- Episode 58: How to Convert an Epson Eco Tank 8550 to Sublimation - 13x19 Printer. This tutorial starts by unboxing my brand new 13x19 printer - the Epson EcoTank 8550. Then I fill with sublimation ink INSTEAD of the ink that came with it. Then, I walk you through downloading the driver, printer settings, and options for printer profile settings. Finally, I do a few test prints and try out different color settings for a 30oz tumbler print. This printer is a great alternative to the Epson ET 15000.

I just want to thank you for such an informative video. So many teaching videos skip important steps but you covered every step thoroughly. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words! :) I am glad you found it helpful.
FYI: The printer is not completely out of warranty just because you put sublimation ink inside of the printer. One should still register the printer. If it's determined that the ink caused an issue with the print head, yes that part is voided. If the printer has an issue with the power or another mechanical problem, it's still covered. Therefore, one should still submit that warranty form to Epson. I'm in the IT world FT.
thank you for this information
Not true. With another Epson printer converted to sublimation few months later paper tray failed and contacted Epson for printer replacement, they said no. Why? Even though the paper tray (Paper try sensor damaged) had nothing to do with the ink, warranty was void just because I used sublimation ink. I have gone all the way up to corporate executive and they too still insist the printer warranty is void. They shared warranty policy link and it does state if not using Epson manufactures inks voids warranty to the entire printer, not just the print heads for ink.
I just bought one! I'm nervous and excited!
Yay!!! Good luck. I almost do sublimation exclusively now. Easy and fun!
you can buy a device that resets the chip in the maintenance cartridge. most are not even half full when the printer tells you it needs a new one. (this may be different for different inks, but you can see by carefully breaking the old one and seeing how full they were.) if you reset the chip and monitor the fullness of the maintenance cartridge you can save lots of money.
How is the printer holding up since you first set it up? I am looking to get one, but I am leary since putting the sublimation ink in the printer will void the warranty.
Also, do you have to do a daily maintenance to keep the heads from clogging?
So far I have not had any issues. My only thing is that the inks are hard to tell where they are at because they kind of dye the side of the window area. I do not do daily maintenance. I do try to print once a week or every few weeks if I am not sublimating a lot at that time. I like it!
Thank you for the step by step walk through, you saved me from a very big head ack! lol
Yay! I'm so glad it helped you. :)
So far your video is easy to follow along. I had already started but then wasn't sure about the PB and the Gray ink. I bought and already installed Hiippo ink but not the PB or the gray. Is it ok to use another brand of PB and Gray sub ink and what would you recommend?
Same here i came to the comments to see if there was an hippo options i am slightly annoyed because alot of viewers are scouring the youtubesphere to find current answers but since most of the INFLUENCERS are on to the next trend and are not responding to the current influx of new buyers because like me and probably you we all got ours for XMAS after saving our coins and also finding out the new trends arnt all the hype theclaim to be while sublimation has its place like HTV i pray you find an answer because i had an entry enrty level ecotank i had to use as a regular printer after my 50 dollar canon acted up and i was straped for cash so i had an unused printer and chipbags and adult capri sun order that was a must.
I imagine you could use another brand for those 2 colors. I think the brand I use lets you buy them individually.
Deepwoods Diva TV, I am not sure if Hippo has the extra colors as I use Xpro for this printer. I use printer's jack for my smaller one. Xpro does offer the colors individually if you need just the grey or PB.
Cosmos ink is supposed to be pretty amazing too. thanks for the video. it was very informative
Thats what we got to, cosmo ink💯
Cosmo Inks are not MSDS certified and do not have ICC profiles. Second, Cosmo inks seems to have work for other Epson models but too many people had issues with Et-8550. Say away from this brand.
Thank you for posting and providing very helpful information! Has anyone tried to use DTF film in the sublimated model? Thanks
Thank you for this video, Nice! Question, what paper are you using to align print heads and cleaning, regular 8.5 x 11 or sublimation paper? Hate to waste sub paper just for setting it up, thanks.
I used regular printer paper for those. If I have to do cleanings or whatnot, I put plain paper in so I don't waste sub paper. :)
Great video. Can I use this printer to prints photos also on photo paper with sublimation ink, or I have to replace ink ? Is that maintance box is for it ? Many Thanks
Once it is sublimation, you can't do regular prints on it.
Thank you so much! This was very helpful!
Glad it was helpful! :) Thanks for watching!
Did you ever figure out how to get even more accurate colors?
Hello i'm reaching out to you for some assistance I got the epson 8550 and purchased hiipoo ink and my print aren't as pretty as yours! they are very dull im trying to decide if its the ink cause I haven't changed my settings much. Any info you could help me with I would appreciate
I have never used Hiipoo ink, so I am not sure why yours. Have you pressed one of your prints yet? They do print dull on the paper. What paper do you use? It's a combo of ink and paper.
@@FlipandFlutterCreations I use Asus paper do you think it would possibly be brighter with hiipoo paper?
@@elissapettyjohn9217 you can try another brand and see if it helps. I use ASUB. But hiippo might be better with their paper.
Just curious, did you ever use the CD disc that came with it because I’m trying to do mine for windows 10 and I see everybody’s doing videos but they’re not seeing if they’re installing the disk for the hard drive for using windows. Let me know. Thanks.
My laptop didn't have a CD drive. That's why I just used the drive from online.
@@FlipandFlutterCreations I got everything up and running. It came with a disk. Thanks so much for reaching out.
Do you let photoshop pick colors ? if yes, what ICC profile do you use?
Thanks for the video ! Could you please tell me if you can make a 13 x 40 inch print. Can you customize the size of print to 13 x 40 inch ? Does it let you do it?
I am not 100% sure on that. I have not tried to use anything larger than the 13x19 paper. I believe some printers will let you feed in a roll.
Thanks for your video! I just set up my printer yesterday and had issues with my green colors (printing blue). I am a new sub to your channel and new to photoshop. Can you show how to set up, size and print from photoshop? Thanks in advance and for this video especially!!
I can create a video for Photoshop if it would help. :) Thanks for watching and subbing.
@@FlipandFlutterCreations thank you very much - it would help me tremendously feel more comfortable with it and to print from there to have fewer issues. Again, thanks for responding! I look forward to your video!
How does a converted ET-8500 or ET-8550 compare to a SureColor F170 for sublimation transfers (as far as quality and color)?
Major difference. Epson SureColor F170 is a 100% sublimation printer where the print heads are designed for sublimation inks. Any other Epson models such as ET-8550 printer the print heads are not design for sublimation inks. Whereby, converting an Epson printer to sublimation is always a risk. Why, sublimation inks will eventually clog the print heads. Can the conversion be done? Yes, but at a risk. Also, any Epson models converted for sublimation will void Espon’s warranty for the entire printer. I have Epson SureColor F170 for the last two years and it still prints awesome. I also think Epson sublimation ink is far better than most brands, vibrant and true to colors. Only drawback is the limitation of paper size, 8 1/2 X 11” to 8 1/2” X 14.
I do not have a SureColor, so I am not sure. I do know I like my 8500 and it has worked well for me. :)
Impressive! Thank's a million.
Thank you! :)
If you deselect bidirectional printing you’ll get even better quality prints.
I will try that! Thanks.
Some say premium presentation matte is best. What do you think?
I did try that instead and I don't think I liked it. I went back to what I had originally. I'll have to check my settings to be sure.
@@FlipandFlutterCreations thank you so much for this video! I have been working for days trying to get my color right and you helped so much! I wasted so much paper lol your video really really helped me. 💜
@@lanieelizabeth4055 yay! I'm so glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
@@FlipandFlutterCreations I’m definitely gonna keep watching! If you ever change your settings or find better settings please make a video about it! Or could you make a video with presentation matte vs plain white paper?
Have you found that those settings are the best?
Yes. I haven't had to change them yet. :)
I noticed that you didn't use the white ink for printing on dark objects. Are you planning on not printing on anything but light colors?
Tommy
Sublimation does not have white ink unless you get a much more expensive machine. So, I stick to light colored poly shirts. :) Mostly grey.
Great video.
Thanks! I appreciate you watching! :)
Just purchased but do you have to have all 6 inks for it to print?
I believe so. I think what others have done is just put black in the 2 extra spots but I bought the 6 inks. The link should be in the description. :) Thanks for watching. :)
I purchased an epson 2808 printer and also purchased extra warranty with it. i used it from february to September and now it will not print black. i called epson and they told me the warranty will not cover it since i used sublimation ink. so if you use sublimation ink it will void your warranty. now i am out a printer and looking for a new one again. whats your take on this?
Yes, you do void the warranty when you convert it. I like this one. It works well so far!
My recommendation is to buy a printer that is made sublimation. Epson SureColor F170 is a sublimation printer that is far cheaper than ET-8850 that isn’t design for sublimation.
@@LouRao I was really interested in The F170 although it does not do large prints, but it is not a mainstream printer. You cannot purchase it in major stores like BB, Staples, Walmart, etc. It is only readily available with local distributors. Also, to date, Amazon only has 2 reviews, this is a red flag to me since it's been on the market for a while now.
Once you’ve filled the tanks and allowed it to cycle you can then put the remaking ink in your machine so as not to waste it.
Hey hey, I have a question about the ink - I got this printer and I am very excited to start. However when I got the 6 colours sublimation ink, instead of extra two colours being the gray and photo black it came with light Cyan and light Magenta. I have not come across anyone that talks about using those colours... I haven't filled anything in yet as I don't want to start with the wrong thing - but feel a bit overwhelmed now as just wondering what the difference particular when it comes to quality - do you know? I live in Australia so some of the good sublimation inks that I have read about like Hiipoo and Cosmos is not available here as far as I can see but I can order it from Amazon, it will just take some time to get here.
,
When I ordered the 6 inks from InkXPro, I got the grey and photo black, not light cyan or light magenta. That is so strange. Try looking up inkxpro on Amazon or Etsy as I believe they sell on both and check that it is the 6 inks for the 8550.
I can't get mine to print the correct colors my purple looks more magenta. How do you get the color adjustments right.
Is the magenta before it presses or after? The color never looks right before you press it. If it is still not printing right, you may need to adjust your color settings. I never touch mine and it works right, but I know some people use ICC Color Profiles for printing.
@Flip and Flutter Creations I just set up my printer yesterday and my bright green printed blue. I don't know if it was my print setting or the icc profile or printing from silhouette studio was the problem. It was frustrating. I need to learn how to print from photoshop since I pay for it. Thanks for this video!
@@SimplybeingRsame here. Did you ever figure out how to fix the greens and blues?
Hi, i was watching your video. I learned alot from testing the ink and more. but i have a question. we are starting our business and everything, and i see you have a Dell laptop..Is Dell desktop good to do sublimation work for a shirt business??
I love my dell! I was able to get credit through Dell and purchase it with 6 months same as cash, so it helped when I was first starting out. I know a lot of people use macs, but I am more of a pc person. I use all the Adobe apps with no issue. I did have to get an SSD drive to use for my images.
Thanks.
Where do you purchase the clip boards?
I get them from Heat Press Nation.
Does anyone know how much ink one can expect to consume per print..?
It's not as much as you would think. I have only purchased ink one other time since converting the printer.
OH, and, I have to keep the printer on and where it is at with setting it up, correct?
I set it up where I was leaving it while doing the set up process. Not sure if that's what you were asking. :)
Did you not need to remove the rollers?
Nope. 🤷♀️
@@FlipandFlutterCreations ahh, I'm confusing Sublimation Paper with DTF. Makes sense 😅
@@SubtleHero ok gotcha. :)
Hi. I have this set up I’m getting a pink haze printing around black (before I even hear press) do you know what could be causing this?
Could it be from your image?
@@FlipandFlutterCreations No. I even just typed a word out and printed it and it’s still there, it only shows up around black.
@@Stacy-Marie that's so odd. I've never had that happen. Which program are you using to print?
@@FlipandFlutterCreations Adobe Illustrator and Adobe photoshop. Is there a better interface I could try?
Who else was yelling"Move your laptop... move your laptop!" When she hit print
😂😂😂 Haha! Oops. Thanks for watching. :)
Having issues with mines right out of the box..I use Asub and mines keeps jamming.😢 no matter which tray I use
Which size paper are you using? I use the 13x19 version fed in the back and have never had a jam before. I don't use 8.5x11 in this one as I have a smaller sub printer for that.
Hi Can you able to print dtf in there?
Not sure if you can. Not the way I have here. This is to convert to sublimation.
I thought we were not supposed to ever do updates?
I only did the first set. Now, I ignore all of the updates.
@@FlipandFlutterCreations why do you not do updates?
Can someone please help. Can this printer print without grey or pb ink? Or does it need all 6 ink. Thk in advance.
I use all 6...I have not tried with just one color.
Warning ⚠️ there's really loud 🔊 music jump scares!
Sorry about that! I'll see if I can go in and fix it. I thought I had the music section down lower.
Over 45 minutes and you didn't even do a press onto an item to see how it went. That's time I will never get back...
Sorry. This video was all about converting it. I use it many times in the other videos I have.
Really, How Boring
Sorry! Some people find it helpful to get step by step directions.
How rude.
