When We Were Young Festival disappointed me

  • I went to the infamous When We Were Young festival this past weekend. While the actual event itself was very functional, I think the festival model is predatory and there are better ways to experience live music.

I'm a few yrs older than you, what some may call an elder Emo. I can tell you that every year older, the less desire you have to be in packed crowds getting price gouged at every turn. The irony is in the name of this one.....When we were young- this would have been a lot more fun. I'd much rather just get really giod tickets to see a legacy band directly or check out a smaller new artist. Of course we will always love these big names but without supporting newer artists, the genre along with different types of "rock" will continue dying. Big festivals tend to only be packed with the same legacy bands who would have headlined 10 or 20 yrs ago.

That's the sad part. I'm pretty confident we're at the point where there never will be any newer rock artists that ever hit it big. Because rock is now clearly being cemented as "legacy music" by the industry, similar to what happened to jazz when rock took over. Whether we like it or not, rock has reached the end of its cultural relevancy. That doesn't mean rock will stop being made or people will stop listening to it, but it means hardly anyone will care about new bands or scenes.
The final nail in the coffin for me is the fact that all the bands from the various rock scenes from the '90s to mid/late 2000s are now being put onto nostalgia festivals by large corporate entities (When We Were Young and the Sick New World festivals in particular). There is no new rock scene to speak of, so the music industry will continually view rock as legacy music marketed to an aging audience.
If there is ever going to be another revival, it sure is running late...

@@trvekvlt7196 I just believe that we have reached a point where scene rap and various metallic trap, cloud rap, etc. (Ghostemane, lil peep type stuff) is the new wave of popular alternative music. Attended the 29th show and loved it, you make valid points throughout the video and I thank you for that. Hopefully if anyone is going next be prepared 1. Bring a camel pack or clear bottle with a clip. 2. Eat prior while they do sell food keep in mind food is pricey ( you can get small snacks in if in pockets ). 3. Look at the map see where everything is though it may not be the same next year. 4. Don't sit please if you know you get tired from standing and don't go to the pit area if you are an easily tired person. 5. Don't bring things you can't carry as mentioned lockers are small and from what I've seen are pretty far especially from main stage. 6. Plan who you want to see and who you're willing to miss as mentioned they gave us set times use it wisely (we decided to stay at the main stage all day. Me and my gf enjoyed it fully even with being hungry and thirsty a good portion of the day we are 34 and 29 if age helps for anything mentioned mentioned.

I think they sorted out the kinks from the prior weekend cause food and drink lines were minimal if you spread out. There were alot of people who would get in line at the closest tents and ignore rows further away. As for getting up close i didnt even bother at the black and pink stages. Just too much work. I saved the pits and crowd surfing for the smaller stages and was able to have my fun there. Panned out pretty well.

While festivals have always been crowded and overpriced, something has changed since before the lockdowns. People. Before, everyone was happy to be where they were. Yea, we always had "those guys" who were idiots doing idiot, annoying things. However now it feels like everyone is trying to make up for lost time, they're going to get their money's worth, and it's all about them. People are no longer patient or kind. I've really noticed it at some german shows/festivals earlier this year where there's been behaviour I've never witnessed pre-pandemic. It's really a shame since live shows are an absolute love of mine.

Yes, standing for 13 hours straight sucked, but I knew what I was in for in that regard. I sacrificed my body to not miss any bands. The drinks were ridiculously overpriced but that was to be expected like any other festival sadly. The food was also overpriced but not quite as bad as the drinks. I knew it was going to be cold at night but jeans and a Jean jacket over a T-shirt was warm enough for me. The jeans were too warm in the afternoon but I rolled them up which helped. Overall the weather was as nice as it possibly could be for Vegas. The bathrooms were clean which was greatly appreciated since I at one point I saw a guy straight puking all over it and it was clean next time I went.

If I didn't do that, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the festival at all. I definitely wouldn't buy tickets in the future. Too many people there like you said. Inkcarceration was 3 days, you can buy the whole weekend which does save you some money, or just one or two days. And I'm bewildered by a line for the pit area. At Inkcarceration there was no line, if you wanted to be up front you did so, tried to get as close as possible. There was thousands of people and not everyone wanted to be up close and in the pit. A lot of people set up camp way back and chilled on whatever blankets they brought and just listened and watched from there. There was no one saying we had to get in line. It works out when you let people be people and not try to meddle in things for money.

I had a freaking blast!! Money well spent in my eyes.. food was the longest line I waited in, maybe 30 minutes for pizza (that was actually good) bathroom lines were like 5 minutes and there was no beer line.. :) I was mind blown that people waited an hour or more for merch that was literally the festival setlist.. BUT I got to see some of my favorite bands from my youth and it was in freaking Vegas!! It did great crazy packed for the main stages at the end of the fest though

Wife and I stood in the GA Pit the whole 12 hours we were there on the railing that divided us from the VIP section and saw everyone we wanted to ❤️ it was amazing with a great view! There were people waiting for hours to get into the pit though but we got there early and staked out claim!

I wish I had a time machine for many reasons, my main reason being that I would take you to Project Revolution, with headliners like Linkin Park, Staind, Snoop Dog, the used (trash, my opinion and the only one that matters to me). 3 days, 3 stages, in an entire park in Texas. $275 a ticket for all 3 days. You could get just a day, I'm hard-core goth punk... even got access to an air conditioned beer tent for the bands, meet snoop. It was amazing. This was 20 yrs ago, oh God...I'm ok. The bands have a lot of say if a venue isn't safe, or fan friendly. But they have to give a crap about more than money, bam next.

I had VIP and it was sooooo worth it! I had a great experience minus the long food lines, I didn't eat until 10 pm lol because of that but I would have much rather seen all the bands I wanted rather then eat.. but yeah the food/drink lines were long. The bathrooms legit cleanest I ever seen and the fest in general honestly and I've been to about 10 different festivals. (Emo/Rock/EDM/Rap)

When the flyer for it first came out on RUclips/tiktok I remember being in awe of the amount of great bands that were going to play but at the same time, I knew I wasn’t going to go bc I was so offended by the name of it lol. Like excuse me, I know I’m almost thirty but who are you calling old??? I was SO annoyed that they decided to call it that. I feel like I’d just be embarrassed showing up there. Like it was a twenty year highschool reunion or something. It’s like whoever put this show together doesn’t understand us at all. ANY other name would have been better. Why not a play off of warped?

My friend and I went and personally we had an absolute blast. Right after the all American rejects we went to the black stage to get a decent spot and we did. We got a pretty damn good spot especially considering how many people eventually showed up. My biggest complaint was that I had no data signal cause of the hot spot Vegas is during the festival. Also there's way better ALT than driving to the festival like Uber. You paid $60 to park I paid $45 for an Uber to get me there and back to the hotel.. and went with my friend so we split the bill so even cheaper.. oh also the locker situation was total bs ngl. Within 15 mins of the gates opening there was no more lockers available. But it was fine to hold our merch throughout the day no biggie. But we meet a lot of people who was supposed to be at the festival but it was closed because of the high winds. Like easily 150 people. They was okay and very high spirited which was cool. My thing for next year they need to improve on is to over prepare. More water, lockers, space, ect. Just more smaller things they didn't do this year. Also yes you at weak when it comes to the cold lol it wasn't that bad like yeah it was a tad chilly but I tossed on a long sleeve shirt I got from the merch stands and I was fine lol. But personally like I said overall my experience was amazing

i agree, there was wayyyy to many people 😅 people couldnt even watch any set not even the screen sometimes (luckily i had 4" platforms which made me 6'5) but it was absurd... wasted over an hour in a merch line just for them to re-release merch online... food lines were insane. you're better off waiting for your favorite band to come to your city

I don't know. I really enjoyed the shows. And i wasn't even there until about three hours in! Yes, tickets were incredibly expensive since by the time my spot was up in the wait list, all that was available were hotel packages. Even then, I felt that the value exceeded or at least matched the price when I was there for the 29th. I got to see the bands I wanted and a few new ones. The food was expensive, but sort of reasonable considering all the other food options on the strip. There were covered places to sit down away from the sun and it was easy enough to "navigate" deeper into the crowds as people left areas for other bands, resulting in an incredibly epic spot for the Trinity of Terror bands. My sister and I arrived sort of early for Paramore, but of course it was packed for Bring Me The Horizon and stayed that way for MCR's closing the show. Even still the view was better than being in a nosebleed section. It was a shame that most of the show that I saw was on the screen in black and white while Gerard was dressed in bright red (an effect used often in black and white movies and shows, especially the Addams Family.) I estimate that where we were in the crowd could have fetched at least a $300 ticket before the fees. It might have been different if I was able to go see the band when I was actually younger before they split up. It's worth considering that at the time the festival was made, MCR had done two shows as a reunion just before the pandemic and had their international tour canceled while being vague about being back together. We, the fans, were never given any assurance that there would ever be anything more than a one-time reunion kick pressured by WB. By the time they hit active status, the tickets were long sold and couldn't be refunded. All in all, it was a great experience. A few things could have been better, but it wouldn't have been very realistic.
