  • Hello and welcome to That British Homestead,
Today I am making up for the lost filming that I have done... I filmed a wonderful video monday... it was amazing... Only one issue... not sound.... so I am having to think on my feed. sadly something that I am getting more and more used too.
in today's episode we harvest rhubarb, strawberries, and garlic. sadly out garlic has rust resulting in a very small harvest.. We talk about how we will prevent rust and white rot next year, with crop rotation and perhaps growing more elephant garlic. Luckily we only have minor allium minner.
THe strawberries are coming in think and fast, we are storing the strawberries in jars of pie filling, and eating them fresh and in pies. This is the start of the season of abundant and we reflect on motivation and burn out which is a major issue with allotment gardening.
With our rhubarb bumper crop we are making pies and stewed rhubarb, and rhubarb vodka, which we make for christmas presents. Something that always goes down well.
This is a turning of the seasons so the seed tent is now gone, the last wave of seedings are hardening off and we are clearing out the garage a post-spring clean and organisation, this is a good time to take stock and think about what we need for next year. The season of abundence is now here! strawberries are coming in fast, endless rhubarb, herbs drying, and the 1st few flowers on the tomatoes, soon there will be endless harvesting, canning and preserving. Like the ants we work all summer to have food for winter.

Thanks so much Rach! I'm so excited for tomato season! Omg 😨 and the tomatoes have just gotten their little flowers on them! So exciting
I had the bindweed! It's just the worst! I have spent an hour today removing it! I don't know how you do it with all your space and no weeds.... feels like I'm the only person in the uk with weeds

Honestly we are getting a little sick of them as fresh eatting I'm starting to have to be a little creative to get them to eat them! lol 😝 it's one of the best things about allotments you get to think outside the box.
We going to make a lot of them into fruit leather. But I also want to try strawberry ice cream too! That will be amazing in the summer!
I love rhubarb but there will be a time that I've had enough of it lol 😂 we get sooooo much rhubarb! Everything we get we get massive amounts!

My daughter bought me rhubarb gin oh it was fabulous 😋😋. Oh I haven’t bought a proper mic 🎙️ yet but it’s on the list. Stuff is so expensive for cameras 🎥 and add on. Yes but you do it all with a little one attached 😂😂 I don’t know who else could or would do as much as you do 🥰.
On a different note my garlic is crap it don’t split even after a super cold winter 😢, slugs ate my tomatoes and mice are making huge holes 🤦‍♀️ ah the joy of gardening. Have a super duper week Nik, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

I've made sloe berry gin too thats said to be good! But as someone that doesn't drink I don't know. I make vanilla extract which is the same thing really and that's outstanding! Yes cameras are so expensive m
There is this old tv program called 'the good life' and it's about this couple that give up their jobs and become self sufficient in a posh housing estate here in the uk. And they say... 'the goats out of milk, the chickens have nuts, the mice have eaten all the potatoes, there is a hole in my boot! Isn't it wonderful I'd have it no other way. That's how I feel about to they are good problems to have coz they are fixable

Ah i think we had a bit of white rot on a few of our garlic too, just peeled them and froze the cloves. Will move beds next year too, potato bed swap.

The issue I have with potatoes is that they sprout up everywhere! I'd rather them stay in one bed lol but hay! I think I'll ferment them this year

You look an absolute pro at picking/harvesting good job 😊 New subscriber here, inspirational lil’ talk on motivation. With you on shopping by the way 😂 shopping generally seems to have gotten tougher if you ask me, since Covid more or less, security making you feel uneasy, at least this is my experience, and not enough actual people serving at tills, too many machines and inferior ones at that. Looking forward to catching up on some of your vids.

Hay welcome! I hate shopping so much! It's nice to see others are the same! I don't know how people do weekly shops! lol 😝 we are every 3 weeks or so! I've gotten to the point that I'll make anything with a short date tk not have to shop. My OH won't let me get a goat tho! Or I'd never have to go for milk!

I really don't understand what's going on with the weather near me (North of England). It's literally freezing, it's 13 degrees Celsius today 😮 nothing is growing, in fact stuff is dying cos it's so cold overnight 😢 I feel like I'm in a different country to you!! It's only 250 miles away, how can that make such a difference

The weather is mental here! We had a mini drought and now rain and cooler! It's crazy how much a few miles make! I'm sorry that you garden isn't growing so well! I'm sure it will pick up! Keep it well watered and it will be ok! I've just put some new herbs and salad in as all my spinach bolted... I know what was I thinking planting it so late! ⏰ I'm sending you good vibes! Keep going! Soon it will be amazing
