Damage from Improperly Removing Fender Style Nut
Drew, did you shim this guitar? I have the same model and I'm curious what other people have done
these aren't cheap for what you're getting
The original saddle didn’t fit in the slot tight. The pins are too tight. The nut fell off. Replace everything with tusq and reduce the action and tighten the tuners. Now you've got a great guitar.
This is incorrect . The string radius and saddle radius should be greater than the fretboard radius. If it's the same you end up with your middle drawing. For example, my Gretsch has a 9.5" fretboard and a 12" radius bridge. If you draw a circle around a circle, the outer circle will have a larger radius.
I’ve done it like that for years. Eliminates a string sticking your finger when playing behind the nut bends.
Good instruction, well explained. Don't mean to sound like a blowhard, but unlike the word "width", the word "height" has no th sound at the end. It's pronounced hite. Cheers!
Thx Drew!
Good review, thank you! Lots of excellent points. I'm a Yamaha fan, had or have 800s through A Series, Red Label and Luthier series. Very good to know all that about the 830! I'd always wondered if or how they were superior to the 800s.
I have one, my neighbor gifted it to me. And it's sounds amazing!
I wish I saw this before I bought one of these.
Where do you source your bone saddle material from at approximately 3 1/4 length is hard to find
I have a squire mini I got for free, the frets seem WAY too high, I can hear the change in pitch as I press hard or less hard, the string is bending over the fret, I guess because its just a cheap guitar, Can it be fixed?
I used to break off my strings that way quite often, though not at the tuner, more likely right at the bridge after playing Pinball Wizard a bit too heavy handed!
Looking forward to trying this. Would never have thought of it as it's so counter-intuitive that strings, of all things, would be susceptible to metal fatigue, which is I guess what this is. Those little sharp ends do love to shred the inside of gig bags, as well as stabbing your fingers at every opportunity, so it'll be good to get rid of them! Great tip, thanks.
Also probably dont use a magnetized screwdriver to scrape the pole pieces.
Hey Drew, Thanks for your very clear explanation on this subject. Even though I'm a qualified tech it has never occurred to me that a cap of that construction is a shield in one orientation and an antenna in the other. It's so obvious now that I've seen your explanation. Even though I shield all my guitars I'll probably go and check all the cap orientations now. Cheers Peter
Just tried this, I get noise when I thouch it regardless. The only difference I notice is when touching the side of the cap that has the hot wire on it you het a volume increase. If you touch the side that has the ground you don't. I think this is nonsense, you probably touch the cap at an angle so it touches the hot clipped side which threw you off. In reality that migrates with the clip. The caps work in any orientation, if they didnt the manufacturer would say so.
If it says Martin on the label then yes it does.
I bought a customX 12 string because it played and sounded fantastic. After playing it for a couple of months, i started looking for a Martin 6 string. I finally came across a custom X 6 string. In all honesty it played and sounded as goid if not better than several of the other more expensive Martins on hand. I took it hone and it is now one of my most prized guitars! I love them both and wouldnt trade them for anything!@
Just bought a Breedlove Pursuit EX S Concert BB CE from Reidys, really nice guitar, but the tuners are awfull, buttons all rattle & fall off, tightening does nothing, they still undo and fall off, the actual buttons themselves don't sit square on the shaft and super loose horrible fit
Thanks Drew
Nice and clear video - thank you! My motto is to clean any hidden parts just as if they were right there on show on the headstock. (Same goes for car restros as well.)
Another Really good talk about the Really important meat and potatoes of the acoustic guitar. I feel like Graphtec pins should be in the 4 th ( middle) row there ?
Really hear it on the “G” string.
Nice guitar! I think if people use lighter guage strings on their guitar, and also always remember to tune it down if in storage or if not playing for a while, that might help to not need a neck reset so soon in the future. Sort of like a type of preventative maintenance. And also I think if people use heavier strings on their guitars they might be more likely to have problems in the future, as they have a lot more tension. Would you agree?
You are a god send! <33333333333333
Augustine more natural need running in .
In other words his ability is in the tips of his fingers and thumbs, and cannot be transferred to you.
Isn't this guitar right handed. Based on F cut design
There should already be a strap button hole pre drilled on most acoustic guitars. I use a small paddle bit judiciously until i get the right dimensions for the stew mac reaming bit. Just think before you do,and do not rush the process. A little blue masking tape over the hole helps from maring and splitting around the end pin hole. .maybe a very light lube, like graphite dust on the end pin jack. The hardest one i ever did was a gibson cherry red sunburst humming bird. What friggin mess, red mahogany dust and shavings. They must dyed the guitar inside out. Just ridiculous.
Id be careful with the tape as it can help lift away damaged finish.
Hey bro, here’s a Tip’- begging for money is Pathetic🤌🏻🥳
If I was Martin and wanted to break into the affordable guitar side of things, I’d rather have the guitars made from wood overseas according to my specifications instead of making this laminated rubbish.
This glue is not available in my country
CA glue is really the only one with the properties needed for this job unfortunately.
Good point for ordering strings.....and anything else re using the P/N . Side note ..... I was informed ... by two Company reps .... that the name D'Addario .... Is correctly pronounced Dad-dario..... Not Dee - a - dario . Just saying , since everyone wonders what the correct way to say their name is .
Thanks Drew!
Broke one of my Nylons Tuner Heads last week, went to multiple local music shops including Guitar Center, none of which had any just "laying around", like it were something needing to be sweep up at the end of each night or something lol. Granted I wasn't talking to their Techs but they acted as if I was the first person ever to come in asking about them. Next day I went into shop when I knew their tech would be in and he charged me $1 It's not always as simple as you say and in the meantime one must do what one must do. I used pliers for a few days but mine looked nothing like that one and replacement worked np. Seriously whomever took pliers to that Guitar was a Butcher. If you gotta go a Night or two, just be careful.
is it NOT marked on the Orange drop??? =/ I mean a simple + / - symbol would SOLVE this confusion
Yup. And yes.
64ths? 32nds? How can people live like that? There's a reason most countries reformed their unit systems last millennium. That being said excellent information in this video.
I know, it's ridiculous. Just use millimeters!!
A lot of luthiers even some over seas still use these old units. I think its due to the age of the craft and the fact that 32nds of an ench are a slightly finer measurement unit. You also see imperial used in aerospace manufacture, I think for the same reasons. I am not here to stan for imperial, just give my thoughts on why we still use it here.
@@DrewsGuitarShop I suppose you're right, considering how old the craft is. At least these are standardized measurements, in the old old days people would just go by hand-lengths, finger-widths, or by measuring with their lower arms. It just seems jarring compared to the clear and simple metric system.
Thanks Daddy!
Great video thanks. So the black plate of the pickup should be grounded, too, right ?
Perfectly articulated!
I was today years old when I learned why "crowning" is so important. Thanks!
Adirondack spruce has wider grain pattern. The best.
I just received my Yamaha ft3 made in China and it is flawless. The action was perfect. It does have the plastic nut and doesn't seem to affect the tuning stability. I am now a big Yamaha fan.
So if I buy one of these through GC or Sweetwater etc, where can I get these mods done?
You can do it yourself.... It's as easy as changing strings. Nothing wrong with the stock nut and saddle... picking distance in-between the bridge and sound hole is the biggest difference in tone besides different types of strings.
Contact a qualified repair shop.
Sweetwater will do the work prior to shipping. For a nominal fee...
You mean to say the direction of these capacitors isn't standardized in relation to the print? You have to test every single one to find out? Wow, that sucks.
Thank you man, this is an important thing for any musician to know, especially if you under fire w/ no backup guitar. I would recommend taking a picture before removing the switch for correct orientation and I used 70 percent iso alcohol cause I'm cheap. Thanks for the video!
Hi, Great vieo. Could you please explain what the white part added to the saddle used for?
It's to stop the strings from cuttting into and making a groove in the back of the wooden saddle
Are you referring to the tie block potion of the bridge? Nothing was added to the saddle here as saddles are usually...well...just saddles.
@@DrewsGuitarShop right... wooden bridge, not wooden saddle
1:17 Damn Neil Young in a guitar demo is something I can say I've never heard (song is Old Man)
I have a guitar that appears to have have hazy areas on the backside. My understanding is that it’s from too much humidity? Curious what someone would recommend in this case.
