Hi there, love your channel. I just grew my fist mango tree, its about 2 months and its growing super fast. I would love to graft a Florida red mango. But not sure when to graft.
Thanks again for great video's. Question, how soon can I graft. Time of year and how tall or old does the plant/tree need to be? I planted a mango seed maybe 3 months ago? Started it the way you showed us. It is 8 inches high, now, from the top of the soil. I am dyeing to graft it from a friends large mango tree. Please tell me what to do!!!!! ?? Thanks... P.S. I just read one of your comments. You say Nov. Dec. is a good time to graft. So what about the age and/or height of the tree/plant, mine is 8 inches high? Thanks.
Hi Marc, how you doing? You can graft as soon as the diameter of the seedling matches the diameter of the seedling. Yes, right now is a good time to graft mango. An 8 Inch seedling is fine if the diameter matches the diameter of the cutting. Good luck!
You mentioned that you cut into the root stock off center. Is that just slightly off center? I've tried grafting mangos many times with no success. I always tried to cut the root stock straight down the middle, maybe that was part of my problem.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you! Also, I've found that the snipped root stock will constantly want to send up new branches. I'm assuming you break those all off when you see them so that maximum energy will go to the scion?
So can you explain zoning? Does the seed has to be local and graft of any variety ? Or both? Or seed can be from anywhere and graft have to be compatible with the zone?
does the graft have to be the same species of mango as the seed came from, in other words, what if you don't know exactly what type of mango the seed came from
Rocket Man, thanks for the question. I think what you mean by "species" is "variety". All mangos are of the same species. I only make this clarification because grafting must be done within species but not within variety. You can graft any type of mango to any other type of mango. On the other hand you can't graft mangos to apples which be be crossing species. Are you going to try your hand at some grafting?
Thank you for sharing this grafting instructions step by step, I will definitely give it a try. Can this work for an avocado tree? Or any other fruit tree I wonder?

Hi Boss lady, a grafted tree will produce in year 4
Great personality ,you have a new subscriber, would like to see a video of the results of the graphing that you did on the Hayden , thanks
Johannes, thanks for the subscription, I appreciate it. I sold all my grafted stock over the winter and spring so I have no update, sorry
@@SleepyLizard Next time, take care
Great videos! What do you do about moving to full sun?
after about a 18 months.
@@SleepyLizard wow, glad I asked, I was thinking a couple of weeks. LoL Thank you!!
when will cuttings be on sell again for
Mangos? Also do you sell cuttings for Avocados?
Is it possible to grow mangos in South Carolina? I know avocados can be done
Hi Raven,
I'm not selling cuttings right now. We sold out in the spring so my trees need to regenerate. It'll probably be July before I have any.
As for mango in South Carolina I'mafraid you're out of luck. It gets too cold up there.
Are you growing avocado now?
Hi there, love your channel. I just grew my fist mango tree, its about 2 months and its growing super fast. I would love to graft a Florida red mango. But not sure when to graft.
Pedro, You can graft whenever you want but right about now we're getting into prime grafting season...November or December would be a good time.
so i can stick the prune which will have the fruits into any small mango tree i grew from a mango seed from the store?
yep, that's the idea
@@SleepyLizard thanks for the answer! I like your videos
Thank you for sharing, I love your channel, what will be the best time of the year for South Floridian to do the grafting on the mango trees???
Elmer, you can graph now but the best time would’ve been 4 to 6 weeks ago right around Christmas time but you can graft all year long
Wait! I see others put a plastic bag over it. Do I keep it in a shaded area or direct sun?
Sometimes we put a plastic bag over it. And yes, we keep them in the shade house out of the sun.
Good luck!
Great video, why the offset cut ?
they guy who taught me told me it makes better contact with the bark that way.
You mentioned that you cut into the root stock off center. Is that just slightly off center? I've tried grafting mangos many times with no success. I always tried to cut the root stock straight down the middle, maybe that was part of my problem.
Slightly but noticeable to the human eye..there's clearly a narrow side and a thick side.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you! Also, I've found that the snipped root stock will constantly want to send up new branches. I'm assuming you break those all off when you see them so that maximum energy will go to the scion?
Yes you need to prune the rootstock so it doesn’t revert.
When you buy the mango prunes off any website, would you be able to just get the cutting and pop it in dirt, will it work?
no, that would require some prep, the cuttings are meant for grafting.
So can you explain zoning? Does the seed has to be local and graft of any variety ? Or both? Or seed can be from anywhere and graft have to be compatible with the zone?
If you want a Carrie mango tree, you graft a Carrie seedling on any other seedling?
Rozanah, not a carrie seedling, you take a cutting from a mature Carrie tree and graft it to any other seedling
Can you give you recommendations on the type of soil that you prefer? Any ratios and additives?
I use plain old store bought potting soil and I add fruit blend fertilizer every 60 days
So you don't get anything from grafting two seedlings?
that's correct. if you graft a seedling to a seedling you still have a seedling
How long of time is it from seed to useable rootstock
a few months, it's quick.
How many acres do you have? Im thinking i want to start a mango farm over here in sub tropical south texas
Joel, we have 5 acres.
Can you graft two different mango species?
Yes. But someone else will make this correction if I don’t. They are all the same species. They differ by variety. I knew what you meant though.
I've misread Mango to Avocado. :D Which cold hardy Avocado tree would you recommend?
does the graft have to be the same species of mango as the seed came from, in other words, what if you don't know exactly what type of mango the seed came from
Rocket Man, thanks for the question.
@@SleepyLizard yes it looks interesting but I will need to buy a graft stem because I don't have access to one I live in central Fl
@@rocketman3534 yes, that is the challenge
Thank you for sharing this grafting instructions step by step, I will definitely give it a try. Can this work for an avocado tree? Or any other fruit tree I wonder?
Yep. It will work on avocado and other fruit
@@SleepyLizard Even a Lychee Tree, also.
