Enjoyed this--your explanation/demo is sorely needed--wish I'd paid attention decades ago (I was size 8, 32DD) and tiny back, so shirts never fit! When I would try it, I was so much happier! I'm now about the same size as you now, and think FBA is even more critical! So sad women think their body is the reason for poor fit or clothes are meant to gap & wrinkle oddly & not realize off the rack clothing is made for profit, not a good fit!!

You can’t tell I need a full bust adjustment b/c , it’s not that my bust is so large really, but my torso, the bones that build my torso is tiny. I have also a 4” difference between my upper bust and lower bust.

Ok so i actually just came here to learn how to do a FBA even though i didnt think i needed one and i dont really sew - i just like to learn. BUT i learnt why i have gaping issues around my arms in some not strech tops and the ONE dress i tried to make - appart drom the bust line sitting too high and being too small too even with added adjustment LOL. Hi from Canada. Thanks for the lightbulb moment but I do have a question. If you were making a knit garment that’s fitted, would you follow this process or would you need to make your toile in stretch fabric and select the next size down to get your negative ease. 😊
I use same process as, I’m assuming you would be using a pattern suggested for stretch fabric and negative ease would have been considered already when pattern was made. You would still need to make an FBA as most patterns are made for a B bust. If I don’t make one even in stretch garments there is pulling where there shouldn’t be. Hope that helps. X
I've been making the size that fits my full bust but using the shoulder two sizes smaller and tapering out. I often get that baggy armhole look. I don't want to learn a FBA but I can see I need to. I wish pattern companies offered two cup sizes per pattern. Surely it wouldn't be hard for them to draft a B and say a D cup version?
There are a lot of pattern companies that do include several bust cup sizes now. If you search for dress patterns which include bust cup sizes it should bring up a few. It will change your sewing life if you learn to do an FBA. Believe me it makes such a difference to garment sewing if you need to do one. Good Luck!
I'm very new to sewing and I'm really struggling with some bits I've been trying to make a wrap style top but I don't want it crossed over to high up I don't mind showing a bit of cleavage the issues I'm having atm is that it seams to gape at the neck line I do the top then I add binding round the neck line a wide binding I'm wondering if it gaps because I need to use elastic in it or a bust adjustment/ I'm from the uk too

Here's my question: When you look at a commercial pattern's measurements, they list Upper Bust and Full Bust. You mentioned you choose a pattern based on your upper bust measurement. I'd like to ask: what are you comparing your upper bust measurement to? For example, if the pattern's Full Bust measurement is equal to my upper bust measurement, is that the pattern size to choose. Or, if the pattern's Upper Bust measurement is equal to mine, is that the pattern size I choose. I hope you can clear up my confusion.
Hi Diane! Not many pattern companies give high bust measurements but if they do, use the nearest to your high bust measurement, however you may still need to do a FBA. For instance if high bust is listed as 40” and full bust is listed for that upper bust size as 42” and you are 45” you will still need to do a 3” bust adjustment. Choose full bust measurement nearest to your own upper bust measurement on a commercial pattern and add a FBA. I hope this helps. If not come back and I will try again. X

34” and you need to do a 1 1/2” bust adjustment, which will make 3” altogether. You are choosing the full bust size but using it as your high bust. Hope this helps? If not I will try again. X

Her patterns are drafted for B cups I am high bust 35” and full bust 37”. And her patterns has numbers for bust 34” 36” 38” so on. So even if i try to find my upper bust which is 35” is not in the list.
Sorry for delay, I was teaching a class tonight. Can I ask which Tilly and buttons pattern you are making and I will check chart and get back to you. You are 35 upper bust and not 34?

You are soo right! I often see peeps wearing a dress or blouse that really doesn’t fit them properly and looks soo uncomfortable. It’s a sad story! X
