    diet culture really made us think eating normally is a specific lifestyle.

      I know I am a very privileged person to have never been on a diet, but my first thought was, haven't we all tried this at one point or another? Diet culture is so damaging to all of us

    I'm asking this question openly out of pure curiosity because I'd like to understand others:
    Why is 'intuitive eating' treated as "something to give a go" when it feels natural for the human body to stop eating when you already feel full? What are the conflicts that stop people from 'intuitive eating'?
    For me, the concept of intuitive eating is what I thought is the regular way to consume food - as you like but in moderation without making yourself feel sickly. Would like to know how others think though!

      A lot of people, especially those who have restricted in the past often have messy hunger cues, and truly feeling full is difficult. Also a lot of our heads are so full of the idea of “good food” and “bad food” and intuitive eating is kind of about forgetting about that and just eating what your body is asking you for. I’m absolutely no expert at all lol and this probably doesn’t explain a lot but I tried haha

      To add to this conversation if you grew up around a lack of food you can have the habit of clearing your plate no matter when you feel full due to early learning around the scarcity mindset of "famine or feast", also many people grow up with caregivers that equate food with love and so to not eat their food would be seen as an emotional rejection - in an ideal world where food had no moral or emotional implications then intuitive would, of course, be the norm for people with food stability but unfortunately, it's interwoven with a whole load of other issues that can bypass the normal biological functions of the body.

      i felt the same way as you too, but i never really gave it a thought until i heard “intuitive eating” and did more research on it, because i really wanted to find a way to sustainably lose weight and keep it off without restricting and harshly treating my body. i realized how through intuitively eating, your listening to your body and giving it the foods you enjoy while listening to your hunger cues. before i just used to binge eat without listening to my body, and I wouldn’t even realize the effects on my body till much later so that’s how it helped me🥰

    I just eat what I want, I've realised through experience that eating a ton of chocolate makes you sick and now i just eat it when I feel like it. Or if I want "comfort food" I'll just have it. I know that another day I'll be craving vegetables and eat those then

      that is in general what I understand intuitive eating to be. It's the opposite of diet culture, which has overwhelmed our society. It's eating when you're hungry, what you want, and notthinking about it too much.

  • @aellalee4767

    Really interesting to see how "intuitive eating" works for someone who has had issues with diet. I've always eaten when I want and how I want, unless I was out of money then it's just what's in the fridge, no new groceries. I have always insisted that I portion out my own food or ask friends if I can take the rest home because my mom taught me to only eat the amount I want, which included paying attention to when I'm on the way to feeling full while I eat. Other adults tried to control my eating, but my mom made sure they stopped because she knew what she was teaching me worked for me. I so appreciate her efforts to make sure I know how to trust myself and be healthy.

    I'm obvs not a dietitian but I have been practicing intuitive eating for about a year now while/after recovering from OSFED, and relearning, and respecting your hunger and fullness cues is for me, the biggest part of it. It's a habit and a practice but once you get used to noticing 'i'm hungry for x quantity/type of food' followed by 'i'm full even though this is delicious and i /could/ eat more but it would make me uncomfortably full' it's like a puzzle piece gets put in place and it's sooo much easier. Good luck in the future with your eating!!

    I would have liked a deeper explanation of intuitive eating and how it works bc I didn't really understand. And also, you could have explained a bit more which parts of diet culture you had to face during your week because a didn't get that either. It could be because have 0 diet culture in my brain (which I doubt) or that it is soo deeply rooted that I dont understant which parts could bring problems when trying this form of eating

      @@localabsurdist6661 I don't love all vegan cheese because of how processed some are but that's a great point! Also, a lot of vegan cheeses have nutritional yeast which I love but can't eat because of histamine intolerance. I also never really liked cheese or cheese-related dishes much when I did eat cheese so it's always funny to me when I randomly crave a grilled cheese sandwich - something I never used to eat.

    I learned about intuitive eating when I was like 16 I think and I'm so glad I did, because I grew up always being a bit chub, not heavily overweight but definitely not one of the skinny girls and with that came the constant feeling of having to watch what I eat, always trying out the newest diet and, essentially, a really really disordered way of eating and I think reading up about intuitive eating really helped me to wrap my head around the fact that there are no "bad" foods or food that needs to be avoided/cut out. I have to admit, I expected it to be a new form of diet that I could just apply to my life but it truly isn't, it's rather a reality check about what normal and healthy eating really is and how our body naturally knows and tells us what it wants and needs. It was a great start to my jerney of learning to love my very much imperfect body but I don't know how far I would have come without it. What I want to say with that, great video Lucy, really put a smile on my face!

      intuitive eating tends to be what many might consider the "norm" or at least what many consider what our bodies should be doing. eating what whe want when we want. But in society overwhelmed by diet culture, so many people have to make a concious choice not to think about "good "and "bad" foods, and calories, and that sort of thing. That's what the idea of it is. Being purposeful not to care.

    • @cottagebirder
      @cottagebirder 4 года назад +5

      Yeah im the same, i think intuitive eating as a term is for people who struggle with dieting and ED's, but I'm lucky enough to not struggle with that so my default is the equivalent to this

    • @S34U5
      @S34U5 4 года назад +4

      @@cottagebirder I would say that it is for anyone who grew up in diet culture who wants to learn to listen to their body again, but it becomes difficult when you say it's for people recovering from ED's. As was mentioned in the video ,it can work for people in that uneasy relationship with food, but they need a bit more rigidity to help them through recovery. In general.

    A lot of experts say this too, but intuitive eating has to align with your dietary restrictions and it’s mainly about knowing what makes you feel good. Like if what Jack’s roommates cooked wasn’t going to make you feel great afterwards, it was probably great and in alignment with IE to portion control. IE isn’t about just eating whatever you want, it’s also about gentle nutrition, feeling good physically and emotionally, etc

  • @Ykoz2016

    I will say the number one best habit I developed when recovering from a decade of unhealthy thinking and diet culture was to not watch anything when I eat. At least if I’m alone I don’t watch content, I don’t read, I don't listen to podcasts or music, I don’t do anything else. I just eat quietly and focus on/ enjoy my food as my source of entertainment. I use to eat when distracted and afterwards had no real memory of eating and didn’t feel like I ate (felt like I still needed to eat) even if I was full. It messed up all my hunger signals. It also stopped me from really savoring the flavors and tastes, so that I wasn't fully satisfied and still had cravings. So that’s always my first advice to people, like hey, this might be nice if you want to try it. 🤷‍♀️😂❤️

Just please don't buy the audiobook like I did this book is better read as a hard copy. well-made video about a touchy subject. as a 19 yo who has recovered from anorexia, i agree with a lot of the things you've mentioned. sadly, intuitive eating has become a necessary way to normalise a healthy relationship with food, when we should really just eat what we feel without feeling a pressure to name it, but hey, that's diet culture. been in a very good place with food recently but simply eating when i want to, and working hard on not attaching morality to my food choices, especially when they appear unhealthy or not balanced. i choose not to give this a name because i would prefer to break free from categorising my diet and simply eat to fuel the many other things i do in life, but more power to you :)

    My issue with intuitive eating (as in, why I find it difficult) is because here we see Lucy eating fruit, and granola, and curry, and veggies etc. You wanna know what ya girl wants to eat when she is intuitive eating? Pizza. McDonald's. Shawarma. And a list of other completely not so great for you things. My understanding of intuitive eating is to eat what you want, when you want, how much you want - and trust that your body is telling you it wants. But if all I want is cheese, that's got to be a bad idea right? Maybe I don't understand intuitive eating properly 😣
    Edit: something this made me think of is the book In Defense of Food. Something interesting is that the book mentions a study where people in France were asked what the first word was that came to mind when they saw a picture of a chocolate cake, and then a group of Americans were asked the same things. The people from France unanimously answered with the words 'celebrate' and 'celebration' while the Americans unanimously answered 'guilt'. Shocking how diet culture affects us. Our perception is our reality. We get to choose our perception. Just some food for thought. FOOD FOR THOUGHT. Didn't even mean to do that.

      I was worried about that when I first started implementing IE! One of the things that's so freeing about it is that you DO eat the pizza and chocolate and cake - all the things we've been told are 'bad' - and with time, they lose their novelty. Food that's been put on a 'do not touch' pedestal your whole life suddenly isn't a big deal anymore. I definitely found the hardest part about IE is retraining your brain to see all foods as neutral, but with time your hunger cues become much easier to understand and interpret and you crave a bunch of things you thought you'd never eat if given the choice between that and donuts for eg

    • @Amz11_13
      @Amz11_13 4 года назад

      @@hayleywilson6426 ahh this is so good to know! Thank you for sharing! I do think a lot of the time the reason I want things like pizza etc. is because I 'should'nt' and it's a little bit 'cheeky' and maybe I've had a rough day so 'fuck it'. So good to hear that after a bit of time and retraining of the mind you end up seeing food as neutral. This gives me hope!

    I feel like I've been following a Lite TM version, as you put it, of this for a little while now, but I think sometimes I use it as an excuse to eat whatever junk food I like haha. Through xp I've really learned what does and doesn't agree with me, and sometimes actually find myself craving fruit and veg over junk, and have really noticed the difference between hunger and thirst - sounds dumb, but so often I used to just grab a snack when in reality I needed a pint of water, and I wondered why my energy was always so low! It's definitely a process and takes time to really learn what your body does and doesn't want. I really enjoyed how you framed this video, such a healthy attitude, and honest about those 'good/bad' feelings you have around food, I definitely feel those too!

    hey lucy!! i'm gluten-intolerant as well, and i think that they might've put oat milk instead of almond milk in your coffee. oats are often stored and transported w wheat, so i know lots of gluten intolerant people who avoid oats bc they might trigger reactions

    I think I do a mix of this while being calorie conscious. I've recovered from both restrictive and binge eating disorder for a few years so it works best for me to keep an eye on my calories and aim for around 2k a day (but not punish myself for more or less a couple of hundred calories) because otherwise I just spiral to either under or over eating 😅

    I loved your meal ideas. I feel like I do eat healthy meals, despite still labelling foods as good and then feeling guilty about all the things that are not. What are your tips on combatting cravings for sugary foods? For me this is the big one. I have always been obsessive about not eating too much of it and then really start to crave it if I try and replace it. I eat a lot of fruit however I still become really paranoid and guilty about it if I give in to a craving. x

      With intuitive eating the whole deal is when you crave something you eat it! And then over time as you stop restricting certain foods your cravings become more normal

    If anyone is interested in trying to implement intuitive eating but feels like they need some structure to work through I would recommend checking out if any local libraries have 'The intuitive eating workbook' created by the two women in Lucy's first link. :) It really helped me realise the ways dieting was hurting me physically and psychologically: one of the early exercises gets you to list dates of diets and reflect on their long term outcomes and made me realise how much dieting was incrementally messing up my relationship with food. (may not be ideal for those in ED recovery, but sending you lots of hope and strength

    Lucy it was so interesting to hear your thoughts on this topic!! Definitely agree that intuitive eating is the way forward! I’ve been hearing more and more people talk about it in passing and it has made me adopt the principals in my life, in a casual way. But now I’ve felt really inspired to go do some proper research. I’m so glad I’ve come across these concepts at a young age, I’m only 21 and it feels good to listen to my body and respect its cravings, instead of letting them consume me. Watched the video while eating peach and whipped cream ~ proper summer treat 🥰 lots of love to you xxx

    This is a random comment on this video but I keep trying to make curries with coconut milk, and I can't make them without the sauce going slimy? Any cooking tips from anyone to stop this happening? I've tried cooking it hot and quick, and also slow and long and it happens both ways. Also tried different brands of coconut milk too, don't know what else to try! Xxx

    I've never been diagnosed as having an eating disorder, certainly there's no psychological/body image concerns going on, but I would say my eating is disordered lol. I could never do this because my appetite is so small. Always has been but definitely moreso since I got 2 chest infections last year, I have to actively try to keep my calories up in healthy ways. I also hate most veg and am quite cripplingly addicted to sugar so eating "intuitively" basically isn't an option lol I'm already eating most of my daily calories in biscuits and sweets and fruit, it's really bad ...

    Kinda sad that intuitive eating is a concept that's novel to some people. Unless you have an eating disorder, it should just be how everyone eats normally. Instead, I see lifestyle influencers rave about it like it's some kind of revolutionary idea. Says a lot about how society treats people to be honest.
