties
@@SleepyLizard in trinidad my parents and grandparents that's the only way their know how to get fruit tree so they set Julie, bread and cutlass mango all of these are types of mangoes in trinidad but they are more and they plant the seeds and it does bear those kind of mango example one of my grandparents ate a Julie mango and he plant the seed and he planted it down in the ground and it bear Julie even though there were bread mango trees so that means our mangoes in trinidad has not been cross with any other type but Mt aunts bought a grafted mango unknown variety and the neighbor ate some which she gave them and the mango turn out sour so that mean that is a hybrid so the older classic mangoes we know are not hybrid but the newer variety that now coming out in the market are hybrids. Excellent video on Mangoes! I remember my friends in Maui, Hawai'i had a MASSIVE mango tree in their backyard and when I visited them & I was in HEAVEN! I ate mangoes all day, every day right off their tree. It was one of those old trees that was 30-40 ft tall & wide and an ENDLESS supply of mangoes. I also ate fresh pineapple, bananas and many other tropical fruits right from their yard! Can they be grown in a high tunnel/greenhouse in zone 8B??? Let me know when you have some grafted trees for sale and I will definitely purchase one to add to my collection of tropical fruits. LOVE MANGOES as much as I LOVE avocados!!! Keep your eyes on TS Else. Some of the models show it going up into your area. Some have it getting into the Gulf so WHO KNOWS where the storm will blow! Deep South, Even though I just ate a lunch of homegrown mango and pineapple your description of you time in Hawaii makes me hungry for more! Mango is very sensitive to cold so zone 8b probably not gonna work for you. And yeah we been watching the storm and hoping it passes. We only fished for 15 minutes and engine trouble forced us back to the ramp. then we went home and got our little 10' Jon boat and went to a different pond and slayed 'em...got a bunch of bass! And yeah I will definitely publish my next livestream ahead of time...that was just to test the technology out. I'm already working on better lighting and audio and a few surprises. @@SleepyLizard What is mangoes temp sensitivity level? I have a heated greenhouse/high tunnel with a fan to circulate the air that I keep all my tropical & other cold-sensitive plants in. I also have Sansi Full Spectrum Grow lights. When night-time temps near 40(F) I move my ginger, turmeric, horseradish, dragon fruit, papaya's, avocado into the heated section. I also raise my veggies all winter in this greenhouse/high tunnel (tomato, peppers, eggplant, etc.) after I prune them back from their summertime growth. I have tomatoes & bell peppers in their 3rd year of growing & still producing well. Lots of work to move them but you do what you have to do to have fresh veggies & someday, fruit, year-round. Glad you had a good day fishing, even with the engine trouble you had to start with. Our fishing has been horrible here with all the rain we have had since TS Claudette! We had over 20 inches of rain for the month of June and just had another 3.5 inches in less than 30 min to start off July! Rain every single day (even some thunderstorms) for the next 10 days according to my weather forecast. I have a 14 ft Jon boat with an 18 hp Tohatsu 4 stroke motor that gets me where I want to go WHEN THE RIVER ISN'T OUT OF THE BANKS like it is now. All the rain north of us comes down thru our river system and flows into the Gulf so it is treacherous to even think of going out there now. All of the fish are in the woods now, anyway...right in the peak of our bass/bream/shellcracker season! I may have to try some frogging a little later this month once the water recedes and I can get up into the backwater areas where they love to hang out on the banks. Nothing for me to get at least a cooler full every time I go out and I'm talking BIG BULLFROGS with legs the size of chicken legs! I don't fool with the small chumps, too much work for too little meat!! LOL!! I used to do a lot of flounder, reds, Spanish/King mackerel & Ling fishing but haven't been in several years. Would go 2-3 times a month when I had my cuddy cabin and could stay the night to fish the oil rigs. Love fishing almost as much as I love whitetail deer hunting and THAT is another LONG story!! LOL!! I'm very good at hunting and usually bag 3-4 per season, just what I need to fill the freezers for a year. A quick cutie...my late hubby got tired of cleaning all the deer I would harvest. I was gathering my gear for an afternoon hunt and he took the clip from my .44 magnum and left me ONE BULLET! He said that would assure him I would only have one shot (not uncommon for me to get two in my 40 acres of thick woods). He heard my shot and radioed me to see if I got anything so he could bring the 4 wheeler to load up. I told him no, I got them both! He said, Yeah, right...with one bullet?!?! Long story short, there were two deer standing side by side and my shot was into the front shoulders of the 1st deer into the front shoulder of the 2nd deer and put them both down. That is my go to sweet spot as it takes out their front legs, goes thru the heart/lungs and puts them down. (Sorry for the gruesome details but had to explain how I got two with one shot). He told that story so many times to all his hunting buddies and swore he tried everything he could, even giving me just ONE BULLET to curtail my harvesting but NOTHING worked with a sharpshooter like me! I have remarried now and my current hubby doesn't like to fish or hunt so I do it all by myself, launching/loading my boat & even cleaning/processing the fish/deer! I'm a backwoods REDNECK country gal that can do most anything any man around here can do. Still love my gardening & propagating which has taken priority in my life since I've gotten older. What were the cold sensitivity temps for mangoes? Having the heated greenhouse/high tunnel I may be able to grow a mango tree in there as I start heating it when nighttime temps drop to 40(F). I have 3 ungrafted trees that are 5 ft tall and one that is 3 ft tall, all with branches. Do I graft to a branch or do I have to cut them back & graft to the main trunk? Have you tried getting some Thai mangoes seedling? We have one that can be eaten green and they are sweet! We also have one that we call it elephant mango because it’s long like elephant trunk.
Hi Erin, Those are Monstera Deliciosa. They are decorative but they also give a delicious fruit. It's not really good for my avocado trees to have them around the base because they steal nutrients from my avocados but I only have them around the edge of the grove facing my house...again, for decoration. Hi Hawaiian, I put the whole pod in plastic shopping bags along with the skin from the avocados and keep them in a cool damp location but not the fridge. then when I'm feeling brave (because they stink). I will open the bag and plant the ones that germinated.

LSanti, I'm not sure on that variety but you can tell by looking at the seed. I have a vid coming out in 3 weeks on how to tell if poly or mono embryonic
Every backyard mango I tasted in Miami was delicious. I wonder if they are mostly grafted, or if the success rate of mango is better than with avocados.

I want to plant a mango tree, I live in Southern California and have a decent size back yard, my local nursery has Valencia Pride and Mallika trees available, I like the Valencia however I read that it grows to big, is it possible to keep it small without effecting it’s production? Jim, both varieties are delicious. Valencia pride is one of my favorites. I wouldn’t worry about how big the tree grows on its own because you’ll be pruning it and shaping it anyhow. My neighbor has a Valencia pride Grove and he keeps the trees about 18 feet high by 16 feet wide and he has excellent production every year. In full disclosure this year his production wasn’t that good but that’s because we had a frost in our neighborhood. But usually he’s loaded with Valencias

I love mangoes and I found your channel maybe a couple months ago I want to let you know that I planted nine mangoes a couple of them have two plants by one seed is this unusual I would love to send you pictures so you could see what I'm saying also I save my banana peels and peach pills and mango pills and I ground them all up and put it in with some dirt and then I kind of mixed the soil I wonder if that has any effect on the growth of them I'm quite new at this but you have inspired me I am 50 years old and now I'm in a wheelchair but I have great hands God bless and stay safe your videos are inspiring

When looking for mangoes to Plant in a pot, is it necessary to only look for dwarf or semi dwarf trees or can i prune a nornal tree and keep it at a manageable height?

I got 6 different Mangos the other day from our Asian grocery store. I wish I had written the names down, This store is the only one that sells them with names. One was so good, so so good, omg I never tasted a Mango this good. It was red and green skin with lots of black spots on it. I almost didn't want to buy it, because of all the black spots, but boy was I glad I got it. No fiber that sticks to the teeth and a taste between pinapple and banana with a little citrus. One was not good at all and the other 4 were good, but not blowing my taste buds like this one. I will go back tomorrow and see if they still have those and get a whole box and also wirte the name down. I had no clue, Mangos could taste this good. I usually get my Mangos from Aldi, which are ok, but not overly exciting.

I know these are monoembryonic. However, I want to plant them. I don't have a tree to graft from, I just have seeds. If I plant them, I may not get the variety that I want BUT will it still bear some kind of mango? I don't want to end up with no mangoes after 3/5/10 years. Thanks again!
most likely you will get mangos eventually but it's not guaranteed and they won't be identical to the two you mentioned. maybe similar, maybe very different.
I live in Jacksonville and want to grow a Valencia pride and have a tree facing south and east wind against a cement wall do you think that’s a good microcliamte
mangos grow in usda hardiness zone 9b and above. Jacksonville is 9a so you're going to have a tough time growing mango up there. you guys get frosts and freezes and mango doesn't like that.
Do you use the same starting seed fertilizer 6-6-6 that you use in the avocado video you did or will be different numbers? By the way, the avocados are out of stock and mogotes not on stock 🤣😂
No, I use a different blend for mango but the bags are out in my shed and I don't recall it offhand. I;'ll get back to you later. And yeah, unfortunately my business is seasonal. They type of avocados I grow are harvested between September and January.
Hi Softsuga, the most common polyembryonic variety sold here in stores is Atulfo. You might find that in your local supermarket. to get a list of the rest I got this from google: 'Cambodiana', 'Carabao', 'Corazont, 'Paho', 'Pahutan', 'Pico', 'Senora' and 'Strawberry'

The Mexican vegetable sellers at the flea market sell a kind of mango that is yellow and about 2 inches I do not know the variety they seem to come from Peru or Guatemala. Anyway, I'm trying to find out if I can get a dwarf varieties or keep a variety trimmed in a 8ft greenhouse?

I live in a very small house, with an even smaller yard. I don't intentionally plant anything. Meaning I don't buy trees, transplants, seeds, etc. What I do is compost kitchen scraps in the yard. Some 5 gallon buckets for "worm bins". When the buckets are full, I dig holes, toss in kitchen scraps, and everything will compost underground. As a result, whatever grows; grows unintentionally. Every year, I get lots of great "accidental" produce. This year, for the first time ever, a mango seed sprouted and it's growing. Keep in mind that the average temperature in San Francisco is 55 degrees, it's overcast and foggy - not exactly the tropical conditions that mango needs. So I'm wishing, and hoping - that it actually grows.
yeah, mangos are real survivors in them compost pits. but yeah a bit to cold where you are to cultivate them. Although I know there are some nurseries working to create California varieties.
@@SleepyLizard I think that the University of California's ag program does a lot of work in that area. Rumor is that they have developed new figs which do not need a pollinator, and they are always working on avocado.

@@SleepyLizard Don't know lol. Mangos I know are the ones that grow true to fruit, wich are very common here in this area of my country(aparently they are called "indica variety"). Avocados I don't know yet because the house were I'm living had a huge tree of it, but fruit seems to be of smooth skin, chubby pear shaped and light green coloured

@@SleepyLizard yes I have a pawa avocado tree they come from northern Mexico it’s funny cause I planted it from seed it’s 19 years old it’s been giving fruit for the past two years but the avocados are smaller and it doesn’t taste the same it’s about 20ft tall the funny part is it was a haas avocado seed and I got different different tree so now I’m searching for grafted hall avocado tree and a Monroe

In trinidad where I live when we plant down starch mango a type of mango one sprout does come out and in 3 years it does bear starch same with all of our varieties in trinidad and also two seedlings does come out sometimes and when we plant them down there are only slight differences but all the mangos we grow from seed in trinidad is from one seedling coming out of the seed and it the bear the same type of mango and when two grow from and same seed and it bear their are only slight differences because properly their are fully heirloom varieties
according to the text books it should be reversed. interesting
@@SleepyLizard in trinidad my parents and grandparents that's the only way their know how to get fruit tree so they set Julie, bread and cutlass mango all of these are types of mangoes in trinidad but they are more and they plant the seeds and it does bear those kind of mango example one of my grandparents ate a Julie mango and he plant the seed and he planted it down in the ground and it bear Julie even though there were bread mango trees so that means our mangoes in trinidad has not been cross with any other type but Mt aunts bought a grafted mango unknown variety and the neighbor ate some which she gave them and the mango turn out sour so that mean that is a hybrid so the older classic mangoes we know are not hybrid but the newer variety that now coming out in the market are hybrids. Excellent video on Mangoes! I remember my friends in Maui, Hawai'i had a MASSIVE mango tree in their backyard and when I visited them & I was in HEAVEN! I ate mangoes all day, every day right off their tree. It was one of those old trees that was 30-40 ft tall & wide and an ENDLESS supply of mangoes. I also ate fresh pineapple, bananas and many other tropical fruits right from their yard! Can they be grown in a high tunnel/greenhouse in zone 8B??? Let me know when you have some grafted trees for sale and I will definitely purchase one to add to my collection of tropical fruits. LOVE MANGOES as much as I LOVE avocados!!! Mango is very sensitive to cold so zone 8b probably not gonna work for you. And yeah we been watching the storm and hoping it passes.
We only fished for 15 minutes and engine trouble forced us back to the ramp. then we went home and got our little 10' Jon boat and went to a different pond and slayed 'em...got a bunch of bass!
And yeah I will definitely publish my next livestream ahead of time...that was just to test the technology out. I'm already working on better lighting and audio and a few surprises.

@@SleepyLizard What is mangoes temp sensitivity level? I have a heated greenhouse/high tunnel with a fan to circulate the air that I keep all my tropical & other cold-sensitive plants in. I also have Sansi Full Spectrum Grow lights. When night-time temps near 40(F) I move my ginger, turmeric, horseradish, dragon fruit, papaya's, avocado into the heated section. I also raise my veggies all winter in this greenhouse/high tunnel (tomato, peppers, eggplant, etc.) after I prune them back from their summertime growth. I have tomatoes & bell peppers in their 3rd year of growing & still producing well. Lots of work to move them but you do what you have to do to have fresh veggies & someday, fruit, year-round.
Glad you had a good day fishing, even with the engine trouble you had to start with. Our fishing has been horrible here with all the rain we have had since TS Claudette! We had over 20 inches of rain for the month of June and just had another 3.5 inches in less than 30 min to start off July! Rain every single day (even some thunderstorms) for the next 10 days according to my weather forecast.
I have a 14 ft Jon boat with an 18 hp Tohatsu 4 stroke motor that gets me where I want to go WHEN THE RIVER ISN'T OUT OF THE BANKS like it is now.
All the rain north of us comes down thru our river system and flows into the Gulf so it is treacherous to even think of going out there now. All of the fish are in the woods now, anyway...right in the peak of our bass/bream/shellcracker season!
I may have to try some frogging a little later this month once the water recedes and I can get up into the backwater areas where they love to hang out on the banks. Nothing for me to get at least a cooler full every time I go out and I'm talking BIG BULLFROGS with legs the size of chicken legs! I don't fool with the small chumps, too much work for too little meat!! LOL!!
I used to do a lot of flounder, reds, Spanish/King mackerel & Ling fishing but haven't been in several years. Would go 2-3 times a month when I had my cuddy cabin and could stay the night to fish the oil rigs. Love fishing almost as much as I love whitetail deer hunting and THAT is another LONG story!! LOL!!
I'm very good at hunting and usually bag 3-4 per season, just what I need to fill the freezers for a year.
A quick cutie...my late hubby got tired of cleaning all the deer I would harvest. I was gathering my gear for an afternoon hunt and he took the clip from my .44 magnum and left me ONE BULLET! He said that would assure him I would only have one shot (not uncommon for me to get two in my 40 acres of thick woods). He heard my shot and radioed me to see if I got anything so he could bring the 4 wheeler to load up. I told him no, I got them both! He said, Yeah, right...with one bullet?!?! Long story short, there were two deer standing side by side and my shot was into the front shoulders of the 1st deer into the front shoulder of the 2nd deer and put them both down. That is my go to sweet spot as it takes out their front legs, goes thru the heart/lungs and puts them down. (Sorry for the gruesome details but had to explain how I got two with one shot). He told that story so many times to all his hunting buddies and swore he tried everything he could, even giving me just ONE BULLET to curtail my harvesting but NOTHING worked with a sharpshooter like me!
I have remarried now and my current hubby doesn't like to fish or hunt so I do it all by myself, launching/loading my boat & even cleaning/processing the fish/deer!
I'm a backwoods REDNECK country gal that can do most anything any man around here can do. Still love my gardening & propagating which has taken priority in my life since I've gotten older. BUT "THIS COUNTRY GAL WILL SURVIVE...EVEN WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH!!

What were the cold sensitivity temps for mangoes? Having the heated greenhouse/high tunnel I may be able to grow a mango tree in there as I start heating it when nighttime temps drop to 40(F). This is how I have 35-gallon + pots of ginger growing year-round & also keep my avocado trees alive.
Were you able to muddle thru the email I sent asking about the avocado scions? I have 3 ungrafted trees that are 5 ft tall and one that is 3 ft tall, all with branches. Do I graft to a branch or do I have to cut them back & graft to the main trunk? They are in 35-gallon pots and are grown in the greenhouse/high tunnel year-round.

Mangos get fussy around 40f so you're right on the edge.
As for your trees I would prune them and wait for new growth and graft onto that.

Have you tried getting some Thai mangoes seedling? We have one that can be eaten green and they are sweet! We also have one that we call it elephant mango because it’s long like elephant trunk.

Hi Erin, Those are Monstera Deliciosa. They are decorative but they also give a delicious fruit. It's not really good for my avocado trees to have them around the base because they steal nutrients from my avocados but I only have them around the edge of the grove facing my house...again, for decoration.

Hi Hawaiian, I put the whole pod in plastic shopping bags along with the skin from the avocados and keep them in a cool damp location but not the fridge. then when I'm feeling brave (because they stink). I will open the bag and plant the ones that germinated.

LSanti, I'm not sure on that variety but you can tell by looking at the seed. I have a vid coming out in 3 weeks on how to tell if poly or mono embryonic

As always another great video, especially for those of us just starting to get into planting Avocado and mango trees! I want to plant a mango tree, I live in Southern California and have a decent size back yard, my local nursery has Valencia Pride and Mallika trees available, I like the Valencia however I read that it grows to big, is it possible to keep it small without effecting it’s production? Sorry about the long paragraph I know your super busy and I admire you replying to your Fans!
Jim, both varieties are delicious. Valencia pride is one of my favorites. I wouldn’t worry about how big the tree grows on its own because you’ll be pruning it and shaping it anyhow. My neighbor has a Valencia pride Grove and he keeps the trees about 18 feet high by 16 feet wide and he has excellent production every year. In full disclosure this year his production wasn’t that good but that’s because we had a frost in our neighborhood. But usually he’s loaded with Valencias

I love mangoes and I found your channel maybe a couple months ago I want to let you know that I planted nine mangoes a couple of them have two plants by one seed is this unusual I would love to send you pictures so you could see what I'm saying also I save my banana peels and peach pills and mango pills and I ground them all up and put it in with some dirt and then I kind of mixed the soil I wonder if that has any effect on the growth of them I'm quite new at this but you have inspired me I am 50 years old and now I'm in a wheelchair but I have great hands God bless and stay safe your videos are inspiring

I got 6 different Mangos the other day from our Asian grocery store. I wish I had written the names down, This store is the only one that sells them with names. One was so good, so so good, omg I never tasted a Mango this good. It was red and green skin with lots of black spots on it. I almost didn't want to buy it, because of all the black spots, but boy was I glad I got it. No fiber that sticks to the teeth and a taste between pinapple and banana with a little citrus. One was not good at all and the other 4 were good, but not blowing my taste buds like this one. I will go back tomorrow and see if they still have those and get a whole box and also wirte the name down. I had no clue, Mangos could taste this good. I usually get my Mangos from Aldi, which are ok, but not overly exciting.

D. It's a tad too cold in Augusta but you can keep one as in indoor/outdoor house plant. but it won't fruit.

I have a question: I have some mangoes that I love called banginapalli mangos and also Rasalu mangoes, which are native to central India. I know these are monoembryonic. However, I want to plant them. I don't have a tree to graft from, I just have seeds. If I plant them, I may not get the variety that I want BUT will it still bear some kind of mango? I don't want to end up with no mangoes after 3/5/10 years. Thanks again!
most likely you will get mangos eventually but it's not guaranteed and they won't be identical to the two you mentioned. maybe similar, maybe very different.

I live in Jacksonville and want to grow a Valencia pride and have a tree facing south and east wind against a cement wall do you think that’s a good microcliamte
mangos grow in usda hardiness zone 9b and above. Jacksonville is 9a so you're going to have a tough time growing mango up there. you guys get frosts and freezes and mango doesn't like that.

No, I use a different blend for mango but the bags are out in my shed and I don't recall it offhand. I;'ll get back to you later.
And yeah, unfortunately my business is seasonal. They type of avocados I grow are harvested between September and January.

Hi Softsuga, the most common polyembryonic variety sold here in stores is Atulfo. You might find that in your local supermarket. to get a list of the rest I got this from google: 'Cambodiana', 'Carabao', 'Corazont, 'Paho', 'Pahutan', 'Pico', 'Senora' and 'Strawberry'

we prune or tip 1 time per year immediately after we harvest the last mango
I live in a very small house, with an even smaller yard. I don't intentionally plant anything. Meaning I don't buy trees, transplants, seeds, etc. What I do is compost kitchen scraps in the yard. Some 5 gallon buckets for "worm bins". When the buckets are full, I dig holes, toss in kitchen scraps, and everything will compost underground. As a result, whatever grows; grows unintentionally. Every year, I get lots of great "accidental" produce. This year, for the first time ever, a mango seed sprouted and it's growing. Keep in mind that the average temperature in San Francisco is 55 degrees, it's overcast and foggy - not exactly the tropical conditions that mango needs. So I'm wishing, and hoping - that it actually grows.
yeah, mangos are real survivors in them compost pits. but yeah a bit to cold where you are to cultivate them. Although I know there are some nurseries working to create California varieties.
@@SleepyLizard I think that the University of California's ag program does a lot of work in that area. Rumor is that they have developed new figs which do not need a pollinator, and they are always working on avocado.
