  • How do you decide when to rate a movie 5 stars? Here are my 3 criteria that all 5-star movies must have. If a film does not have each of these three things, I do not give it a 5/5. But what about you? How do you judge for yourself?

I agree, those are mine as well... a movie doesn't necessarily have to be a 5/5 on all 3... it could be like a 4/5 for technical aspects but like a 7/5 for enjoyment and rewatch value which brings it up but the average of the 3 needs to be 5/5 to get the title of "perfection" for me

    I agree on this statement!
Here are films I have given 5 stars!!
    Rocky
    Frankenstein
    Casino Royale
    Master and commander
    The Thing
    Psycho
    The Terminator
Mostly because of rewatchability and characters.
I think a masterpiece has to transcend on some level lol!
    Great video!

Wonderfully put, Bryan. As someone who is new to reviewing movies just for my own enjoyment (i.e. Letterboxd) I found it hard to figured out how to rate moves that I consider my favorites of all time versus movies that I recognize are brilliant but I also don't enjoy (I completely agree with your assessment of Poor Things). I've never worked in theatre/film production so that part of the review is a crapshoot, so my enjoyment of the film gets more weight on the rating.

I agree with the first 2, but i disagree with rewatchability. There are some movies that you can only watch once and are 5 stars. For example, 'grave of the fireflies', 'schindler's list', 'the green mile'

None of them are a 5 for me. But I do give Schindler a 4.5. And while that film isn't necessarily a "bang it on any time" kind of film it is one I do forsee myself wanting to watch again at some point.

Another thing to add as well is that two can balance the other one out depending on just how high they are. Like, let's face it, the filmmaking and the character stuff in Schindler is more like a 6/5. So rewatchability only needs to be a 4 really.

Wanting to rewatch it is top for me, visually fabulous and I have to love or respect the characters, has to have a pleasing ending. If I don’t like the characters, I don’t like the film, irrespective of its technical brilliance. If the film is depressing, that’s a no from me. The Matrix is a good example of this for me.
