As an American child living in the UK we visited this holy place and others like it and they left me in awe, and actually asking my parents if "we could attend church more often!" 50 years on, I still have some christian beliefs, and men like Williams can inspire hope in those of us who question whether logic , scientific analysis and modern political systems can coincide with religion that inspires peace, not everlasting war. Well done! .
I am American and Catholic this is such a treat wonderfully presented and beautifully narrated by Lord Williams with such wisdom and ease of perhaps the most important and historically rich building Canterbury is not in England Canterbury is England. ..
What a saintly man. Love him to bits. Was in Oxford, and got to meet him a few times, when he was the 'Arch'. I have a profound respect for this good, good man.
Very powerful documentary I am so blessed to be a part of the working community in this wonderful place. Thanks be to God for Canterbury Cathedral and it's ministry, and for the wisdom and faith of it's Archbishops.
+Rob McKay It's a tribute to the brave fire-watchers who got out on the roof after the bombing, and at great personal risk grabbed the burning incendiaries and tossed them off the roof. They lost the library but they would've lost the entire building without them. Did you see the commemorative plaque on the cathedral floor? The archbishop walked right over it...and BTW, anybody can explore the cathedral, it's one of the places where Google Maps went inside, just use street view)
Thank you Barbara for this update. Interesting about your mention of the fire-watchers. What brave people. Its being years since i last visited St Paul's in London so thank you for pointing out the fact that they climbed up on to the roof to remove as you say the "burning incendiaries. I live in New Zealand. I didn't know about the commemorative plaque on the cathedral floor. Most interesting.
I'm admired at the Archbishop, this is such a well-thought and greatly put together documentary. I learnt a lot from it, despite being an Atheist I wasn't put off by it at all, his questionings and answers are spot on and he is as subjective as you can get. He is such a well-educated peer. I visited this place once in 2012 and I was completely awestruck, it's such a marvellous place and the town is utterly charming. If I ever have a chance to visit England again, I am definitely going back to Canterbury.
Why's he leaving? I'm an atheist, and that man's manner, kindness, and way of speaking is enough to at least make me listen to the gospels. He couldn't be more perfect for the job.
+Butter Pecan Rican Don't be an Atheist.(ALL THE BAD,And no good)That is the worst religion. at least agnostics have the right to change thier minds. And all religion sucks. I believe it was invented by Satan himself to divide Gods people. have sinned at the time it was great fun, but I always believed in our father, because he always was there .I never doubted him, talked to him as I do you. And result is he has saved my life more than thirty times! And provided for me and my family. He is real. Find him yourself , in your heart, THEN join others from a point of authority not un assuredness. God bless honey, He believes in you. Read Gen/John then things will start o fall in place. peace.
+Butter Pecan Rican You feel that way because, like most Atheists I know, you are a naturally good person. You don't need a ancient book for a moral compass. You don't need a God to be moved to tears by human kindness. You don't need religion (Atheism is NOT a religion WtC) to function in society. May LOGIC and REASON rein supreme. P.s I too loved this video.

I also am a Roman Catholic I was soon that's what you mean. the Anglican Church or the Church of England is also Catholic it just doesn't answer to the Pope in Rome. I went to Mass one time with a friend years ago to Episcopalian which is the same thing but in America it didn't seem any different than the churches I went to. so I discovered the history and of course the living history and I find it to be quite nice
Rowan Williams was considered too progressive. His hopes to allow women to be ministers was frowned upon by the more conservative African bishops. He was one of the most progressive religious leaders ever.
You may have read it Peter but it is unlikely you have grasped much if you feel that describing Rowan Williams the way you did was edifying or illuminating in any way. I met Rowan Williams almost a decade before he became Archbishop of Canterbury. It was at a Christian retreat and he was teaching on Matthew 5. He was extremely intelligent, humble, gentle natured and friendly. I felt I was in the presence of a remarkably spiritual person and he made a huge impression on me. I have not the slightest idea why you would describe him as 'dirty'. Maybe you are projecting something about yourself on to him. He's certainly not 'little' in any respect - he is tall and has a remarkable charisma which fills a room. I am unsure what is meant by 'Islam-loving', I tend to spell Islam with a capital 'i' and I am unsure if your rendering is a typo. It is difficult to discern Jesus' attitude to Islam as it did not exist as a belief system when the New Testament was written. Williams wrote a great and short book on 9/11 which is the best reflection I have read on that disaster. He has no truck with extremist fundamentalist Islam, that is certain. Perhaps he recognises a need to live alongside and share space with those of other faiths. I don't know. I am sure he will have engaged with the issue at a deep level. If by 'poof' you mean a gay man, I am sure you are wrong there Peter. He is married with two children. If by the word, you mean he is too supportive of homosexuality, I think you have to recognise that gay rights organisations were very disappointed with him as Archbishop. He tried hard to stop the Anglican Church from fragmenting. Maybe he should condemn homosexuality in the strongest terms. You mention Jesus and your knowledge of the New Testament so maybe you can point to the words of Jesus that he could follow in his views. Jesus wasn't an unthinking 'progressive' but he did take a strong stand on the rich, comfortable and powerful and I believe that Rowan Williams shared that. Every blessing to you, Peter. Let us raise the level of debate on this above abuse, brother. David
Christianity was already in the British Isles... there's a Celtic mission that started in Hibernia (St. Patrick) and reached the Main Island... There were monasteries etc... so there's this Celtic strand of Christianity before the 'official' Roman arrival in Canterbury... jus have a look on books about "Celtic Christianity", I may be wrong, but I think it comes before all of this...
"It can feel like play-acting, dressing up as a saint." Well, you said it, dude! "Would I give up my life? Would I desert my loved ones to make a point, however important?" This man understands nothing. St John of the Cross says that a person should not seek the death of a martyr but the love of a martyr. No one dies the death of a martyr 'to make a point.' Martyrdom is not the desertion of loved ones, it is the ultimate act of self giving, it is union with the Beloved, Christ, who himself died a martyr's death. Did he do it to prove a point? No, he did it out of sacrificial love to redeem the world. The only alternative to martyrdom in some situations is enslavement and enslavement to Satan at that. Jesus told us not to fear those who kill the body but rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28). The blood and self-offering of the martyrs strengthens the Church. This man thinks that he can arrogantly talk down to the saints of the Church and make out that their sacrificial love was an irrational act. I suppose if your only aim in life is to grab all the power and status that you can, it must seem pretty crazy. Avoiding martyrdom in one instance does not mean that it is possible to avoid death permanently. And with death comes judgement. That cannot be avoided. Acts 7 51 ‘You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are for ever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. 52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers. 53 You are the ones that received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it.’ 54 When they heard these things, they became enraged and ground their teeth at Stephen. 55 But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 ‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’ 57 But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. 58 Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ 60 Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he died. 1 Corinthians 13 13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. 9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. Galatians 5 1 For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

Ok , so some dude who works at the cathedral is leaving his post.Thank God! Sooo, it's not the end of the cathedral. I thought they were tearing the cathedral down based on what the title said. This documentary needs a more accurate title. I'm glad they are NOT actually putting an end to the cathedral.. whew! I went to England in 2008 and saw this cathedral. I stayed in the heart of Canterbury for several days. I was awestruck and inspired by the Cathedral and I am relieved they aren't actually ",ending'" it in any real, meaningful manner.
I believe his message was to look within ourself, as he was shown, and brought to realize when placed at the center of this place, a monument of mankinds role in the history that Canterbury represents, to find your true beliefs. (a look in the mirror inscription on the sarcophagus) What a few men or generations of men did or said was but a small part of it. Did that make any sense? Im not as articulate as Rowan, theres a lotta weeds in my mind. An excellent video.
You can use Google Maps Street View to explore most of the inside of Canterbury Cathedral, if there are things you'd like to take a better look at...though it looks like they don't have the "holy-of-holies" part, and of course they didn't get up in the upper levels that are closed to the public. Kind of fun to prowl around...
As the history of Iraq is destroyed by zealots with bulldozers, it sadly reminds me of Canterbury Cathedral. Does Henry VIII still burn in hell ? After his plunder, 1 truth becomes 26,000 truths (denominations). Sad...
James Claude This must be why zealots yearn for and even obsess over a coming Apocalypse. In your logic, only this mass human extermination will actually validate your superstitions. Apocalyptic traditions go back to the Maccabees, Essenes, Sicarii, etc. - it is bred into the zealots' genome.
+CalForester An "apocalypse" is but a brief event, lasting for a short while. Judgement for all is sure - but not all will be "exterminated". Who says that ? It's a rather morbid outlook. Judgement is a hopeful thing, but is definitely not an "obsession" except for those trying to predict when and how it will occur...
Such a shame that they separated from the mother Church of Rome and also a shame that the Church of England is dying and england is being overrun by Muslims.
Did the King's agents give the 26 wagons of treasure to the poor, many of whom would have donated to it over hundreds of years and received charity and social care from the monastery?
Very good point. The Archbishop vastly overstates corruption in the monasteries, somehow even implying that they had it coming. The dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry and Cromwell was a criminal act to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor.
The Catholic church and the Church of England were entirely POLITICAL entities in England. And some English monarchs like James I were religious nuts (he literally wrote the book on witch burning). America was founded in this context - and the religious wars that had just ravaged France and Germany throughout the 16th and 17th centuries leaving millions dead. Official religions are a BAD thing, and are historically anathema to personal liberties and human rights. Unfortunately today, enough right wing politicians and media have repeated the lie so often, that many Americans actually believe we are a "Christian" nation - which of course, we never were. Our constitution PROTECTS us from religion - as it was intended.
Another massive architectural religious monstrosity symbolizing the corruption, power and deceit of organized religion. Or as Monty Python piously intoned... "Let us praise God, O Lord... Ooh, You are so big, So absolutely huge. Gosh, we're all really impressed down here, I can tell You. Forgive us, O Lord, for this, our dreadful toadying, and barefaced flattery. But You are so strong and, well, just so super fantastic! Amen."
Canterbury Cathedral stood at its founding for the faith of Jesus Christ, made incarnate by the Father through the Virgin Mary; Jesus who sacrificed himself for our sins, who died on the cross, descended into Hell and who rose three days later. It is a mark of Rowan's politicisation that he did not mention this at all. Very sad.
Well said. I was thinking exactly the same thing while watching this. As good as is his narration and eloquence of language, amazing that he does not once reference Jesus Christ, the key reason people sacrificed to build and maintain this great Cathedral.
And you betray your animus against plain speaking, reason and reality. Canterbury would be well rid of such as that. You neither understand the Word nor own it. Shame on radical fundamentalists cut off from actual history.
Albert Constantine Read the Bible and read the words of these so-called leaders of the Church. They have betrayed their office with the protesting of women, homosexual "marriage," liberation theology, Gnosticism, universalism, etc. This also obtains for the Roman church, minus the prorating of women, of course.
533, you sound very mad, and judgemental. Live the Golden Rule, and you'll be o.k., and those around you will be able to hear what your saying. But right now, they only hear hate.
I could listen to this man for hours. His voice is like therapy.

Jesus wasn't an unthinking 'progressive' but he did take a strong stand on the rich, comfortable and powerful and I believe that Rowan Williams shared that.
Every blessing to you, Peter. Let us raise the level of debate on this above abuse, brother.

Marcelo Siqueira Gonçalves The British specifically appealed to Rome for their version of Catholicism for many reasons - mostly political.
What is the sense of this fabulous documentary without music and the the commentary of Rowan Williams?

Thank's to Archbishop of Canterbury
Sad...
HappyandAtheist We shall all eventually see - one way or the other.
There is ZERO proof for any of that nonsense and you know it.
All will be revealed in the fullness of time...
Such a shame that they separated from the mother Church of Rome and also a shame that the Church of England is dying and england is being overrun by Muslims.
John Lawn overrun? about 4% of UK is Muslim...
Intellectual property Law is an abomination.
It started as a Catholic church.
Did the King's agents give the 26 wagons of treasure to the poor, many of whom would have donated to it over hundreds of years and received charity and social care from the monastery?
No, it all went into the King's Treasury.
Very good point. The Archbishop vastly overstates corruption in the monasteries, somehow even implying that they had it coming. The dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry and Cromwell was a criminal act to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor.
God--and NOT political-correctness--is what will return to Canterbury Cathedral. "Divide and Conquer" is not God's curriculum
whats the name of the organ song played at about 59:20
The Catholic church and the Church of England were entirely POLITICAL entities in England.
No sound at all? Drat!
That Dutch "theologian" @ min 29 sounds like judas.
Another massive architectural religious monstrosity symbolizing the corruption, power and deceit of organized religion. Or as Monty Python piously intoned...
"Let us praise God, O Lord...
Ooh, You are so big,
So absolutely huge.
Gosh, we're all really impressed down here, I can tell You.
Forgive us, O Lord, for this, our dreadful toadying, and barefaced flattery.
But You are so strong and, well, just so super fantastic!
Amen."
the mother church of the "church of england"!? Saint Thomas Beckett is turning in his grave..
I need it in spanish... Is this ?
Canterbury Cathedral stood at its founding for the faith of Jesus Christ, made incarnate by the Father through the Virgin Mary; Jesus who sacrificed himself for our sins, who died on the cross, descended into Hell and who rose three days later. It is a mark of Rowan's politicisation that he did not mention this at all. Very sad.
Well said. I was thinking exactly the same thing while watching this. As good as is his narration and eloquence of language, amazing that he does not once reference Jesus Christ, the key reason people sacrificed to build and maintain this great Cathedral.
With his quip "the cult of The Word," Williams betrays his animus against God's word.
Lukas Thompson Please rewrite your question. It looks like your spellcheck messed things up.
fuck you. God hates you.
Typical "Christian." Drunk on Jesus Juice at 12 AM, no doubt.

Are Arch Bishops allowed to trim.their eyebrows, or is that against the rules?
533, you sound very mad, and judgemental. Live the Golden Rule, and you'll be o.k., and those around you will be able to hear what your saying. But right now, they only hear hate.
Yorkminster is way cooler
