Cleaning Tuners and Other Metal Hardware
Thanks, Drew. A beautiful sound before and after. Probably the best $350 acoustic guitar in the current market.
Funny, the CME EP Jazzmaster I got was hands down the worst fretwork I've ever had in a FMIC guitar, and that goes back to the 80s and early Squier Affinities. It was absolutely terrible.
Issue I have is that during the winter when the radiators are on is that the humidity goes down big time. Then during the summer it can go up to 70
What would the main differences be between the FG 160-1 and the FG 180 J? It seems I could get my hands in one of these. Very similar price around 240 usd, Thanks.
So its normal for the distance between the string and fret board to increase as you go toward the 12 fret. I think. All i know is that the easiest playing guitar i ever had was a Gretsch Corvette solid body. And the reason it was easy to play is because the strings were closer to the fret board all the way down the neck and hence requiring less finger pressure. My Gretsch was stolen but i could never find another instrument that didn't have the strings really high off the board at the 12th fret making it torcher on my fingers to press hard enough to get a clear tone. I just bought a yamaha fg 75 acoustic and the strings are very high off the neck at the 12th fret making it qiute frankly a nightmare to play. So its impossible to have a uniform distance from strings to fret board all the way down the neck. With my Gretsch i only had to rest my fingers on the fret board to get clear tones. I haven't found another instrument that was the same.
Perfect! Thanks for taking the time to explain this. EMI on my re-wired Gretsch hb is killing me slowly. Gonna try your suggestions.
Thank you good video bro, just got my new tuners from amazon and I'm finna put them on right now easy day.
That bridge is actually on backwards
those little knobs are pretty cute
Very helpful. Thank you!
And watch it sterilize your sound...
Thank you❤
The tip around 14:51 is a great tip I wished I knew at one time before I learned the hard way lol. You obviously learned the hard way as well i see. Thankfully it was on my own guitar and not a customer so I just dealt with a couple of them being a little off. Adds character. Or thats how I cope with it anyway haha
I have this problem touching my bridge pickup. I just bought EMG solderless kit. I can not identify the problem 😢

Your Tool Seems To Be Wired Backwards ,, Your Positive Clip (Red ) Sure looks like It's Wired To The Ground Side Of The Jack
Wow, I recently started storing bridge pins just like you store screws!
Super helpful! This topic may seem simple but I had a hard time finding a professional process until this video. Thank you!
A herd of cattle can do less damage than your customers dude! The problems listed here have nothing to do with Martin!
High pressure laminate...nothing but "formica"...how in the world could a company like martin stoop so low...there's way too many nice all wood guitars out there for less money...I was sold one as a "koa" wood top, sides and back by one of the online stores...it was sent back immediately after I unzipped the gig bag...musicians friend apologized for the lack of knowledge of their salesperson...fake wood is not for me!
THANK YOU
Cool. Not directly related, but kinda.... I've recently been dealing with an almost cocked wah sound that I hear through my amps when playing at home using my pedals, but it's not there at the band room. It's not overwhelming the sound in general, but it's noticable at lower volumes. I'm chalking it up to the old and, most likely, not up to code wiring of the building I'm living in.
Hi I bought the FG830 and it sounds great. I would like to use nuts and a slice of TUSQ. Can you tell me the exact dimensions?
The high E string is a pain in the backside, you have to progressively tune it daily until it's tuned up, don't expect it to be in tune for the first time coz it will definitely break
Looks like an idea for a guitar that was not well thought out. No way they didn't know about this problem when they marketed these guitars.
i didn't realize lacquer didn't strongly bond with materials used in instruments. it kind of reminds me how i have to use certain glues with certain materials--for example, when using e6000 around styrofoam in sculptures, i have to create an isolating layer of paper mache and pva glue.
what tuners are they? did they fit or did you need to ream?
What is the product you are using? Also, not to be super critical, but your hand blocked your work most of the time
Thank you! helped me a lot solving the issue
My meter testing both sides of my orange drop was a .01 difference.
How long does it take for this to start happening to an instrument?
Yamaha puts plastic pins in their LS56/LL56 models LOL, it's absolutely a shame
Thanks for the info. I probably need to take my guitar to a shop. Tried polishing but it's is 90% milky finish. ProbAbly because it was stored in its case in a tropical humid environment.
Hello, I want to ask you as an expert - I tried FG830 and LL6 and I can't decide - my feeling is that with LL I'm paying more for the sensor - or are there really many differences in construction? It lists ARE wood, a 5 piece neck, but in reality it didn't seem like much of a difference. I will never need a pickup - I want to get the best acoustically for the price, and I think putting a bone on the FG830 and better strings will be very nice. Or is it better to choose LL6?
Total game changer for my brand new Les Paul. Awesomesauce 🔥
in a guitar with passive electronics I've been told by a few electrical engineers that this is a complete waste of time. As is buying sprague / vishay orange drops. If you've got a 5% tolerance capacitor, even a cheap red or green polyester capacitor. Yep the ones found usually in Asian guitars. Keep them, there is nothing wrong with them. Build a pedal or something with that previous solder. They are hyped up by crooks on a forum trying to sell theirs or some online listing trying to make more money off a harness or build. Why some paper in oil capacitors for example sound different than a modern day capacitor is because of it's tolerance. 20% tolerance was totally fine 60+ years ago, now we wouldn't use them in guitars if they just came out today. in terms of tone on a passive guitar voltage doesn't matter - higher voltages are usually just larger in size material doesn't matter the only thing that matters is tolerance, 10% of say a 0.1uf (100nf) capacitor can be sold if the value is between 0.09uf (90nf) and 0.11uf (110nf). The smaller the tolerance the more consistent they are so if you were as big as Gibson or Fender you're certainly not using 20%. If anything try 1950s style wiring on a guitar for how to hook the tone control up if you want to spice things up
The effects of this change in practice are as big as the effect of different capacitor types ..... 100% neglectable. Why do people fill RUclips with such kind of unnecessary content 😵💫
good to know about that acetate tape. i had to move things around slightly inside an espresso machine because i was concerned about positional shorts, and insulating tape would probably be pretty useful
best video , ive seen about the nitty gritty of guitar work, thank you so much
I’m kind of late to the party here…but this this video has to be one of the best on RUclips regarding guitar bridge issues. Thank you very much.
Thanks!
Price?
Awesome tip thanks!
Sound just the same
What’s up Drew great video here man. I work at the Breedlove guitar shop in Bend, and we use these tuners in our high end stuff, so I had no doubts about the quality. It was cool to learn more about these tuners from you. Keep up the great work!
Carvin/Kiesel have been using tung oil on the backs of necks or as a full guitar finish for years. I have it on my DC700's neck, it's amazing.
So.... Basically I just spent 14 minutes for you to tell me that looking at it with the writing side up the left side is the ground and the right side is the positive?....🙄
Thanks very much, the closest thing i had to hand was a golf ball and it worked well!
Drew has done fantastic work on my guitars, particularly my acoustics. He made one of my 12 strings that was unplayable, play like butter. First 12 string I've had that I can reasonably easily play a barred F chord! I now live 450 miles away, and if I have a guitar that needs serious work, I'll make the road trip!
Please don’t use a 9V battery to pop out a bridge pin from underneath. Any puncture to a battery can cause an explosion.
