  • Knowing things like your state of charge when you’re charging is something I took for granted with my old Nissan LEAF so I struggled with my Kia e-Niro First Edition a bit in this respect. Along comes OVMS: a small black box that plugs into my e-Niro (and many other cars) and, using the free app, gives me loads of stats like state of charge, whether a charge has failed, 12v battery charge and much more.
    This is the guide to installing, setting-up, fitting and using the app. I’ve split it into parts so feel free to skip my waffle and get tpo at the beginning by clicking the links below:

    I use OVMS since December 2019. I bought it, because i wanted to heat and cool the E-Niro in Winter or Sommer without a plug-in. But how does it work? On the E-Niro and the Kona you can switch to "Camping mode". A nice thing but you cannot lock the door from outside when it's on! With OVMS you can! Switch to camping mode, set the temperature, turn off automatic functions like light and wipers(light switches on in dark and the wipers start there work when it's raining while you park your car.... 😂😉... ) leave the car and lock it with the app! Done! When you be back, your car receives you in the pre-ordered conditions! You can use all functions like preheated/cooled seats too! In camping mode the car uses the high voltage battery without draining the 12V battery! My experience in the wintertime with around 0 degrees is a loose of 2 Percent/hour capacity of the high voltage battery energylevel. You can heat/cool your E-Niro or Kona for 5 hours and loose only 10% of your capacity. I love this function and use it for the time in winter, when I go for shopping or eat in a restaurant and so on... The only thing you should do is: take the car keys with you. If there is an error with the app(no connection, no more power in your mobile accu,...) it helps to open the door with the analogous key. The radio key does not work will you use OVMS to lock your car! So have fun and sorry, if my English grammar is not always top😉.. And notice: you use the OVMS always on your own risk! Make sure you don't hurt someone or damage your car and lose your warranty while operating the OVMS!

    Excellent video Andrew - clear, non-nerdy and not full of impenetrable jargon. Well done. Presumably, OVMS will be to a large extent made redundant by the inclusion of the app in the MY20 e-Niros which will be arriving very soon. Time will tell how good the Kia app is, and whether OVMS can still add anything of course.

    Hi Andrew, I really love your videos, this one is really good. Just one thing you forgot to mention:
    on your video you setup almost everything with your smartphone, so you start with the wifi configuration, however, at some point you seem to be using your home wifi, but there is no mention of that anywere in the video ( unless I missed it). it seems the module has actually 2 Wifi SSIDs,: the car one, and the one attached to your home wifi. Unless you are good with networks is a bit tricky to find the IP address your router has given to the OVMS module!. Also found out that modem would not register with hologram, so I had to log into the device WebUI and tell it to reboot. that worked like a charm!
    Thanks

    Just to clarify something that perhaps wasn’t clear on the video: OVMS will update your state of charge when the car is switched on *and* when charging. That means your app should always display an accurate state of charge.

A port can be added with a custom-made wiring harness which taps into the CAN bus in the rear console and pinout to a ODB2 connector to which a Bluetooth dongle can then be connected to use Scan My Tesla. Hello Andrew. Just in case you may have missed it, the eNiro has a 12V battery tender option in the menu on the dash, under Other. With that setting activated your 12V should never drain.

    • @marcoversteeg2705
      @marcoversteeg2705 4 года назад +1

      The 12V battery tender option seems to only charge the 12V battery after specific times and does not look at the actual voltage of the 12V battery.
      It also charges only 20 minutes and stops after 10 times charging.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution 4 года назад

      @@marcoversteeg2705 I am not sure exactly how it works, but in my Niro EV I have a module to monitor stats and my 12V, after 20,000km and 9 months of use, is always between 70% and 90% state of charge. I have an OBD2 adapter always plugged in and have never had an issue, even for the last couple of months with temperatures below -20C.

    • @marcoversteeg2705
      @marcoversteeg2705 4 года назад +1

      @@EV-olution I don't either how it works, but i think the option is to compensate the self-discharge of the 12V lead battery.
      The charger of my NIRO EV is not very fast.
      I'm using OVMS to monitor the stats. After 1 hour charging i noticed that the soc of the 12V battery only increased 1% from 70% to 71%.
      With a external charger it goes a lot faster.
      Maybe the best methode to keep a high 12V soc is to charge your car for a long periode as possible.
      In my car i have the CMF45L-DIN 12V battery. I think its just a normal lead accid battery and may only be discharged 20% to prolong life!
      When i have to exchange this battery i will choose for an better battery like AGM.

    Battery temp is one of the most important values, at least in winter when doing long trips and dc charging. Under 21 deg c. You will not get full speed dc charging. To get the full 200amps you will need to get the batt temp above 21 degrees celcius.

      @kiae-nirodiaries1279 4 года назад

      That explains why I was getting between 41 and 44 Kw on 50kW DC rapids in the summer and only 23-26 in the winter. In France just before Christmas I used an Ionity charger which should have used the theoretical maximum of the car, it charged at 53 kW which was OK but other e-Niro drivers in the UK have said 77 kW was the max they had seen.

    • @patrickfavier4310
      @patrickfavier4310 4 года назад

      @@kiae-nirodiaries1279 yeah.. absolutely. It is possible to get 76 or 77 in winter on high power charger, but it will likely be on the second charge stop on a long trip. If it is a shorter trip, say one chargestop you could do a small extra stop from maybe 40 to 50%SoC to heat up the battery, then drive further down to 10% and hopefully you get max amps. Anyway, if you want to know your battery temp without OVMS, you can install a odb2 dongle with bleutooth (find it on amazon or similar for arround 20€) and plug it in the cars odb2 port. Download the app EVnotify, and select e-niro, and sync your phone with the dongle. This setup is also able to sync the cars data live with ABRP app. (SoC, consumption etc.)

      @@patrickfavier4310 Thanks for the tip Patrick. The OVMS looks like a lot of messing about and I certainly don’t want cables trailing all over the place in the footwell. The only time I used Ionity was in early December on my way back from the UK. I made a video of my UK trip in Kia e-NIro Diaries. I was happy with the charging speed as I had been driving in bad weather from the ferry and had covered over 300 km and needed a break. I only use public charging on the rare occasions but it will be interesting to see the effect of temperature on charging speed.

    On the left hand drive KIA NIRO EV the OBD2 port is exposed on the bottom of the dash left of the steering wheel. I use a Bluetooth OBD2 transmitter and the Soul EV Spy Android App. In Canada we have Kia's UVO which sends commands and gets status reports but it takes about 30 seconds to communicate with the car. OVMS looks to be a nice hardware solution.

    BTW would still be a big help in my MG ZS EV as it doesnt have a proper % SOC gauge anyway (only when charging) ....pity the MG isnt on the suitable cars list :(

    • @GlynHudson

      The state of charge (Soc) is updated whenever the car is switched on or charging. The app will display the last known SoC, the SoC won't change when the car is switched off therefore the SoC value shown on the app is always correct, there is no need to update the SoC if it's not changed. Very interesting system indeed OVMS. But I don't understand what is the added value of using it unless I am missing something. Here in Canada for the Niro EV and Kona EV, we already have an app to check state of charge, location of the car, preheat, lock or unlock. So why would someone have OVMS then? Don't you have the same app? I see that you present the power of the system, it can do this and that on the surface, but for you exactly what do you use it for? Like I said it looks like all of this is built-in with my Kona EV with the Bluelink app and I wonder why someone should pay for something already there, unless it can do more and I don't see it in your video, what is the precise benefit for you that Bluelink can't do? There is something I am missing here...

      In some territories (UK in my case) the Niro and Kona don’t have apps so it’s perfect in that case. I agree that for anyone who has the app (as we will for the 2020 model year - finally!) then OVMS may not make much sense.

    Looks quite useful! However, I sure hope they have streamlined the whole process since this video was made because that is ridiculously convoluted to get it up and running! @@MrEV Currently I'm looking into all kinds of options: My 2016 Kia Soul EV+ has the 8" head unit with navigation. It works, but sometimes it is veeeeeeery slow to boot or show the rear view camera when put into reverse, especially when the vehicle has just been started. If there was a way to simply speed up the unit I would be perfectly happy, but I don't see that happening.* So, I've been thinking of installing an aftermarket Android radio, along with Torque Pro or DashCommand or RealDash to monitor Soul EV specific things. But even with that I would lose some functionality (I think), like being able to set or change the timed charging schedule (80%/100%, what days, etc) and other things.
      Any ideas?
      * Sadly, I don't think newer/faster Kia or Hyundai head units can be swapped in 1:1.

      That DB9 connector dates back to the early days of the project. It carries power, three CAN buses, and K-Line, in a standardised (for OVMS and some others at least) pinout. We could have used OBDII, but that is a very clunky connector and only supports standard pins for 1 CAN bus. We have adaptor cables available for the cars we work with, and the DB9 connector itself can be bought for pennies if you want to make one yourself.

      If the data is available on the CAN bus, OVMS can read it. However, most cars have GPS just used internally by the navigation units and don't transmit it on the vehicle bus (or if they do, the messages haven't been discovered yet). By contrast, Tesla cars with their proprietary navigation, have GPS as a central function of the car and the messages are readable on the bus.
