    I have not watched the video yet, but I only have an EV and lives in Sweden. Now it's about -15 C. My experience is that the first few km "costs" a lot of battery, but after that it's not bad at all. If you only drive many short trips you will notice a big difference in distance per charge compared to summer. But on long trips, it's really not bad. Sure I have less range than during the summer, but still far more than I need to drive during one day.

    My 2020 Niro EV has a lot less range lost in the winter than my 2018 Leaf about half as much. Keep the good content coming really enjoy them.

      Thank you very much! If you are holding off on the Niro EV because of what things may not be liked, don't. At this moment I consider the Niro EV to be the best EV in its category, for the price. If you really want to wait to make sure, then hold off for the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV5 that are scheduled for this year. 2021 is going to be a very exciting year for EVs.

    For my first winter in my Niro EV, I've found that adapting my acceleration from stops to be tricky. Even in Eco mode I find myself spinning the front tires. It has so much more torque than my old Prius C. And that's with Hakka R3s on!

    Such an in depth and informative video. I put my reservation for the new Ford Lightning and I live in Canada so I was curious how EV's perform during colder weather's. Thanks for providing us with this video!

      I am glad you liked it and that I could help. Every EV will be affected by cold differently due to battery chemistry, battery heater programming, etc, but this video describes a general guide that should apply to pretty much all EVs that have liquid thermal management and a battery heater for winter; the Lightning should fit that description and looks like it will be quite an amazing truck. The really amazing thing about the Ford Lightning, that we just learnt 2 days ago, is that the range quoted by Ford, of 230 miles and 300 miles, is actually with 1000lbs of payload! This means that an unloaded Lightning will have amazing day-to-day range when unloaded. Time will tell, but it is shaping up to be an awesome choice.

      @@EV-olution Oh yeah I heard about that pretty recently too. Almost 500 miles with no payload excluding the driver is very competitive. The Cybertruck and Rivian are also very appealing trucks but Ford has been in the pickup game for a while so I trust them to keep up their reliability with the F series. I also heard the under carriage is built to withstand almost minus 40 degrees to help protect the battery. It seems that Ford really thought of everything. I believe the transition period will begin soon from ICE to Battery EV's.

    I'm glad to see a new video from you. I live in Washington State (USA) and while my Niro EV hasn't seen snow, I _can_ say I have become stuck in ocean beach sand! Luckily a good Samaritan was available to retrieve me from my new sand castle moat. The reason I mention this is because it was the strangest sensation to lose forward traction in an EV. There was none. Press the pedal and the car doesn't move. Strange. Press it more. Also strange. Open the door and there's sand up to the bottom of the battery. It was an interesting learning experience.

      That is exactly how I felt going up the drive in the gravel, as mentioned in my story in this video. The feeling was like you mention, very strange because not only does nothing happen, but there is no sound, no wheel movement, nothing. Even though I had owned and driven my EV for over 1 year, my brain was listening for the ICE car reaction to the situation. So I really understand what you must have felt 🙂

    Good to hear from you again. Where I live in France we think its a really cold day if we see -2C...and that’s rare. Just coming up to 2 years of ownership here but only 36,000 km on the odo....we were in lockdown for many weeks last year so didn’t do much travelling.

    EcoMode traction control issue. Experienced the same thing on a steep, loose gravel forest access road in BC this past summer, and again this winter trying to get up a snowy incline to a parking lot. THANKS for the explanation and tip about switching to Normal mode.

    It is great to see another video. I want to add the Michelin X snow tire as well, the one I bought back in 2014 were the best I ever had. I still have them in fact. Also I want to provide another perspective on why gasoline cars have worse fuel economy in winter than in summer. because the viscosity and density of cold air is higher than warm air, the aerodynamic drag is much higher in winter, for both gasoline and electric cars. the other factor is that cold, dense air with more oxygen per liter creates more pumping losses than warm air. this pumping loop causes more losses for a gasoline engine than either a diesel, or electric power plant. please keep up this work.

      Actually, if you use the left paddle to stop the car you can press the accelerator pedal to vary the braking force. I do this all of the time.

    I love my Niro EV SX. It's been 3 months that I have it and I love it. The range is more than adequate even in the winter for every day use.
    I am car enthousiast and I work in the business, so for me, cars, big engines and racing is my thing. But i will never go back to gas powered cars.
    I enjoy the convenience of the electric car, the comfort, all the options etc...Like you mention in your video, heat the car with the UVO app is just awesome.
    Anyway, keep up the good work!

    Hi, thanks for all your videos. I have a e-niro EV 2020 French model.
    Haven't you an issue while sticky snow cover the front radar zone ?
    For me the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) stop, which is normal as the radar can't work anymore. But the real issue is that as I can find a way to turn off the ACC, the car is showing error all the time and don't want to turn the standard cruise control on alone. I have to drive by food by hour under the snow...
    My KIA representative say I have to press and hold the round O deactivation symbol of the cruise control for 3 seconds to pass in Standard cruise control mode only.
    I tried the car say "ACC disable" but I same issue, as soon the radar is covered by snow the car say collision avoidance system is of and don't won't to cruise control!
    How do you manage that on the 2019 please? Is there a way to turn off the collision avoidance system ?
    It seems on the future KIA and Hyundai the radar would be removed and all will be manage by the dash camera only.
    About that another small issue you may have talk about in this video is the defrost time on the dash camera in winter... As the only spot wish stay frozen and have to be cleaned by hand is the camera position as the camera itself block the hot air flow to refroze the glass from inside.
    And if not done the camera, so the LKAS Line keep assist and level 2 pilot aren't working.
    Anyway I like love that car and your videos are great and informative for the owner that I'm. The reverse direction LED light, reassured me that I wasn't crazy or in trouble on my car with this default, I haven't improved the light bulb yet on mine as I park it always in a light but it's planned soon before the next long trip.
    For your videos thanks a lot, I just play them at x1.5 or x2 ;). Don't know how to say that more constructively but I wish you make them more dynamic somehow...
    Anyway I slow down sometime for details as the explanation are very, often very detailed, but always useful! Cheers

      The RADAR being blocked by snow is because Kia decided to not include a heating element in the case, which I find annoying because it does happen a few times per winter. There are only two solutions:
      (1) stop when it is safe and brush the snow and ice off of the radar. This is what I do and it makes the warnings turn off as well as restore SCC.
      (2) deactivate the SCC, but this does not make the warnings turn off. Your representative is correct, you have to press and hold the button on the bottom right of the steering, the one just left of the Cancel button. On my car it has an image of the SCC distance setting, not an O. Once you do that SCC is deactivated, but the forward collision warning lights will not turn off. There is no way to make the warnings on the dash go away without cleaning the RADAR in front of the car.
      As for the camera area of the windshield, it does occasionally get some ice on it, but I preheat my car all of the time and there is usually nothing over the camera after 15 minutes of defrost at 24C. Once it is warmed up the wipers remove anything that gets in front of the camera, or I use washer fluid and the wipers take care of it.
      Regarding 1.5x and 2x viewing, that is OK, I am not offended. When I make the videos I try to make them so that I include people of all levels of understanding. I give as much detail as possible and I don't go too fast. This way a non tech person will get it and a person like you can simply speed things up or skip ahead. I know it can be frustrating when you know your stuff (I am that way), but I prefer to make sure I don't leave anyone outside of the subject 🙂😃🙂

      Since the preheat feature is mostly used for regular daily driving purposes the overall impact on range won't affect most people who drive about 50 or 60km per day. Even if they drive 100km per day it won't make a difference. And for the times people will drive long distances the car is usually plugged in to charge it up and the power to preheat will come from the house electricity, but you are absolutely correct, if the car is not plugged in the preheat will use battery power and reduce the overall range.     @e-volutiom Appreciate the contents you're sharing. Learning a lot. I purchased last summer a 2021 Soul EV with rated range of 385km at 80 percent SOC. I noticed now that the charge only goes up to 353km at SOC 80%. It's February temperature is between 3C and 9C most days. Do you notice degradation in rating on your EV?

      The range shown in your car is a best guess that the car makes based on your driving style, the temperature, road conditions, etc. This number will change based on the last month of driving history (if I recall correctly), and with temperatures dropping your battery will be less efficient, therefore your car will show less range and have less range. When the weather warms back up your range will increase. this is normal behaviour for all EVs, with some being affected more than others. Fortunately our cars do pretty well with about a 25% loss in temperatures of about -15C to -20C, as opposed some cars that can lose between 40 and 50% in very cold weather.

      @@EV-olution thanks for your reply. I noticed too that everytime I use and set a destination on my satnav, the range will decrease after the nav system recalculates the distance. I guess the system will consume more energy. It takes about 4km from the range.
      Could you actually test a Soul EV?

      @@rafael2diego thank you very much. I could test the Soul EV, but it is exactly the same tech as in the Niro EV, with all of the same menus and systems. When you use the satnav the car calculates the route and how it will affect the range so you may see less, but you may see more. If there is a lot of highway driving on the route then it will estimate less range since EVs use more power on the highway. I hope this helps and thanks again.

      Thank you very much. I don't have a Frunk because in North America all charging stations have the cable on them and I don't really have a need for more storage. So with the cost of shipping and the exchange rate it becomes very expensive for something that I don't really need.

    Hello Andre; I tried to send you an email re: winter charging, but it kicked back (fyi). My question relates to winter charging at 240 vs 110 volts. I have a 2019 Niro EV, and was wondering if charging at 110v would keep the battery warmer, since the charge time is longer than 240? For me, charging at 110 v would mean the car would be charging almost the whole time it was plugged in. Would be love to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you so much for your video's. They are so informative, given I have the same car as you. Jay

      Hi Jay. Did you use the e-mail address in the About tab of my channel? I don't know why it bounced back because I am receiving e-mails in it as I type this. The current in the 110V charging is very low so the battery does not get very warm, if at all in the winter. If you want to optimize charging in the winter to make sure the battery warms up, using 240V, I would suggest programming a scheduled departure time and set the charging to the schedule. This way the car will wait to a certain time at night to charge in order to be at the set maximum charge by the time you have programmed. I hope this isn't confusing to read, it makes sense in my head... and thanks!

      Thank you very much 😎. In Canada the top trim e-Niro has everything included, including the heat pump. In the cold days of winter my car gets about 300km of mixed driving on a full charge, but I don't have a comparison of the EX base trim that does not include the heat pump because it is very rare as not many people chose the EX, and the person that I know who has one puts it in a garage so the car never gets as cold as mine. Sorry I can't help.

    Yeah, everybody's always concentrating so much on the range on EV's. Many of the range-related things are the same in ICE-cars as you said. Maybe one of the reasons is the cabin heating which comes as a side-effect in unefficient combustion process :)

      I like EVs, but saying that ICE vehicles can't heat the the cabin and gets poor fuel milage in the winter is just false. My daily driver is a BMW diesel with the OEM aux heater, and I can count the number of times I have gotten in a cold car with the fingers on one of my hands. And I've had the car for 11 years. Never mind that I can drive 1000 km nonstop. At - 20c. While pulling a trailer.

      @@grobetog if I had said that ICE cars don't get hot in the winter then your statement would be valid, but I never said that, nor was it implied in any of my statements in my video. If you are referring to my post above about ICE cars being a terrible experience, I was talking about a personal experience I had after owning an EV for a long time and the entire ICE car experience was poor: the noise, vibration, smell, how slow it was to start, to engage the gear select to drive, etc, as compared to an EV. Regarding poor fuel mileage, I never said gas cars get poor fuel mileage. What I said is that a gas car gets less fuel mileage in the winter as compared to summer, similar to an EV losing range in the winter. Something most ICE owners don't consider.

    Thanks a lot for very informative videos! Deep in details, wide range of different ownership aspects are covered. Partly thanks to You, we got more confident and made this ''big EV step'' - we are about to get our new e-niro in a couple of days, excited about that!
    However, for some reasons UVO app is not available in our region at any trim. So I have a question - could You comment, how long car stays preheated, if You scedule for particular time? Does it heat up and switch off or keeps set car saloon temperature for 10-20 minutes?

      I am glad I could help, you are going to love your e-Niro.
      Regarding UVO, what country are you in? UVO should be pretty much everywhere in Europe for the 2020 and newer model e-Niro.
      If you set the schedule in the car, the car needs to be plugged into the charging station for it to heat or cool automatically. If you do this it will get to the temperature required and stop, generally about 15 minutes run time, which is why you are required to set a departure time in the schedule.

    I also had no problems driving in snow, and agree that EVs seem more stable. Haven't encountered the slippery slope stall, but thanks for the tip about ECO vs. Normal mode - hope I remember that if it should happen.

    Ive had my E-niro now for a week in Norway in snowy conditions around -15 degC. And im very satisfied with the performance and range. Have no range anxiety whatsoever, i manage about 380-400km on 80% charge. Love the car

      As an e-Niro owner it's VERY hard to believe you get 380-400 km on 80% in -15 C. Even harder to believe in snowy conditions because the surface affects a lot. The only possible explanation, that I can understand, is that you drive 40 km/h for the whole trip. I'm not sure if that's possible even on that situation because heating is taking 2-5 kW in -15 C (and also because 40 km/h takes 10 hours to drive 400 km) :) But if that's true, lucky you.

      @@Marbellous according to the GOM thats what it says, i mostly keep 60 km/h and drive a 40km drive. Use about 16,8 kWh/100km.
      I see now that i formulated it badly cause i have not driven 400km on one charge

      @Safargris If 16,8 kWh/100km is the number, which is great, GOM should say in 80%: 64 kWh / (16,8 kWh/100 km) * 100 km * 0.8 = 305 km. That's the actual.

    I really like that "cam wipe" product!! I'm going to have to look into it for my Kia Niro. I have the Hakka's too, but I have studded version. Love the Niro EV!! I had the "traction control" issue in my Mitsu Eclipse Convertible...when the tires spun, it would drop the amount of fuel into the engine.. I wind up creeping through an intersection because I couldn't get any gas to the engine!! I figured it out after I got to the other side...two lights later... and yes, it had crappy tires....

      The Camwipe is a must have for any Niro owner. I miss being able to clean the rear camera now that I have my EV6. I did not know that other cars suffered the traction control issue, my previous cars did not have the issue. I really loved my Niro EV and was sad to see it go. Thanks for watching this video.       @@EV-olution Thanks very much. I watched yours and a couple of others which helped my decision last year. It was a toss up between Niro and Kona EV. The deal breaker for me was the Kona buttons for the shift selector and the fact that Kia West here in Coquitlam where I bought it had stock in Aug 2021... I had a push button auto growing up in the 80s... didn't like it much...and the Kona reminded me of it, although it drives wayyyy better!

    Great info! Thank you! But do you think you would still get 300km range in winter if you drive to work 150km, the car sits for 8 hrs and then you heat it up again and drive back home another 150km? All highway driving btw.

      Thanks, I am glad you liked it. If you are driving only highway then you should expect about 250 or 260km of range on a single charge, if driving at 110km/h, or 115km/h. If you have access to a 110V outlet at work, charging 8 hours would help, or even better if you had an L2 charger available, then you would have no issues at all.

    Thank you for confirming that you can use winter tyres on the eNiro, our dealer said that you cannot. We do need them in Scotland but not as much as you do. Do you change the tyres on the same wheels or have wheels for winter. I used steel wheels in winter on my previous car, a Skoda Scout.

    As freezing weather is upon us here in the NYC area I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to the 'Winter Mode' selection in the EV settings. I can't find anything about this in the manual. Do all of the Niro EV's have this selection, the ones that come with the winter package option?? Is there a discernable difference turning with this on in very cold temps? It would be nice if KIA made an effort to explain how and when to use something that's an installed option that you pay for and don't have the foggiest when it should be used. There is nothing to go on.

      The Winter Mode setting is used to keep the battery at warmer temperatures when it gets cold by heating it up with a battery heater(s) warming the anti-freeze fluid that circulates in the battery pack.. Winter Mode is only available on cars with the winter package, so if you don't have the winter package then you won't see Winter Mode in the car menu. If you have Winter Mode then you can leave it turned on all year long as it won't be active in warmer temperatures. With that being said, it should make a difference but I monitor my battery temperature as well as the battery heater temperature in Torque Pro and I have never seen the battery heater bring my battery temperature up in cold weather. This is in my 2019 with early software so it is possible it was adjusted/corrected in newer Niro EVs. Basically it should work well, but Niro EVs are plagued by the coldgate issue on rapid chargers because the battery is not kept very warm by the programming of the car, even with Winter Mode on. I hope this clears things up.

    Your info is excellent, i have a 2021 kia niro i use as a taxi in ireland and after 20 months i am still getting 500 k on full charge, the one problem kia have is the door seals had to be replaced after six months on rear doors and after six weeks one rear door fell apart again ,this is a problem

    Something I've discovered in my e Niro, in poor conditions don't use the left paddle to one pedal drive if you think there's ice. If one wheel is on asphalt and the other is on ice, if you hold the left paddle to regen, the motor can resist so much it stops turning. Due to the differential, the forward energy of the wheel on asphalt is transferred as reverse energy to the wheel on ice, which is just weird whilst it's spinning the wrong way, but I can't imagine how dangerous it could be when the wheel spinning the wrong way gets traction once more!

      @@EV-olution That's probably for the best and something I was aware could cause a problem but habit stepped in as I was going down hill on ice. I generally drive only level 1 with auto regen selected, but I think for icy conditions it's probably best to just go with level 1 and using the brake pedal. As a fellow eNiro/Niro EV driver, what do you think to coasting with no regen/level 0? I find it unnerving that there isn't any input on the vehicle and feel like the vehicle is less under control when coasting so freely, but that's my opinion, maybe too many years driving ICE cars :)

      After having driven with many modes, I now drive in Normal with regen 0 all of the time, and use the paddles when needed. I find it more efficient and easier to drive since I don't have to press the accelerator pedal all of the time to maintain speed because the car coasts effortlessly.

    It’s good to see you back on the scene again. Hope I can supply you a little to your very interesting point about winter driving.
    In addition to cold battery and high amount of oxygen during cold weather is the air resistance for the vehicle. When the air is warm all vehicles burn less fuel/electricity than when the air is cold because of the density of the air.
    The same factor makes longer takeoff and landing distances for airplanes when it’s warm air.
    A fossil car needs the same amount of more energy as the electric car direct to the wheels when cold. The problem is the efficiency of the piston engine that needs four times the needed energy any time.
    For example if an electric car needs 13 kWh/100 km in the summertime it needs 18 kWh/100 km in the winter. A fossil car will for example use 5 Liter/100 km in the summertime and 5,5 Liter/100 km in the winter.
    I would be happy to see an experiment that prove that factor between the Kia Niro EV and a fossil Kia Niro, if possible.
    We know that 1 Liter fossil fuel is about 10 kWh depends on diesel or gas.

    the niro and kona share the same skateboard battery / motors. i have the kona and its great so far - free charging at work helps and will make the range hit (due to using the 5kw heater to keep the cabin warm) less because i can heat it while it charges before i leave work for the day and i can plug it in at home and do the same before work.

      Correct, although the Niro EV uses SKI cells in the battery, whereas the Kona Electric uses LG Chem. I actually have an older video comparing the Niro EV to the Kona Electric 😎.

      As with most EVs it is best to use less regen when in slippery conditions. Ice and regen does not work well with ABS in the Niro EV. I can't speak to other models that are not related technology-wise.

    I’m curious about what the lowest temperature you’ve driven your ev in? Where I live in northern Alberta it goes below -30 a lot and I’d like to know how the batteries handle extreme temperatures.

      The coldest it got last winter was -30C. The nice thing about an electric car is that it does not have to start, you just turn it on and it always powers up. Like any battery, the Niro EV battery is affected by the cold and it reduces range, but the nice thing is that it has Winter Mode, which is a battery heater to compensate for the cold weather. If you are interested in the Niro EV and winter at those temperatures, I would suggest leaving it plugged in, set to 90% max charge capacity, Winter Mode turned on, and problem solved. If you were to drive 100% highway at -30C and 115km/h you should get about 250km, but I doubt that anyone only does 100% highway and that it is always -30C all winter. So if you mix in some city driving, traffic driving, and some days at -15C, then you should get similar mileage as me, around 300km on one charge. Let me know if you have any questions.

      As long as you choose an EV that has proper thermal management of the battery, and a battery heater, then you should have no issues. The new Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 will have more range than the Niro EV and offer the latest technology. You would be hard pressed to find a person who would not get enough range with these new cars.

    Quick question... Can you use the app to start and heat your car while it's plugged in to your home charger or does it need to be unplugged? And if usable when plugged, does the heating drain the range or is it just feeding off the charger and preserving range?

    INCORRECT Information !!!
    ...Just watched this & it was very good overall.
    You mentioned that a gasoline engines ‘fuel/air mixture is ‘enriched’ with fuel when it is started from cold & the reason is because there is more oxygen in cold air. Whilst the statement of more oxygen in cold air is correct, the enrichment of fuel when cold is not for this reason!
    The fuel air ratio for decent ‘combustion’ must still be near correct as possible whether the engine is hot or cold, the actual increase in fuel enrichment during cold starts is actually to do with the ‘Cold engine parts’ that the fuel droplets come into contact with. When atomised gasoline droplets come into contact with very cold surfaces it causes the droplets to condense & amalgamate together. When this happens the droplets are no longer small enough to mix with the air & burn efficiently. To offset this additional fuel is added during this warm up phase to ensure there is enough fuel to still mix with the air to achieve a decent combustion. Most of the unburnt fuel is wasted. The sensors on the engine & in the exhaust monitor this mixture constantly & give the signal to add or remove fuel as required.
    Once warm the engine will be at its most fuel efficient point where the gasoline droplets no longer condense.
    This is why we need gasoline engines to warm up quickly.
    It is also why gasoline engines are ‘Very’ inefficient for short journeys.

En générale une génératrice ne fournit pas une source d'électricité "pure sine wave" mais plutôt de l’électricité avec des haut et des bas, et il est déconseillé de brancher des équipements électroniques, incluant une voiture électrique. Je ne connais pas suffisamment les produits électriques (filtres, génératrices, stockage, etc.) donc je ne peux pas donner une réponse éclairée sur la solution. Je connais le propriétaire d’une entreprise spécialisée en alimentation électrique, incluant génératrices, panneaux photovoltaïques, etc. Donc si vous voulez je peux vous donner leurs coordonnées.

    just got the nokian hakkapeliitta r5 ev..i have not driven them very far and winter has not yet come here so i can`t say if the grip is good or bad but so far i am very impressed with the less noice they make. I opted for the R5 over the hakkapeliitta 10 EV since i do not drive very often on icy roads so having studds is not so needed. I rather have less road noice.

      You made the right choice by not getting studded tires if you rarely drive on ice, which is the only reason to get studded tires. You also made an excellent choice with the R5 EV because it is a fantastic winter tire. The R3 that I had on my Niro EV were amazing in the snow and very quiet. I was going to get the R5 EV for my Kia EV6, but I have chosen another brand to try this time. I will be making the video about my winter wheels and tires on the 27th when they arrive.

    Hakkapeliitta is studded and not available in the UK as they are illegal. But are really good for extreme snow/ice.
    the Yokohama W-drives are good too esp in mid Europe where a full on Nordic tyre isnt needed

      Actually the Hakka R3 that I have are not studded, there are 2 versions, studded and not. This is also the case with others like the R9. The EV 10 seem to have them by default though.

    to be more clear....everything you said about the bylaw for needless idling in Montreal is true BUT....you are allowed to idle if the temperature is below -10C and someone is inside, freezing rain or ice on vehicle and if you find it necessary to heat it up in order to ensure safe driving. great vid......i for one am looking forward to see the Nissan Ariya.....good job.

    I have an older version of Kia eNiro and it doesn't support UVO. This really sucks if you need to be constantly changing the preheating settings from UI (which btw can be done only when power on). This has been my only problem in wintertime (last week -20 to -27). On the contrary to many presuppositions my niro heats up faster than most petrol-powered cars!

      It is a shame that some the 2019 European e-Niro did not have UVO. I still don't understand that decision, or the reason that it happened. One thing you could do to help in your situation is to program a climate schedule for the 7 days of the week, set your max charging level to 80% or 90% and keep you car plugged in every day. This way the car won't get too high of a charge, but the programmed schedule will warm up the car at the set times every day. And since you have 2 schedule options you could set a morning time and an end of day time for all 7 days of the week. Also, you may be interested in the OVMS product since you don't have UVO. I have no experience with it, but I know some European owners of the 2019 e-Niro bought it: www.openvehicles.com/

    I went with X-Ice Snows on my Niro EV. The idea of a lower rolling resistance tire in winter seemed counterintuitive to me.
    With that said, we aren't driving it a lot and we live in BC so don't see a huge amount of snow, what we do is very slushy.
    We also have an AWD CUV so would use that if we were ever REALLY concerned. I plan to get the EV-01 Fast wheels to put my stock rubbers back onto when its time to take the Snows off.

      Thanks! They are prescription glasses, but I had the transition layer added so that I don't need to swap them out in the sun. They get pretty black and transition back to normal within 3 or 4 minutes max. Plus they have blue light filtering, so pretty convenient when using computer screens. I bought them at the Costco optometrist center near my place. 😎

    We need to know how these cars work at -45C, that is the temp here this morning. Is it safe to head out on a 80-100 km trip, is it going to be able to charged with the 110v outlet at work and do the return trip safely? I get a kick out of people claiming -20 is extreme.

      Nobody said -20°C was extreme, -20°C is a basic winter temperature that many experience and they wonder about EV range. And yes an EV will work in -50°C if you need it to. Most modern EVs have active liquid thermal management with battery heaters and unlike a gas car, when you press the ON button, the car is instantly on. They also always start because they don't have ancient technolgy of pistons, crankshafts, camshafts, valves, etc. Could you drive 200km at -45°C? Of course you can if you choose an EV with enough claimed range, especially if you can plug in at work all day. If you choose a Leaf with 240km of claimed summer range then you are asking for trouble, but if you choose a Niro EV, Soul EV (64kW), Kona Electric (64kW), Tesla Model 3, VW ID.4, Mustang Mach-E, etc, etc, etc. then you have enough and get all of the EV benefits, like never visiting a gas station again, always having a full "tank", automatic preheating so a warm car when you leave, no ice to scrape, etc, etc, etc.

Heres a typical situation, a hockey mom gets the kids off to school and heads to work, its -28-30(A very typical winter day here in northern AB), the car sits outside all day long, she drives it home and after supper gets her hockey player ready and heads off to the neighbouring community 80km away for a hockey game. the car sits in that parking lot till game is done and they head home. Will the car do it? Need proof before Id but my wife one.Oh yeah, theres no where allowed to plug the car in at either parking lot.

      @@gabrielback5615 the first thing is to consider that windchill has no effect on inanimate objects. Another thing to consider, even at -30°C is that the car sitting outside in a parking lot only means that it will consume more power to stay warm since it has a battery heater and thermal management. Yes, it will consume power as it heats the battery and reduces the overall available drive range available, but the car will always turn on, there are no parts to start. As for will it do what you are asking, the question is how many kilometers in total is the day you describe? The temperature, weather (snow, slush, etc), and total range needed to be driven are the only factors that matter in your scenario. If you say that the total is 200km, then I don't see why there would be a problem, but the other question is how many times a week are you driving 200km per day? There are some new options coming to market that will have no issue at all with the type of use you are describing, the new Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV5. Both will have a posted range of about 480km. If they are anything like the current Kia and Hyundai products available, they will do far more that that, meaning that a car with more than 500km of range in the summer should give you about 350km of range in the winter. Both of these cars are coming out this year. If you really want to see what an EV can do in extreme situations you can read this older article about the Niro EV, which is no longer the king in its class when you consider the 2 EVs that I mentioned... and the last statement in the article is just around the corner because luxury EVs are now in that class.

    I did notice the same issue with being on ECO vs NORMAL mode. It’s quite frustrating. I’m not too happy with our 2022 NIRO EV.
    Practically brand new Michelin X-ICE 1 season old (brand new last winter) pulled out of the garage to go slightly uphill and it just slid. NORMAL mode helped slightly but I couldn’t leave my neighborhood.. pulled it back into the garage and turned on my FJ cruiser to leave the house.
    I am really hoping it was just cold rubber more than anything else but the entire performance last winter was the worst I’ve experienced from any car I’ve owned. It’s heavy with batteries so I expected good contact but my civic in the past felt unstoppable compared to our NIRO… civic on all seasons 💀
    We’re expecting a dump and -15° this Thursday so I will report back.

      The solution to the issue is to use Normal mode, Regen level 1, and turn off traction control. The EV6 has a snow mode that essentially does this with 1 button.

      @@EV-olution I seen recently they implemented the snow mode on the new Niro as well. Curious as to how much that really helps. I figure it reduces the torque even lower than what Eco mode since thats our problem with EV's. We cannot feather the pedal. Its GO GO GO pure torque full time lol
      I will give regen level 1 a go as well. Traction control I do keep off, although it still wants to cut off power. We'll see how things go tomorrow/this evening if I am on the roads. Thanks mate, love the channel as always! Crazy to think I have been a subscriber for more than a year now already!

      I understand your situation. With new battery technologies, longer range and faster charging, your situation should be covered by new EVs fairly soon. Even now, the Kia EV6 has an EPA range of 310 miles with the large battery, RWD variant. This means that at colder temperatures you would get about 25% to 30% less, depending on how cold, so about 215 miles in the lower end, if rounded down. Next year we should see even longer range EVs hitting the market to be able to fill your needs... hopefully 😎

      That possibly would have helped, I would love to go back and try, but it is about 1000km away. The other thing that never sprung to mind is that I could have deactivated traction control. The button is just left of the steering wheel on the dash, but I was so stuck on the idea that the car should simply go up the hill like any other car that it never dawned on me 🙄😏🤨

    Il m'est arrivé la même chose cet été au chalet d'un ami avec ma Ioniq 2020. Pour moi la solution a été de reculer de 200 pieds et de prendre de l'élan. Malheureusement je ne me rappel plu si la voiture était en mode eco ou std.

    I used to be one of those "skeptic" about EVs during cold weather. I'm discovering that it's no big deal other than the charge port door that I have to occasionally remove snow and ice from that area, but it's not a major inconvenience. I lose about 12 miles from the 42 miles I normally get ( Yes, it's a chevy VOLT gen 1 ). Overall, EV works better in winter. No engine to crank, just push the button and the car activates.

      @@EV-olution My car is parked in the garage, but if I do happen to charge somewhere outside, they can be useful, but that rarely happens. I got the gas engine and the VOLT charges rather slowly, ( 10 miles per hour ), so I rarely use public chargers. It would be more expensive to charge than the amount of gas required for the same distance.

    They should embed solar cells in electric cars' exterior paint, then sunny state drivers would rarely need to use charging stations for their EVs.

      In theory that is a great idea. The issue is the low power output of solar cells versus the overall surface area of the vehicle and number of solar cells required. You would need more cells than the entire surface of the car for it to be practical. Technology in this area is improving and it will probably become a common feature in the future, but right now the cost vs power benefits is too out of balance to make it worth while.       Please provide a link to the study, or test showing the results you claim. I am not aware of any tests where any modern EV (Niro EV, Telsa, Kona Electric, etc.), that include a battery heater and liquid thermal management, to lose more than 40% range, meaning the Niro EV would have about 240km of range left at very low temperatures. An actual test in Northern Québec at -48C had the Niro EV at 208km of range on a full charge. Pretty far from 60km you claim, which is not realistic in any stretch of the imagination.       @@EV-olution yes a business owner in our town bought and tested a Tesla . They also tested a Nissan Leaf ? The Tesla did better but last over 50 percent range . The leaf was horrible for range . For rural people the range would not work . I’d love to get one once the technology gets better but as it is in our climate here it’s not realistic for our needs .

      @@jonurton7826 the Nissan Leaf is very old technology and has no liquid thermal management of the battery and is the worst EV you can buy for very hot or cold environments; I don't even recommend them here, especially because the Leaf is going to be replaced very shortly by a new car with modern EV technology. I do agree though, that very cold weather has a serious impact, even on modern EVs, and a solution needs to be found to allow more range at extreme temperatures. The issue is that situation is more of an exception than a rule when considering the global use case for EVs, so I don't think it will change much any time soon and you will have to live with 200km to 300km of range in very cold winters, depending on the model of car chosen.

      @@EV-olution like I say I’m totally on board for the electric era , I’ve even sourced a Taiga electric snowmobile which is exciting. But as far as cars go , I can go buy a Kia sedan for 20,000 brand new . Much cheaper than electric and 40 mpg plus . I just can see why people aren’t all on board yet . I’d love to be and am really fond of the idea but it’s still needs to be marketed and developed better .

    A big difference is that even with preheating your hood of the car with still have snow accumulation when you come out of the house. You will need to brush the snow off for safety. The electric engine does not produce heat like an ice vehicle.

      Yes, that is correct, but my comment is more regarding ice accumulation than snow. There isn't much anyone can do when there is 30cm of snow on any car other than have a garage or a car port.

      For those who do not own a house there are currently obstacles to installing chargers, like in appartment complexes, or condos, or places where people don't have a private parking space. It is a big problem and it needs to be fixed, but right now there are many municipalities that are changing their laws to allow charging station installations in certain places where it was not possible, as well as to force all new constructions to have infrastructure for charging stations in multiplex, as well as public buildings. There are also companies that are developping new technology to install charging stations in lamp posts so people who park in the street can charge while at home. Just like when gas cars were invented and there were no gas stations anywhere, it took time to develope solutions, but it got done; just like EV charging infrastructure will get done and solve the issue of charging in multiplex buildings, condos, and appartment buildings with no private parking. Change is not easy, complaining is, but complaining does not solve problems, developping new ideas and trying to fix the issues solves problems.

    Très intéressant. Effectivement, le fuel range l'hiver est la grosse peur.. basée sur des vieilles réalités. C'est intéressant de voir comment les VE actuels se comportent face à cette réalité.
    J'aimerais savoir si l'impact d'un hiver québécois peut, sur le long terme, avoir un effet négatif sur la batterie.

Pour vous rassurer, la température froide ne devraient pas avoir un vrai impact sur les batteries de façon long terme car la vrai menace pour la dégradation de la batterie est la chaleur. De plus, la batterie est protégée par la chauffe batterie (Winter Mode) lorsque la température tombe. Je n'ai pas de craintes pour ces raisons.

      @@jpp59 the Thingyverse version is not very good, especially when compared to the Camwipe from Eldar. I know it costs more, but he has done R&D to ensure that it fits, works well, and stands up to cold, hot and UV rays. Plus he has done a ton of research on the brushes he uses.
