"Don't be afraid to disappoint your parents. That's how you pursue your dreams." Truer words have never been spoken. LOL
its honestly our version of "coming out"
Ahh, I can't.
11:14
great course I'm my father disgrace so I'm in the path of success.
@@bnco good for you
5 Years ago OMG! 雖然Jimmy已經拎咗美國Passport,但作為香港人,好想話 You make us proud! And your jokes are deep. Thank you Fung Bros and Jimmy :)!
He said some real stuff in this! Gotta appreciate the journey
Richie Le yo goofy ass in the comments
that's a heavy statement!
Andrew don't seem to be appreciating
Richie Le cć*
Seriously he’s the bomb and has so much substance
These guys seems so uninterested in what he has to say and he was saying some real shit!
Real chinese dont talk about work during food
But they're literally interviewing him about his work
these two dude more american than an american most american lol
For real, Andrew was pretty disrespectful to his guest.
Haha maybe it's because it's really hitting home
thats so true about him confronting and playing the role with an asian accent. its the perception. with the asian accent usually comes a character thats quiet, shy, weak, subservient. jimmys playing the asian accent with a character that has a backbone, personality, confidence. if all asian characters with accents started with that type of strong personalitied character, then people wouldnt be hesitant to do the accent. changed my opinion on that topic, thanks jimmy
Backbone- YES! what a good descriptor!
Same here! Loved his character in Silicon Valley
Wanted to add... Sixteen candles may be a bit of a creepy movie - a product of it's times - but the Asian dude who went out there and got the girl? A+
(I've only watched half the movie, I couldn't take how awful it was, so if they do some racist shit in the later half, I'm sorry)
You mean like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan in certain movies.
5:22 "to humanize asians speaking with accent..." I am gonna fall in love with him
"she's actually proud of me, unlike my father." mood jimmy mood ♡
when jimmy is telling his story, the brothers' faces like listening a Cantonese lecture LOL
Jimmy is speaking so much sense and very relevant topics - then they’re just there like shut up we need to eat oh god Andrew get some god damn substance seriously!!! Jimmy is fricking awesome!
Seems like most beyond their heads...
The kid has a good head on his shoulder with good insights of the business. wish him lots of success
I respect Jimmy a lot. When others complain he works. When others quit he works. When he gets rejected he works. His tenacity deserves respect.
He hit the nail right on the head with his explanation of accents in film. As an immigrant myself with older siblings and parents who have accents I think it's ridiculous to call accents in film racist.
It's just a matter of subtext and intention in the film.
It's almost always the white liberals who are saying that accents are racists.
Like US actor act with horrible English accent and Scottish accent. Who fking cares~~
I just dont like it when the accent isn't accurate enough
I think it’s ANNOYING when they expect the accents to make us laugh. That’s just lazy. If the accent is legit and so is the dialogue, that can be funny
Jimmy is one of those people who have such a unique story/perspective that people can’t help but just listen intently.
Did anyone else feel some type of way when he shouted out in Chinese that he has a book?!! It is just so emotional and awe-inspiring that he can do that.
supalove - I can definitely sense the early Stephen Chow style of comedy then. Being excited and yelling in the streets while the whole world walks by, thinking you must be "qi xin".
supalove : Jimmy O Young is the Asian version of Steve Martin. He has become the face this generation of Asian immigrants in America. They should be proud of how honestly he represents them.
Jimmy o yangs convo is too far above the fung bro’s intelligence level for them to comprehend. 😂
A lot of people are saying this but Jimmy isn't really letting them talk. He's not giving them any pause to participate
LOL
Fung Bros: "You know who else wrote a book... that's Chinese... Sun Tzu..!" ---> Yeah, that sums up the "mind" gap...
@@KunjaBihariKrishna They edited themselves out, watch it again carefully
Yes its edited
"Don't be afraid to disappoint your parents..."
I've been doing that all my life
The wrong way?
This guy has officially become my new role model. Love the fact that he truly knows both worlds and his positive attitude. Heading straight to the bookstore to get a copy of his book, not the electronic version, PAPERBACK!
He recorded the audio book and it is cool to hear him in his own words, literally
Can I just say that Jimmy was out here spitting FACTS
Really like him. It's great to see an Asian person who is successful and bilingual. It's sad to see Asian Americans who can't speak their family's language.
Dude i cant agree more. Im native hk cantonese, gotta keep true to my roots
Yeah that's true. Nice to hear the Cantonese too. At least I could understand what he was saying haha
But if you ever go to Kuala Lumpur and hear the Cantonese there, it isn't always the same as that in HK.
I can’t speak Italian or French or Irish Gaelic.
There needs to be more resources for Canto in US. There isn't enough.
Jimmy is an intellectual. And wow, I feel so proud of myself for understanding almost all of his Cantonese. Toisan-va is my mother-tongue, but Cantonese is kinda close. I'm not around Chinese language much to be fluent.
My mother tongue is Hoiping-va which is super close to Toisan-va. You should totally pick it up again, it’s such an interesting stream of Cantonese
Woo high five to another Toisan speaker!
High five! I actually teach hoiping-va on my other channel, it’s called 香下妹频道 if you’re interested in seeing the difference between the that and Toisan-va ;)
Oh wow my grandparents and mom speak toisan-va
Hoisan ngin here too except I can't speak it. Nobody to talk with this old man lol 😅(70)
I appreciate him as an Asian comedian. It's fun to have relatable things to laugh at. My mom was Asian -Taiwanese, I grew up in Taiwan. I'm mixed, so I had the flip version of his coming to the US.
when Jimmy was telling his childhood story, the bros are like "we just wanna eat something!"
I noticed that, too! I wish they had been paying more attention as he was saying really substantive, interesting things.
This dialogue was incredibly honest and eye opening. Excellent job with this candid and fun interview guys!
Who would have thought that I'd learn more about the Chinese immigrant experience from Jimmy O. Yang than anyone else in my whole life? I've been going from video to video of him and he's just great. And thank you, Fung Bros., for hosting him. I found you by looking for interviews with him, but now I want to look through your whole channel. It's not as easy as you'd think to find honest, informative discussions.
Respect to Jimmy for the real talk.
Too bad the Fung Bro's are incapable of engaging in an intellectual conversation.
Andrew looked like he'd rather be scrolling through his IG feed than listen to some substance
Dave Shipley Agreed.
Soooo true! Just incapable of any substance you carry on with your food court reviews that’s more your scene. Also I feel that Andrew is jealous of his success...just a feeling
I think it’s just because Jimmy is the talker most of the time and his talking is so difficult to cut off.
The guy in blue looks not interested at all into whatsoever his guest is talking.
Jimmy is smarter than Fungs for 100 lvl XD
Jimmy is so well-spoken. I hope he creates an agency just for asian actors in the western world. He'd be a great spokesperson.
"Don't be afraid to disappoint your parents. That's how you pursue your dreams." I believe this isn't just limited to one specific race, this applies to anyone no matter their racial background. We all go through a time where we try to live up to certain expectations that we think matter, but sometimes, as Jimmy said, we need to pursue what really matters to us and try our best with it. Well said, Jimmy O. Yang.
Hey, I used to watch your channel a lot in the past but had stopped watching because of all the cheesiness like upbeat music, everyone stopping and simultaneously saying the name of the dish. I started getting fed up and it felt there was no reason for me to stick around but I clicked on this video and like everything. There is a guy without any pretentiousness talking about growing up, his life and there is no loud music, and there is a food at the same time. I like this type of videos.
I love how food in HongKong is so unique, a lot of the delicious food is based off of Western food, yet still stays in the Chinese food essence
I agree that there’s nothing wrong with a traditional career trajectory. It’s comfortable and practical. I love the representation of this video because we live in a more progressive and ever-so-changing world where you can make a career out of media, comedy, artistry, or a memes account on IG for crying out loud. Let’s continue to set an example and inspire the new wave of generations that a life outside of the norm is possible. Creativity inspires growth, and growth cultivates change. Shout out to y’all for being huge influencers.
Hey, hey, don't try to spread this view so much or you'll be ruining the lives of more and more people...as it stands, the most competitive market is entertainment. It's literally built on competition. Never recommend something as risky as a creative career path. ]
You need to encourage the skilled, not just anyone. Jimmy knew he was skilled. So it wasn't so much a risk as it was calculated.
Jimmy O. Yang, you laid down some pearls of wisdom. This I know as an African American Female, first in my family to Graduate College, [ now my niece and nephews are MBA, DDS, etc ] after 25 years in corporate accounting; I went on to start my own business, was victim of a predator, older and scared of my plight now. You are fortunate you did not waste your youth in 9-5.
Congrats to you. Can you say a positive attitude was your way to success?
I love what Jimmy said “ I would rather disappoint my parents than be disappointed for the rest of your life “ ...well said.
Dear Jimmy 's Dad, you must be very proud of your son. He is talented and an absolutely beautiful well rounded man. Who could ask for more. Jimmy 's Mum you have done an excellent job raising Jimmy. Love to you all xxxxx
Jimmy hit me with a truth bomb about Asians with accents at 4:50
Truuuu. I never thought about it like that as an ABC. Everyone has different perspectives, so we shouldn't be so quick to call something offensive.
Having an accent is one thing but the character he plays in Silicon Valley is a slap in the face to Fobs and Asian Americans in general.
I disagree. At first it kind of came off as stereotypical token Asian, but the more I watched the more I saw that he is more than just there for comedic relief, and my initial reaction was my prejudice towards the Asian accent. His portrayal is fine and he made it his own.
He can totally use a fob accent, nothing wrong with that. What I dont get is why he has to use every negative Asian stereotype for his character? My son gets called Jian Yang in school just because hes Asian.. And the character is an nerdy asian meme that does more harm to the Asian American community then good.
Time for your son to stand up for himself
hes hilarious in everything he does. silicon valley, fresh off the boat, stand up!(and the book is amazing)
he deserves all the success
I can't believe Jimmy can speak Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese so well. This guy is a genius.
I love Jimmy more and more as I see his interviews
The 'yellow panthers' is hella funny
Man, that shit he said about accepting disappointment from your parents for a few years in order to avoid disappointing yourself for your entire life, that shit hits hard. Not even with just parents man. I still think about what my old Asian friends and my Asian uncles and aunts, cousins and siblings would think about me if I dropped everything to pursue music like I always wanted to. Not even to become a mainstream artist. I'd be on cloud nine just making a living off of playing music. I really gotta make that decision while I still have the chance.
Do it.
Jimmy O. Yang was the perfect guest. I have read his book and was amazed how he had more than paid his dues doing stand up comedy. He is obviously very talented based on his movies and tv sitcoms and comedy specials. I would love to see him perform live on stage.
Jimmy O. Yang is one of the few successful Asian comedians in America. If I was his parent, I would be very proud of this son!
Jimmy really spitting straight facts... Great to hear things like that especially as a thriving artist
I loved Jimmy in silicon val, I at times just cried with laughter. I hope he continues with great success
Fung Bros. always put out quality content.
That's a heavy statement.
Meh
First thing he said already cracked me up. “She’s proud of me unlike my dad”
Jimmy is such a likable person-happy to see that he has become so successful!
15:38
Jimmy: I wrote this book!
Lady: Well aren't you clever
“Better to disappoint my parents for a couple years and hopefully they come around when I make it, rather than to disappoint MYSELF for my whole life” 👏🏼 😊
I love this! He’s so funny! I am a CBC (Canadian-born Chinese)...I have friends who immigrated here from China or Hong Kong...& had to get over the culture shock..His stories are hilarious! 👍😂🤣😊 On the more serious side, he has great advice for younger kids having a dream about going into less “attractive” jobs according to their Asian parents. 👍😊
THIS WAS SO INSPIRING!! Jimmy O. Yang, I stan!! this was so much better than Collbert's interview. You rawk Jimmy!!!
I’ve seen a few interviews with jimmy o. Yang and this is by far the best I’ve heard him speak. Good on you jimmy.
No idea he's from HK because his Mandarin is good! That's 3 languages he can pass off as native.
That's not Mandarin he's speaking, That is Cantonese.
Yeah I know, I'm referring to his Mandarin in Silicon Valley. It was well spoken and he didn't have a HK/Cantonese accent.
His parents are Shanghainese. I think that's kind of needed to speak with his parents.
His shanghainese sounds really authentic as well
Nah too much Mandarin in that sentence. Good accent though
Wow I never realized Jimmy has so much grit and gone thru all that! So much wisdom and knowledge in this! Props to him!!!!! 💪🏻💪🏻
Jimmy is bold and honest 🤓👌👍
LOL i found it hilarious how they were trying to break the sandwich but failed doing so
Sandwich made in Chinatown
Andrew was not feeling this interview at all!
i thought it looked like he was actually thinking about what jimmy was saying
Probably cuz he's not used to having real discussions with substance? Seems like they're only capable of talking about food and shoes lol
I blame it on food coma
Andrew is BASIC. He's incapable of processing real concepts.
Andrew ain’t even on Jimmy’s level tho.
We work so hard because we want you guys to see that it's possible for us to make it, too!
A lot of positivism in these words. So many Asians have made it in US, that is already an inroad for others who believe in themselves.
Ah yes but the Fung bros had money from the get go from their parents ....jimmy really started from the bottom
I'm Puerto Rican and I'm proud of all these young men. 🥰🤗
Jimmy mustve talked non stop, cuz Andrew looks bored out of his mind. Dope video tho
wow, jimmy is amazing, awesome knowledge, this guy is really commonsensical, and inspirational. thinking outside the box applies to all circumstances, even in society. go beyond what’s expected if it makes sense. he knew he had something more than just a chance, and roll the dice. i feel the same way about people in general, happiness is not a universal circumstance, that’s why most people end up where their most content, or comfortable, meaning happy. The flip side is that, some are lost in the circumstance, or might be afraid to chase the dream, so his words ring true. if you happy, don’t change it, but if your not, but your afraid to go after the happiness, then don’t be. don’t be afraid to play the piano, instead for the violin, or soccer instead of golf. what ever it is. just make sure you become capable, so you have a chance to succeed and have a back up, because like jimmy and ronnie, if comedy didn’t work out, they had great fall backs, that would still provide a great living. that’s important.
Wow, this Jimmy guy is so cool, I love his outlook on life, so refreshing!. I just watched crazy rich asians last night and now I'm lowkey obsessed with all the actors, it was sucha a great funny film. I'm gonna buy his book.
Great interview. I really enjoyed hearing Jimmy speak Cantonese
In the thumbnail jimmy looks like a Chinese Grandma
I was like "grandma?"
"the chinese are really into suffering" hahaa
This was dope. Nice collab.
I recommend everyone to read his book. It was so good and as an Asian myself it was super relatable. But also it was just plain funny and inspirational. I don’t usually read memoirs but this one was super good I had to admit.
Fung Bro on the right... looking all sad when Jimmy was talking about disappointing his folks. LuL
At 7:30 I was soooo focused on the guy in the right side lol! And damn what they are saying is just so pure and inspiring
Seriously bros you can’t even indulge in a good conversation with the Jimmy o
His views on how he plays Asians with accents is pretty real. I really appreciate his view on that. I think only as someone who came to Western country as a kid that already has experiences growing up in Asia. Take the best of all that you are being given!
Fung bros mentally checked out on Jimmy
Once Jimmy goes deep, they can't keep up. Must've brought back all the history class memories from high school for them.
"Don't be afraid to disappoint your parents' powerful message for all culture.
I actually love Jimmy’s Cantonese which still sounds very authentic after living in the US for years
This guy is so awesome. This video is my intro to Jimmy and I will be looking up more.
Damn why Andrew looking mad not into it? lol
DJ Rob Fr wtf
Right
The same greeting goes in Thailand “ have you eaten” it’s a way to take care of the whole community 😊🙌🏼. My dad immigrated from Thailand 50 years ago and I’m like hmmm 11 ethnicities but in layman’s terms I’m half white American and Half Thai with some Chinese and Shawn mixed in 😊🙌🏼. My children are 14 things but yeah they have my bicultural heritage. I’ve always been proud of it and gone against the grain I love hearing this conversation. It’s about acceptance and unity 🙌🏼🙌🏼😎
lol 14:05 "Excuse me, do you read books?"
Well said, Jimmy, very well said.
9:35 "Work hard, get a good job, and make money. No one has fun working. And then you can have fun with the money you make." That's a very Chinese mentality.
10:43 Disappointing your parents is synonymous with pursuing your dream in many Asian cultures.
11:05 It was better to disappoint my parents for a couple of years and then hopefully they'll come around when I make it, than to disappoint myself with the rest of my life.
Were the bros having a food coma while Jimmy was talking? 😂😂😂
Dude this ranks first for entertainment. Make this trio and resto tour a weekly. I'm in. Superbly entrancing
As a black male I have to say there are only three groups of people on this planet that really appreciate the culinary goodness of spam: Black, Chinese, and Hawaiians.
theylied1776 hahaha true, true, or anyone who has been through the struggle
Filipinos brother, oooh they'll fry up spam good
Filipinos to
portersmokedporter facts
theylied1776 nigga foh, all of us poor folk like spam
I am now a fan of Jimmy O. Yang, I forgot about the breakfast. He was spittin GEMS
You three guys - this was a better interview, more interesting, insightful, and fun, than any of the talkshow stuff he’s been on!
Lot of respect for this guy. Funny as hell and great overall attitude on the world
lady: "英文我哋又唔识睇"
jimmy: "下次写中文啦"
:')
Or someone will translate the book from English into Chinese soon.
a father's pride is the never ending quest for all asian children. unfortunately we bury our parents knowing we did that wrong too.
Wow, Jimmy speaks perfect shanghainese!!
Jimmy, PREACH! Great chat you guys had. Much love and appreciation. #ForTheCulture
Jimmy just kept spitting facts the whole video
I LOVE Fung Bros since way back in the day and I love Jimmy O. To see this collab is way more wicked cool than I can ever ask for! Support! 🎉
Oh man! When Andrew said "You know who else wrote a book? Sun Tzu." I spat my water out fast af XD
‘’She’s actually proud of me, unlike my father’’😂ohh Jimmy, feel a little sorry for you, but did laugh out loud haha (pardon me
I just cant wait for the crazy rich asians movie!!!! Aaaahhhh!!!
I love what he said about asians with accents- we all need to stop the self hate... accept it and elevate your brothers and sisters instead of looking down on them.
I really like Jimmy O. Yang and he's doing really awesome things, HK-er pride! Side note: it's amazing how Jimmy has so fully immersed in American culture that despite coming over at an older age of 13, he has gained an ABC accent in his Cantonese. I came here when I was 11 and I can relate to many of the things he talks about, but I've remained a fob even now... haha
I think it really depends on your surrounding community. I also came over at 13, lived in a mostly white town with very few Asians, and now I sound like a white person.
So much love for Jimmy O. Yang
12:52 lmao Jimmy was going the wrong way and David was unsure how to tell him while he was spitting some wisdom
The moment you said "Andy Lau" lol
After watched this video, I just can’t wait to give a thumbs up and write a comment. I’m an Asian. I’m literally touched by the words Jimmy said. I’m quitting my job while pursuing my dreams, but I haven’t told my parents yet. I can’t agree with Jimmy more
What about Brandon Scott Lee in Dragon? Hollywood got that right.
Jason Scott Lee*
But yeah its a great film. Loved Bruces representation. Producers calling it an American film is what got it made in the first place.
Brandon's Bruce Lee's son 😁
The amount of times the guy on the left raises his hand to say something and then stopped himself and the guy on the right stretching his jaw after chewing truly amuses me xD
