You are a breath of fresh air Dave. No complaining, no whining, no jealous rants. Just perfected skills presented in an easy to understand way. Best on youtube .
Hey Dave. I found a suunto button and I put it on my trucker hat snap closure. Got that trick from you thanks, I have a string of ranger beads to but I have to replace some beads now it's been like 10yrs lol
The instruction is always concise, humble, he runs a company that makes a quality product at a fair price, and omg when the costs dropped he LOWERED the prices, passing the savings to his customers and not his wallet! WHO DOES THAT??? Dave C. does. Great video. I watch this as I understand the Major is now an Instructor and someone else has moved on with their life. Good luck to all, I hope the Major kills it for you!
I appreciate the quick video with solid information. All your videos are very helpful. I worked as a Wilderness Guard in Eastern Oregon back in the 70's and spent time in the Idaho backcountry after my time as an Infantry Marine. Your videos and teaching style would've been a great help to me and the people I worked with back then. Great refresher.
Remember no matter where you go , there you are . Stay on course like a good pathfinder. Thanks again Mr. Canterbury for imparting you knowledgeable tips and ticks to keep us on track.
I love these quick videos. I’ve been a big fan of trying to set up my edc to include items I can make use of so I’m glad you included a button compass with The rotating bezel. While perhaps not as useful as a full sized compass it would fit my intention for it and be a passable place for someone fairly new to navigation like myself to start before investing in a higher quality compass.
In Kenneth Roberts book, "Northwest Passage", the Robert Rogers raid on Saint Francis is described. Since the target was on a river, Rogers purposely navigated to a point upstream from the target. He knew that even if he made an error in navigation, that once he hit the river, he knew the target was downstream.
I teach my scouts that a button compass will put them in the neighborhood but a lensatic compass will put them in the front door. The button compass is good as an emergency backup.
Thanks. Most excellent,so clear.... should be much more accurate than my old trusty follow my nose (a person's has 90% of body's iron in lining of their nose I have a big nose ,so truly I seldom got lost, always found my way.~True story~ You make the button compass a best friend to carry on your arm .Thank you.Safety and good health to you and yours.🥾
Thanks for the ideas and how to‘s. I wouldn’t trust these compass on my watchband, the chance of interference with the watch is pretty high.Better you take it of for all readings
It was good info. Dave, stay strong and frosty sir. All of our skills will be tested in the next couple of years. Looking forward to more of your primitive hacks!!! 🙏🌧️🌤️🌨️🌌🌙
Don’t forget with a compass like that you can offset left or right of target to a linear terrain feature like a creek, road, trail etc then turn and follow that to your target.
Nice tricks on the button compass! I have a Suunto Clipper and I really like it. I’m wondering what brand and model watch you use and can you navigate with it?
Thanks for this Dave . I just wondered if a button might react to any surrounding metal more than a bigger compass , especially attached near a watch ?
Question. Lets say I have this compass for my watch. I used to always try and get anolog watches for basic navigation if I had to. But was interested in a digital g shock watch and I would me missing the hands. Would this button compass work and fullfill the same role or do you always recommend having anolog?
Question Dave, if set the compass put it back on watch would metal in watch throw the reading off? Many times you and instructors say kept them away from metal. I realized at one point youu taped it to notebook. But I'm guessing most would use them strapped to watch band. Just wondering. . Thanks for videos!!!
hey Dave when i try to find a topo map source on goggle i just end up in a runaround what's a good source for topo maps? does any county offices have them available?
One thing I appreciate about your channel Dave, no whining/complaining, just content.
Why complain to the folks actually supporting you? Makes no sense to me!

Thank you for explaining things so clearly and as simple as possible.
Excellent presentation. Being able to navigate with a compass and a map is so satisfying!
This is just what I needed to see, having long ago bought a Suunto Clipper that's perfect for the methods you describe.
I love this! Dave, you do such a great job of keeping things fresh and showing people how to use their items.

Thank you for this video . Very useful info for my back up compass.
I've got a compass just like that on my watch band. I appreciate the lessons. Thank you.

As mentioned in my Navigation tools video “Aiming off”
Great stuff! PACE plan!
I've tossed a few button compasses but after this video I'll hang on to a few.
Nice tricks on the button compass! I have a Suunto Clipper and I really like it. I’m wondering what brand and model watch you use and can you navigate with it?
Gracias David por tus videos, aprendo mucho. Saludos desde Argentina
Excellent!
Good talk. Thanks.
Sun makes a mini base plate compass too, the MiniComp II, it's like 2"x1"
Thanks for this Dave . I just wondered if a button might react to any surrounding metal more than a bigger compass , especially attached near a watch ?
Ahh when i asked you about that in PMs i cited the Suunto brand ones. I'm confused now 😂
How about using a button compass in the top of a walking stick. What's your ideas/tips and tricks on using one of them, Dave?
The metal in your watch can throw off the compass. Always take the compass off to ensure an accurate reading.
Thanks Dave
Thank you

Now whether the deviation would be enough to affect your intentional offset is another question
Cool
Why do you refer to it as the 'infamous" button compass? It seems pretty useful to me, considering its small size. Why would people criticize it?
hey Dave when i try to find a topo map source on goggle i just end up in a runaround what's a good source for topo maps? does any county offices have them available?
Make the side of the compass 1 inch or 2 cm. Use it for distance est
Which compass (brand) is this?
That looks exactly like a sun company compass to me.
Button button, who's got the button?
Thanks Dave
