- In this video, I explain the process a combat athlete (boxer, kickboxer, mixed martial artists, etc) undergoes in order to lose weight for a fight. I break it down into two phases, WEIGHT LOSS PHASE & WEIGHT CUT PHASE. Each phase has its own strategies in order to shed the last few pounds before weight in. I give a 200 pounds fighter example at the end of the video who follows this protocol.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a registered dietitian or a licensed medical professional so what I say in this video is not advice, this is only for informational and entertaining purposes. Consult with a healthcare professional or sports performance professional before undergoing any of the strategies described in this video.
WEIGHT LOSS PHASE
In a typical 8 week training camp the fighter will aim to lose 1% of their body weight per week. I give an example of a 200 pound fighter. 1% weight loss per week estimates to 2 pounds lost weekly. WEIGHT LOSS IS NOT LINEAR. This is a hypothetical situation some weeks a fighter may lose more or less than 1% but the trend is to average 1% weekly. The boxer should continue to do some sort of resistance training, maintain a moderate calorie deficit, and consume adequate protein. Adequate protein would be anywhere from 0.8-1g per pound of bodyweight or 1.6-2.2g per kilogram of body weight.
WEIGHT CUT PHASE
This phase is the last week, usually fight week of a fighters training camp. This is where mostly water is lost in order to make the contracted fight weight. In this video, I give a 200 pound fighter example where he loses 11 pounds in the final week utilizing some strategies. The strategies used are the following:
1) Glycogen Depletion
2) Limit Sodium Intake
3) Reduce Fiber Intake
4) Water load
5) Passive/Active Sweating

Glad it was helpful! 🥊
Good stuff champ
Thank you! 🥊
Very helpful video! I’ve been trying to lose weight. Joined my boxing gym last September and went from 264 to 222. I noticed I had lost weight but didn’t see much definition. I think my calorie deficit was severe. I bumped back up to 241😅 but the goal is 165. Awesome video! Keep it up!
Yup could be the deficit was too big and you did lose fat but also muscle tagged along! So that may be why you saw the lack of definition. Incorpore a strength training routine as well!
you've helped me a lot YUYU
Love to hear that!!
@@ElYuyuBoxing I always make weight because of your advice it helps me a lot,
I'm about to fight at my pro debut next week, you help a lot in my career. Keep doing what you doing.

A video on how to gain/ bulk up or move up in class is as a boxer would be really helpful
Noted! Gaining or bulking required energy surplus which mean you need to eat more! But I’ll share some tips on how to eat more without being so full
What do you think about fithers doing keto diet
I’m currently trying to lose weight. I wrestled, did taekwondo, and most recently Muay Thai but stopped about a year ago. I’ve been running and doing body weight exercises everyday. I’m starting to eat more protein and eat healthy but I’m not really counting my calories. I was 257 or so in early May and this morning I weighed 220. I feel like I’ve definitely lost fat but maybe some muscle as well. Should I lift weights instead of body weight workouts and what lifts would help? Thanks in a advance, and I love the content. Makes me want to get back in to martial arts
First off congrats on getting that weight off! How do you feel? Good energy? Body weight exercises are great but overtime it’s hard to overload them unless you do many more reps.
Start incorporating 2 weight lifting sessions per week and choose some compound lifts with a few accessory exercises along with them!
Been feeling pretty good. Got covid a couple days ago but it went away in like a day and a half. Went to Mexico for about two weeks and ran about 8 out of the 12 days. I feel like the altitude really helped my cardio but definitely feeling like I need to do some weight training to lose as little muscle mass as possible
My friend is going to have an amateur boxing match in November
I want to show him this so he can get the upper hand
He’s going to fight some fire fighter
Awesome! He can follow the weight loss strategies doing a massive weight cut for amateur boxing is not a smart idea because the weigh in is the same day.
@@ElYuyuBoxing ohh I didn’t know that 😶
@@ElYuyuBoxingthank god you told me
I would’ve set him up for failure 😢
I don’t think he knew either
