If you’re going DIY I would recommend swapping out the EGR Cooler, EGR valve, AND the intake manifold. If you have the cash put on all new parts. If not clean all three to the best of your ability. This cleared my PO304 (cylinder 4 misfire) and P219A (bank 1 air-fuel ratio imbalance) and removed the annoying engine shaking at various speeds. I have a 170k 2012 Prius Hope this helps!

It could be either the egr system that is clogged, or coolant getting into the engine via blown/worn gasket. Better test the egr system first by simply taking off the egr system wiring clip. If the car stops knocking, its ur egr system. If it keeps knocking, you have an expensive blown head gasket on yiur hands. I just changed mine. Took about 3 days with no prior knowledge. Done a ton of research.

Here is a list of the possible issues for those of you having to deal with this.
This is a sign of a misfire and might not throw any codes
    1. get new spark plugs, (if you're replacing one you might as well replace them all)
    2. Get new coil packs (they're right on top of the spark plugs, same as before, if you're replacing one replace them all)
    3. EGR valve, which is what is being zoomed up on in the video, that valve controls air into the combustion system (when air doesn't go in at the proper ratio you can have a misfire)
4.fuel injectors, if your fuel injectors are all gummed up OR you have bad gasoline that can also cause a misfire and lead to that shaking in the engine. You can try using lucas fuel additive, my uncle swears by it, me personally seeing as mine is at 220k will have to replace the injectors anyways.
    5. the most expensive fix, head gasket, due to the fact that these cars turn on and off multiple times throughout the drive, the head gaskets are known for failing over time because of the constant expansion (from heat) and contraction (from cooling down). You can check if its the head gasket by doing a pressure test on the coolant fluid or just checking the fluid itself.
I for one replaced spark plugs and coils two years ago and am now looking at the EGR valve. Will go to injectors next and then finally, I hope it isn't so, the gasket.

@@JungleBoogie786 knocking disappeared after a while of driving then got really bad all of a sudden. I checked the coolant levels and could see the coolant was low after the car had cooled down and I opened the lid. So it means the car is losing coolant from somewhere, more than likely its being burned off somewhere in the engine which is why the car shakes badly when it first starts up, which is pointing to a head gasket, Added some gasket sealer in there so we'll see where it goes in the next couple of weeks, Check back in a few to remind me to tell you what I did to fix it, haven't had time to replace the egr valve since the problem stopped in the winter

Headgasket starting to fail, once that coolant drops, that's how you know it's a head gasket issue. Water is getting past the gasket, clogged egr will deprive the engine of air resulting in burning oil and headgasket issues. I have my pruis V completely torn apart, on the rebuild process at the moment. I tried replacing sparkplugs and coils, nope didn't do shit, if you get this rough idle, definitely get it fixed or you engine can blow a rod through the block

How can I fix this problem with my Prius I always have drained battery and the car won’t move and I’m sure it’s bad gas

    • @shoptimewithdrew

Sounds like multiple problems. I would start with the battery issue first.

@@jaydeedee6805 sometimes after a Prius repeatedly tries to start but fails to start it will stop doing so to protect itself until you unplug the 12-volt battery for about 10 minutes and then it would start to cycle again to try to start, I hope you still have some energy in the traction battery, you may try to start it with a jump-start on a 12 v, I ended up having to remove the fuel tank to get all the water I can out of it and then also flush the entire fuel line all the way to the fuel injector rail, then replace the fuel injectors and spark plugs and give it an oil change because some of the misfire fuel can also end up in your motor oil and it will give you some codes at your fuel trim sensor and as well can get ruined to replace that senser is about $300, I spent all of December working on my car and I'm fighting with the gas station hoping that they might help me pay for what I done but they're resisting, we only get gas from that gas station but I remember that day we got gas it had rained a few hours before as soon as we filled up with gas and we left the driveway at started running like it was going to turn off, we barely limped home, good luck I hope you find the problem

I would check for a misfire and then presser test the coolant system and see if the coolant is getting in the cylinder. Most commonly, a head gasket. Could be plugs or clogged EGR port.

It's coolant leaking at the head gasket into the cylinders. Since water doesn't compress it knocks until it's burned away. You will need a head gasket replacement.
