That's hilarious how the character actually clever, but appears dumb on the surface because of how straightforward he is. The chemistry with Erich is the best!
I'm really surprised at how good his mandarin is, considering the actor is actually from Hong Kong. Further impressed by the fact that his accent while speaking English is more akin to the accent of a mainland China mandarin-speaker rather than the stereotypical Cantonese accent that is more prevalent in western media.

TJ Miller's defining role was in this show. They did just fine killing him off (still very easy to tell they had to derail the show to get rid of him) It's hard not to hold it against him some how. this is the best comedy series of all time IMO.
I guess you don't know what a stereotype is? The problem is 99% of Asian characters in Hollywood get portrayed like him. It's like in the 1960s and earlier when African American actors could only get stereotypical acting roles as subservient uncle toms. This type of character may be fine in moderation, but the stereotype gets old when it gets repeated so many times over and over again.
for those who haven't seen the series this entire video showcases how much screen time jian got in 5 seasons. I kid you not. He's the best character in the series and he got only 25 mins of screen time in 5 seasons. Shame

Hollywood is a business and since films with Asian leads or actors make more money, there will be more Asian actors in films in positive roles. Besides these things take time.

Every Asian and Indian guy actor in Hollywood needs to start off paying their dues by embarrassing themselves. Kal Penn (Kumar) talked about all the stereotypical roles he had to audition for early on in his career. Ken Jeong in Hangover also comes to mind. They will get better roles in the future. The other way out of the stereotypical roles is to produce and write your own movies/TV shows, like Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Rich Asians, and Searching, which were all created by Asian writers.
I can tell a lot of people haven't watched Sillicon Valley. Jin Yang is anything but an Asian stereotype. He is in fact a massive douche who keeps fucking over Elrich. Also, all the nerds on the show look pretty much like him. In fact, the main character is the one who is a massive, awkward dork.

I am Asian myself and i honestly don't understand the fuss. Jian-Yang's personality is amazing. He is fearless, not taking Erlich's (or anyone) bullshit, and he has free spirit and does whatever he wants (no matter how crazy or fucked up it is), the difference in cultures, the way he looks, how he speaks English sure are stereotypical but they are just parts of the character (plus they are funny). Where can you find such a badass character, he is perfect for the show!! (kinda like Raj in Big Bang Theory, the accents and all culture stereotypes. Still genius and I like both characters)
