Yeah, well, I don't know why Julius Caesar is included in this "tyrannical emperors" video, as the view that he was "tyrannical", is certainly not objective, and he definitely was not "emperor"; in fact, the first Emperor of Rome was his adopted son, Octavian Augustus (30 BC-14 AD). As for "tyrannical emperors of Rome", Emperors like Octavian's (own) adopted son (and successor), Tiberius (14-37) would have qualified (at least, Emperors that came from Julia-Claudia Dynasty, the first Roman imperial dynasty). Also, right at the end of this video, a very important detail in Nero's reign (54-68) was left out: beginning in the year 66, fueled by real, and/or imaginary conspiracies, he unleashed a wave of terror on the members of the Senate (as well as other members of the nobility/patricians); this was (partly) the reason that, as soon as they could (in the year 68, shortly before his death/assisted suicide), the Senate declared Nero "enemy of the State".

This would have been a really good documentary Tony Robinson is good but the background noise that is called music was dreadful and ruined it a documentary is supposed to be what it says someone narrating but with that noise a lot of what he said was lost whoever did the background should be sued for spoiling a decent program
I recently read some facts about Caligula: he was actually capable (in the early years) to do important things for the whole empire. New infastructures, new laws. It makes me think that even an half crazy person was able to manage such a vast territory and nowadays we cannot find a valid PM who can at least fix Rome’s roads.
Serious sound editing needed here. It is, as always with Tony Robinson's presentations on history so interesting and well made, but the crazy apparently incessant music is annoying as all hell anyway, but when the sound of the narrator is drowned out totally on some of the most interesting parts of the video by strident and irrelevant music it makes it impossible to watch. Such a shame.
It's a shame but I can't watch this with the sound the way it is. At times I can't hear Tony at all because of the unnecessarily loud music. I'll try another video.
Except that he shouldn't have been included in this "tyrannical emperors" video, as the view that he was "tyrannical", is certainly not objective, and he was definitely not an "emperor"; in fact, the first Emperor of Rome was Octavian Augustus (30 BC-14 AD), Julius Caesar's adopted son.
I remember that my earliest idea of what Caligula was like came from the BBC series I Claudius, but much of history is determined by the winners and I had long changed my mind about him, he was a typical emperor who went against the ruling class. If Cassius and Bruno had beaten and killed Mark Anthony and Octavius then I would imagine Caesar would have been cast as another Tarquin and his literature destroyed.
That's a good point, that we would probably remember Caesar quite differently if the conspirators had won the second civil war. Even so, I think that Shakespeare has influenced how we remember the conspirators - Brutus and Cassius being cast as tragic heroes and probably getting a bit more credit than they deserved. When he wrote his Claudius novels, Robert Graves drew heavily on Suetonius, who drew heavily on the most scurrilous gossip about the Julio-Claudians to make the Antonine emperors look good by comparison. A lot of what we think we know about Caligula comes from Suetonius, and it's always interesting to see the historical evidence from different angles.
Amazing job telling an educational story, dispelling myth while still honoring the heroism. The storytelling, audio and visual effects and content is superb! It's great to see valid history portrayed in such a palatable way.
SORRY!!!! but the sound is a little off... when you overlay the music and some of the sound FX it drowned out the vocals a fair bit... i had to use the subtitles, again SORRY!!
I can not understand why the creators of these kinds of fascinating documentaries find it necessary to play annoying loud music, especially while the commentator is speaking. I could not hear half of what Tony Robinson was saying because the music was much louder than his voice.
I love these stories but the background music is way too LOUD! I can't hear 3/4 of what Tony is saying and that's a shame. Please try to address this issue promptly because I love this show.

I'm here for the information, not a rousing experience. It just makes me not want to watch, to be frank. Tony Robinson and the Timeline series seem to be the worst offenders. In another comment, it says that this is pirated and the music was added or boosted to get around copyright. Blech.
Caesar's enemies were just stuck on stupid. He was so good for Rome. The fools against him were blind and jealous. Even his killers did not prosper in the end.
@@robertgiles9124 No I don't think I am. If you know Roman history you should know they almost all came to a bad end, before Caesar and way after. The people who wen't against him had many reasons. Background music often gets too loud throughout the video. I'm sure it's a great video, but couldn't watch it due to the high background music.
the sound engineers made the backgrounf music louder than the narators voice.
This was an excellent documentary, but I don't know what you've done to the sound balance. Tony is too quiet, and whenever there are background effects - traffic, battle, waves, music etc - Tony goes even quieter. It's like some sound balance algorithm was being misused and screwing it all up.
{:o:O:}
I am sooo interested in this .. the music or sound effects are so over the top I struggle to hear the narrator.. super frustrating.im going to keep trying. Curious, is there a way to adjust settings on my side to balance the sound issue?
No, I think they've used a compressor of some sort that flattens everything and levels it all out. And whenever there are background sounds Tony goes even quieter. Probably done to out fox the copyright detection algorithm. The only way round it is to get the original DVD from BBC Productions.
{:o:O:}
Tony is a joy to listen to and watch.
Yes, but I can’t help but think of my 1st knowledge of Tony Robinson as a comedic actor in Blackadder.
Fell asleep yesterday woke up to this video 2h30min in 😂😂😂😂
Kindly remove the conflicting music. Cannot hear the speaker. Thanks
It destroy all the pleasure in listening to Robinson.
To y’all complaining about the sound quality. Go to timeline on RUclips and listen to the entire series in pure sound quality. The problem with this upload is how the stereo sound was loaded through a digital mono filter. They never work !
The sound engineer needs to face Roman justice.
No matter how far back you go…the frailty of humanity is there. Chasing shadows and quieting elusive voices…but there’s no escaping the confinement of one’s mind full of suspicion…losing the ability to know who is for you…and who is against you. Very nice video…thank you🙂🌺
I'm currently on the bit where Caligula orders the soldiers to collect shells and I can't hear a word from Tony over the waves!
The background music is always drowning out the voice of Tony.
Good heavens!
Great documentary but the background music is too loud and we can barely hear you.
An excellent documentary, but unfortunately ruined by unnecessarily loud background music. Such a shame.
I too am having a difficult time understanding due to the poor quality of the audio. I'm appalled to see so many comments saying basically 'get over it and use subtitles'. What utter selfishness and lack of awareness to suggest such a thing when many of us are vision impaired. SMH
The passion shines through in every video. It's truly inspiring.
Brilliant Baldrick, Bloody Brilliant
The sound mixer should try listening to this documentary. Too often the music overwhelms the commentary.
History still repeating itself
The music is MUCH LOUDER than the narration.
Great video, however, the music and background noise is too loud and sometimes drowns out the narrator.
Perhaps its just my machine (on a macbook air right now) but the sound is really unbalanced at quite a few points in this documentary. Im no audiophile btw- and unfortunately i lack the vocabulary to succinctly describe the issue im referring to.
its as if the background music is louder than Tony's narration itself? makes it kind of difficult for someone hard of hearing like me, especially since im pretty stoned atm (i imagine a lot of people watching this are lol) no idea if the sound can be fixed?
either way i love this channel thank you
Music extremely loud and drowning the narration. I give up.
I heard the narration just fine. Not sure what your issue is. Perhaps you should turn on the subtitles?
Great documentary! so fascinating..
The music volume is too loud when the narrator is speaking.
Steven
Remix the audio. Narration overwhelmed by music is what I walked away from this presentation remembering.
Excellent documentary, outrageous music and noise.killing the story telling.
Why this loud music????
All the commercials in the world won't get me to support daddy's boy Snow and his "it's like Netflix, but for History!"
solid episode. except the small fellow cutting the steak at the beginning. it was like he'd never cut red meat before lol
He had probably forgotten how...like many today.
Lewis .... small fellow? lol that small fellow is Sir Tony Robinson - and that meat looks raw!`
Ugh I almost threw up! It was raw!! 🤮
@@ChezzaAU ew!! Yeah it was! So gross!!
That meat was raw af.
On my phone, the music overpowers the narration. Ergh..
This would have been a really good documentary Tony Robinson is good but the background noise that is called music was dreadful and ruined it a documentary is supposed to be what it says someone narrating but with that noise a lot of what he said was lost whoever did the background should be sued for spoiling a decent program
sound effect is your Achilles heel
Very enjoyable.
However, Cæsar may have been tyrannical but he wasn't an Emperor! (Octavian/Augustus was the first Roman Emperor.)
Correct
Really great but the background music was to loud it drowned out the narration. Excellent research
Thank you so much for uploading this video. It is helping me get through the pandemic!
Very interesting, but the music most times overpowers the narrators voice..
Thank you for such fantastic content. Watched tons of Caesar related videos and still learned some new information from this vid.
You can't help but admire Julius Ceasar. The more you learn about him the more fascinated you become.
The two figures that changed the world had the initials "J.C"
Except that he shouldn't have been included in this "tyrannical emperors" video, as the view that he was "tyrannical", is certainly not objective, and he was definitely not an "emperor"; in fact, the first Emperor of Rome was Octavian Augustus (30 BC-14 AD), Julius Caesar's adopted son.
Admire? He was a piece of garbage from start to finish. Good riddance.
@@wvjeepguy8178 and you base your view on... what/care to explain what your view is based on?!?
@@mariusmatei2946 The documentary that we are commenting on? Did you just skip the entire thing? His own people murdered him for being a tyrant.
The sound mixing is horrible! Can that be re-mixed?
Excellent history narrative! I used an external processor to filter out most of the very annoying and unnecessary background music.
Music is too loud.
All learning will be prevented by the audio sound track. IT IS OVERWHELMING !!!
Thank you so much for the brilliant video and the MSF fundraiser. ❤
Ah yes, make the music louder than the presenters voice, great idea guys.
Amazing job telling an educational story, dispelling myth while still honoring the heroism. The storytelling, audio and visual effects and content is superb! It's great to see valid history portrayed in such a palatable way.
that was amazing an so interesting, thanx tony for another informative history lesson, i realy enjoyed it
Great video... my solution for background music Closed Captions imo easier to watch with volume minimized.
SORRY!!!! but the sound is a little off... when you overlay the music and some of the sound FX it drowned out the vocals a fair bit... i had to use the subtitles, again SORRY!!
The music is simply too loud during Caligula to hear anything
Turn down the damn music or turn up the narration. Worst engineered sound I've experienced on RUclips.
I can not understand why the creators of these kinds of fascinating documentaries find it necessary to play annoying loud music, especially while the commentator is speaking. I could not hear half of what Tony Robinson was saying because the music was much louder than his voice.
Neros revolving ceiling room was not the room he was in..Thats room is on the western Palatine
I love these stories but the background music is way too LOUD! I can't hear 3/4 of what Tony is saying and that's a shame. Please try to address this issue promptly because I love this show.
Turn up the music I almost heard Tony 🤣
This brought me happiness
0:11 That steak was still mooing
I literally can not stomach that 🤢 the best I can do is medium well
This is a fuller story of the actual Caligula ...it helps to understand the psychology of the times 😊
I would prefer NO music. It bothers me when there are really good, long-form documentaries, but they feel like they need to "make it more dramatic" and add music. I'm here for the information, not a rousing experience. It just makes me not want to watch, to be frank. Tony Robinson and the Timeline series seem to be the worst offenders.
In another comment, it says that this is pirated and the music was added or boosted to get around copyright. Blech.
Tony Robinson the presenter is a legend
Caesar's enemies were just stuck on stupid. He was so good for Rome. The fools against him were blind and jealous. Even his killers did not prosper in the end.
N. Korea and it's dictator awaits you.
Their hatred of him made them permanently irrational
Not that simple. There was a lot going on at the time.
@@kevinc809 Simple; every one who went against Julius came to a bad end. Killing him brought on a terrible Civil War. Are you stuck?
@@robertgiles9124 No I don't think I am. If you know Roman history you should know they almost all came to a bad end, before Caesar and way after. The people who wen't against him had many reasons. Being blind and jealous were not one of them. I'm not taking sides just saying it was more complicated than jealousy.
The music drowns out Tony’s voice. Thumb”s down
