  • Part 1. Getting ready, tank and seat off and striping all the parts in the way of taking the cylinder rocker cover, cylinder head and barrels off.
NOTE: As I mention in my videos I am not an expert, I am only showing what I have done not what should be done. I made the decision to carefully use scotch brite to clean the gasket surfaces and cleaned all surfaces properly in paraffin before re-installing. However I don’t think I would use it again as it must remove some aluminium and therefore alter the sealing surface flatness however careful you are.
This is a detailed record of how I have replaced the rocker cover, head and base gaskets to fix the oil leak. Following all of the steps from the very beginning to the end. Illustrating the work involved and glitches overcome. Hope it’s helpful and please don’t forget to subscribe.

    THANK YOU SIR 🫡
    Your vids are so helpful
I haven’t got my sportster yet and these vids has showed me what need to be fixed with these bikes over the long run so I can decide what kind of spares I need to stock as we we don’t have Harley parts suppliers where I live.
Thanks again for your efforts and the valuable info you share in your content.
    Wish you all the best
    Ride safe ✌️

I just bought my first motorcycle, an 04 Sportster 1200. I haven't even ridden it yet. I spent the past couple weeks getting it running and now I notice that it has a headgasket leak and I came across your videos. These are definitely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make them! I'll be doing this shortly, along with new rings. It would be really helpful if you made a list of any specialty tools that are required to do this job as well.

Thanks for watching and hope it helps, I would recommend getting an official Harley Davidson Service manual for your year, everything you need will be in there. Ride safe, Chris

Thank you from USA, I have an old 1992 Sportster 883 that I need to do head gaskets on. I am looking for tips etc. And you're correct, it's not gonna get better by itself & I have just the front cylinder giving me grief but no sense in going that far without doing the entire job. After looking at part 2 I see I'm going to have a much simpler time as mine is not fuel injected and has a lot less wires to contend with.

Hey , nice video well shot ! I have a question. Is it really necessary that I remove the whole carb and exhaust? Mine is wire tucked and quite accessible already.

Hi, Thanks for your comment. I was doing the head gasket as well so had to remove the exhaust and throttle bodies. I would think if you’re only doing the rocker box and head cover gasket leaving everything in place would be fine and makes a lot of sense. I would consider putting a little Ultra Black gasket maker on the rocker box gasket face, have a look at Part 6 @ 17:44 that seemed like a good idea to me. Good luck, Chris

Hello Bikervation, if I only want to remove the rocker box's and the pushrod covers.. do I have to release the oil in the engine oil tank? Thanks!

Hi, I didnt drain the engine oil as I only went to the cylinder base. Hope that helps, Chris

Thanks for the great vids. About to do the top end on my 05 xl1200r. Curious how things turned out when you were done. Any leaks or problems?

Hi, thanks for watching, no problems or leaks, I put the top back on in part 6 so that might be worth a watch. I was defiantly outside of my comfort zone on this one but just took my time and followed the manual and still managed to put the wrong bolts in (tired) but luckily spotted it, I didn’t edit that out as I thought it may help others. Good luck with yours and hope all goes well for you. Chris
