writing a feature film at age of 15 , completed 90% of the story, just wanna thank ryan and film riot family for everything they have teached me🙏❤
As someone who used to work at a hospital and now works doing VFX, reading "Building a Treatment to Pitch your Film" sounds very weird
How so? Does it not usually work that way?
Do you have to be in a production company first or what?
@@Writingstories Because after 6 years of medical school treatment to me sounds like medication xD
@@MR3DDev😂😂😂 You may never get over that
Love these more pre production centric videos! I'd love to see a mock pitch process from you. Everything from acquiring the pitch meeting, however you see that commonly take place, to preparing and performing it. I feel like so often these things get talked about but never exemplified in any tangible way.
Or even a real one that he records, and maybe releases whenever is the right time. That’d be amazing.
yes this please
I bet it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience
The analogies in this episode 🔥🔥🔥 Great tips!
Thanks! :)
We were just working on this! Such good timing! 😎
Once again, I start researching a process and you guys make a video about it. I love it.
While I am not a writer nor a very good storyteller, I have ha a couple of inspirations that I tried to flesh out but got stuck and abandoned them.
This gives me ideas on what to do to possibly breathe some life back into the concepts and possibly come up with at least a frame work or outline for stories to be wrapped around.
That's amazing to hear!
Come a long way along with you guys. You've been so helpful all the way along.
Wow... You are the best filmmaker I know. My short film is coming up soon and the best part of the film is that; the film is a compilation of Filmriot tutorials. I believe one day I'll sit under your teaching in a class.
There Comes a Knocking needs to be a feature film!
Facts
You all helped push my interest and drive to get into film! Just wanted to say thanks and let you know how much you all are appreciated.
I found this thoughtful, interesting and helpful. It's not only about honing the story, but honing the process. Thank you for keeping on.
I've been away from this channel for quite a while as I've not done much film experimentation, and the scifi element isn't necessarily in my wheelhouse. But this episode brought me back. I'm in a position where I'm getting projects ready to break into the industry with and I want as much information to help on the way as possible.
I have been shooting mainly music videos and now I'm planning to dive deep in to my first short film. Thank you guys for all these pearls of wisdom! Your content is pure fire. Greetings from Finland 🎥😎
Usually I start with Plot, then Structure, then Characters, then Theme.
Great job here. I learned more in this 11+ minutes than I have studying 30-60 minute courses that never really produce the final result. They want good material, but they keep everything to get there secret. Kudos Film Riot - good job ! :)
Woah Never been so early on a film riot episode
Me too
Same
Perfect filmmaking channel!🙏🏻
Great video! Love the Jurassic park stuff in the background
I've finally found out why I keep getting frustrated with film while im in high school. I think too big. I'm not working within my means. My scripts require too many locations, too much equipment, and too many scenes. My newest script to get into college has 3 locations, 1 actor, and there's no speaking. It's doable. Think small when you're starting out and you'll be less frustrated.
Some of the best advice I got from a fellow director was - if all your concepts are big, think about what the small contained idea is inside of that world. Instead of Making Independence Day, Make Signs.
BALLiSTIC was 3 years ago?!! My word, how time flies… Am gonna go cry in a corner now.
Thanks so much for all these lessons and advice, these not only inspire me but also motivate me sooo great i get the zeal to want to move forward to my dream. GOD bless
Oh snaps Film Riot still doing their thing. I use to watch every video (back when I thought I could make the 3 movie ideas I wanted to make). I thought they would have left RUclips long ago. I should subscribe again xD
Great information. Miss the comedy and humor that make Film Riot
Really, really flipping helpful Ryan, thanks. 👍
Man, I freakin love film riot
I would love to see a video about pitch packets. It would be really helpful to see what goes into them to help bring people onto a project.
Thanks for the info.
Great tips 💪
i'am mark from phillipines sir. i' am one of ur fan sir Ryan thats why now im starting a filmming vfx cutting scene music score color grading etc ileard ur video and i hope someday ur old stuff and equipment will be donate to my production its a honor to learn techique of ur video more power sir Ryan gobless
All this great information and the thing that sticks out most to me is that the third chapter in the list of timestamps for the video is labelled "The Conecpt" instead of "The Concept". :)
MAKING MOOOVIESS
Just in time !
Quality episode!
Those boards! 🔥
Thanks!
Was just starting this at film school!
🔥🔥🔥🔥RIOTER IN THE BUILDING🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great 😊
I always get a specific scene along with my initial concept and build the story around that
Found a film riot episode under 1k views. Wow, i feel special.
“A pitch that went great! “ do I smell a feature? Please please I need a feature film from you Ryan!
Working on it. But I don't think that specific one will get green lit.
Please do more vfx tutorials, specially about energy powers like spells or energy balls, or even about some takes of the trailer of infinity pack. Big hug! Love your channel, helps me a lot! ❤️💪
Alex Garland is my favorite screenwriter!!
greate work >>watching u from iraq
When can we expect more DIY videos from film riot?
hey film riot grew video!!!
Love these dives into your process--thank you for sharing it! A question, have you ever done a film from a story? (short story or part of a novel). Do you have any advice for how to translate the written form into a visual medium?
There's a good book by Linda Seger about this. It's called The Art of Adaptation :)
@@adriana4animals oooh, thank you!!!! 👍 👍 👍 👍
Love from India ❤️
I have been wanting to upgrade my sound quality without purchasing several microphones or a microphone that is extremely expensive. I have heard good reviews of the Rode VideoMic Pro+ but I have also heard that it doesn't work great from a distance. I know that microphones always sound better closer to the subject, but is there any microphone that sounds good and can be used from a distance that is in the $300-$500 price range?
Are you guys having the Rodereel for this year as well?
Goddamn legend you are 👉💯
hi Ryan great video just wanna ask a question:
is it more common for people to co-write or co-direct movies?
Amazing, amazing, amazing. Ryan's tips assist in stage work too. Wham
Just what I needed. Thank you Ryan and ...whats that other guys name.. you know who i mean. That brother guy. Well...him too anyway
Making sure the cat is ok. I agree, the structure works.
You should make the turn to stone effect from Agents of Shield!
Big thanks. Question, do you have a feature film officially in the works? would love to see you direct
There are a few things in the works but nothing green lit or that I can talk about yet. But fingers crossed. The industry is a tough one, so we'll see.
Please do a way to pitch or how to get a pitch
I want that overlay at 0:19
The timing is uncanny
All well and good, but Annihilation changed from scripting to filming to final cut so it wasn’t necessarily structured to hit those story points at the beginning… for example, the “interrogation/briefing” wrapper was added late in the day when Garland and his team realised the film didn’t fully work as it stood - the original plan was to start with the expedition into the Shimmer with no explanatory detail at all…
Most definitely. But that's why I always say with these sorts of breakdowns that we are looking at the completed film, not the script, and I'm looking at how and why the film worked for me. This form of breakdown is analyzing why the final story in its presented form flowed the way it did, connected the way it did, etc... And again, all from my subjective experience. Each individual will also have a different subjective connection with the film in questions. Which is why it's important to study film through your own lens as well.
I was watching a making of Avatar video and they kept mentioning a"scriptment", I assume that's a cross between a script and a treatment.

Can you do a tutorial for the blink portal from X-Men ?
Hi Boss, how do you get the confidence, certainty, that your pitch will capture producer's attention? Do you pitch it around with your friends before hand?
I do. I pitch it to as many people that will listen and I trust that I can. But with every pitch, it's always just a matter of being intensely nervous and self conscious, but pushing past it and doing it anyway. You just have to throw all that out and decide "This is a great story that I WILL tell... With or without the people I'm telling it to."
Anyone know how they got the minute markers for the act shifts and story breaks? i.e 1A is 10 minutes, 1B shift is at 12 minutes, 2A Shift should be at 25 minutes etc.
What does the Second Unit do?
The Conecpt ;P
Hi Ryan
Hello.
And Disney's what if advertisement!
Damn I used to watch Film Riot back in 2010 for a couple of years. Thought I'd come check if they were still making videos, haha what on earth happened to all the fun?
We hate fun. We've outlawed it at the studio.
@@filmriot Hah, times are tough. Sorry didn't mean any offence by that comment, the vibe just seemed quite professional and serious in the first video I watched since years ago. Looks like the operation is going super strong! All the best to you all.
Haha. It's all good. :) We balance it out. When it's info we feel should be straight forward we do it like this. But plenty of craziness still in other episodes. :)
"I have manager" ryan😎
Would you say this work for comic book story creation too?
HOW TO CREATE THEME FOR FILM PITCHING
Silent Hills (P.T) spotted!
Next step is pitching to a24 👀
wonder what this "NORTH" project is...
hello my friend 👍🔔
Nice ❤️❤️
how do you screen record for tutorials?
Snagit is solid software and Camtasia is goo too.
@@filmriot is there anything free to screen record?
where is josh?
since when is his intro gone?
"Anihilation" is actually a very intelligent interpretation of H.P. Lovecraft's "The color out of space". (Personally, I think it is FAR better than that "thing", staring Nicholas Cage!) Although, it isn't word for word "Lovecraft", it maintains the spirit & intentions of his writing.
Its funny cos I just put up my projectors for sale.
Not first ;->
I thought this was supposed to be about pitching a treatment. Not about the structure of 6 act story
As the title suggests, it's about building a treatment to pitch. Which is developing out your story. With a massive factor in doing that being structure.
Stock video libraries have got a lot to answer for, man mentions train so we need to see a picture of a train.... I certainly hope your actual movie ideas are better than the editing in these videos.
So glad you liked it so much. And we hear you loud and clear, Film Riot needs more train shots!
Turbulent Displacement

Film Riot you need to reduce the fooling around on videos in the future. It gets annoying and kills the videos sometimes please
I don't believe there were any jokes in this episode... So I'm confused. lol
