  • How do you know when your garlic in the backyard garden is ready to harvest? Well, it depends on the type of garlic you're growing. Elephant garlic and hardneck garlic provide some really easy signs that they're ready to harvest, but softneck garlic is a little more tricky.
Join us as we show you all three types of garlic (elephant, hardneck, & softneck) growing in our backyard garden and provide helpful tips on when to harvest. We'll harvest scapes from some of our garlic and pull the entire plant on some others.

Witches brooming tends to be, for us, from new garlic varieties that are not yet well adapted to our crazy winter weather. Too hot and too cold, most years. Best way to sort that is replant from the least affected bulbs. Naturally happens, because the witches broomed ones don't store as well. Some people feel it also works better, in the long run, to use the what you called pearl cloves, or spring garlic for next years. Side benefit when it happens, is many tender, delicious scapes!
If you plant any size clove, small end up, and you don't see a green plant coming at any point, there are usually only about three reasons, in the south. Rot, which people in more rainy areas mention. Winter is our rainy season, but our raised beds don't get rot issues, or we just still are not getting as much rain vs others.
The other reason cloves either don't sprout or go missing here, is squirrels. Squirrels like certain varieties of cloves, and just dig them up to eat! I've caught them mid-crime. Had to start growing those favored varieties higher off the ground. Last is prolonged freezing after way too much hot. Which can be mitigated if you have some sort of frost tunnel that can go over them.

Those hard neck garlic bulbs with multiple scapes is new to me - I have never seen bulbs with more than one scape each. If all the scapes have the flavor of normal scapes, that variety could be a huge draw at farmer's markets - where scapes are usually in high demand.

Anybody have any recommendations on garlic farms? Last year, our first garlic crop, we grew Korean Red Garlic from a friend's garden and from a garlic farm @ $29 a pound. The commercial garlic was okay, but didn't compare in size or taste to the friend's garlic. This year we're eating the commercial and replanting the friendly, but I'd like to have an alternate source in case of crop failure. Lessons learned: 1) remove the mulch after the ground begins to warm up to make it easier for the sprouts to grow. 2) After the ground has warmed up, return the mulch to keep the ground uniformly moist. 3) Fertilize in early spring, not early summer. 4) Have a plan in place to utilize the ground for a fall crop after the garlic harvest in July. Last year we planted on 3 Nov and harvested on 3 Jul. A good harvest, but we might have had better clove formation with earlier mulch removal and an earlier spring fertilization. Mulch was a combination of shredded leaves and straw. Still struggling with planting in mid summer. Heat and insect issues. Looking at using shade cloth and tulle. Iowa Zone 5a.

It's been tough this year running my Florida weave around my tomatoes. I'm growing red snapper and roadster. The plants are so thick and bushy I'm afraid of breaking branches and knocking off blooms. I've ran a 2nd row already but I think I'm going to try just wrapping the outsides of the plants from pole to pole without actually crossing back and forth. My rows are only 18' long and I have 3 poles per row. I don't think they can fall over with the row, only side to side out of the row. I think the string will be tight enough in 9 feet. So in other words I'm going to cheat on my 3rd row. If it doesn't seem like it's going to work I can add more. I may even cross over once at 4 1/2' just to be safe. Weaving in and out of a spindlier variety isn't so bad but I've never grown tomatoes like this. The stalks are as big as my thumb and the branches are as long as they are tall. About 2 1/2 ' tall. Maybe only 2 foot around. I don't think I'll ever go back to indeterminate varieties.

I wish I had left my elephant garlic in the ground longer. I was cutting the scapes and you said if it's making scapes it's done so I harvested it. But it didn't all seem to make individual cloves this year. And they aren't as big as usual. So I guess I was supposed to keep cutting scapes until the tops turn yellow? I guess I'll try to remember that next year

I have heard of some Elephant Garlic found at old homestead maybe a hundred years old. I don't plant and harvest cloves. I have permanent beds in the yard and just pull up the ones that bloom. Throw some mulch on them when they die down and some fertilizer on them in October. South side of shrubs, trees, and fences works great.
