Excellent suggestions -- and it (rocking gently with nub-nosed wire cutters) actually worked for me to remove a nut from a Squire strat that had already been broken exactly this way once before.

What if the nut is plastic? You will just melt it and make a huge mess and have an even harder time removing it. Also, the term is "heat it."
