My favorite one that many people miss is when Kimbra comes in to express her side of the story, he starts Repeating the same complaints while she is reduced to a background harmony. He is deaf to her plea so she removed herself from the picture.
agree. and visually, the paint represents their life together. She was part of his life. When she mentally checked out and cut ties, the paint comes off of her as she is no longer in his life. He is left painted with all the memories that he can't get over... meaning she has moved on and he hasn't... which is part of his problem to begin with, he was stuck on somebody he used to know before her.
And the video fits with the lyrics really well. He's being painted into the background, as from his perspective it feels like she's harshly erasing him from her life. But then the camera zooms out and we see she's painted into the background too, because from her perspective she was invisible all during their relationship, as he was hung up on someone else and was also kind of manipulative. At the end the paint comes off her because she's freeing herself and starting over.
Not sure that’s what it means, there was a video about this song where gotye shares what happened, he was kind of manipulative, but to himself, making himself believe she was right for him. I don’t remember all of it but you can watch it, it’s very interesting
According to Songfacts: "Somebody I Used To Know" was both produced and written by Gotye in his parents' barn on the Mornington Peninsula, south-east of Melbourne. It finds Gotye addressing a past lover, reminiscing about their relationship and break-up. The song draws from the aftermath and memory of several relationships, but he told Rolling Stone Australia that one does resound louder than the others. "There is an ex-girlfriend I know." he admitted. "It was five-six years ago. It wasn't a nasty breakup, but it was messy in the sense that we hurt each other more than we needed to because it wasn't a clean break. I guess it's closest to what the chorus is about. We both realized we had to move on and we haven't seen each other since."
Gotye is Belgian Australian. Kimbra is a New Zealand singer. The song was released in Aust/ NZ in July 2011. And became a hit. It then went on to become a mega hit across many countries. Including the US in 2012. It was one of the first big song hits of the internet age.
Powerful song. Very, very POWERFUL and totally relatable. Been there. More than once. Treated like a stranger by someone I was in an intense relationship with.
She was his rebound and when the honeymoon phase faded he realized she wasn’t what he wanted, like she said he was stuck on “somebody he used to know”. Ironically she also became somebody he used to know.
It's probably the most real song I've heard about this subject. Its so strange that you can be so close to a person, care for them so deeply and think you know they well, and then its like a light switched turning off and you wonder "who are you?". Its like you don't even know who they are anymore because you've never seen that cold side of them. Its hard after having invested so much time in that relationship and then its all down the drain and you won't see or hear from them anymore. lol - yeah, its happened recently.
Someone I know remembered when this song came out when he was a kid... - he listened to this song when it had like maybe 100ish views, (he was one of the first people to listen to this). He went and told his parents: “I can tell this song is going to be big”. - He was right!🤠 - Keep up the great work Jayy!!

@@koretmulder6316 "and I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know" part of kimbra's lyrics. he was a manipulator and makes everyone listening to the song feel sorry for him. The truth is in kimbra's part of the song. unless someone has been in a manipulated relationship before, they wouldn't understand kimbra's part. Being in a toxic relationship such as the song sings about should end... completely. she totally removed him from her life. like... changing her number and having her friends get her things from him. @Film4 Archives i don't think that she's wrong for feeling the way she feels. Sometimes being friends with an ex truly doesn't allow that person to fully move on. Especially if they are continually bringing that person up in conversation. Even though the song didn't imply that, she does say that "you said that you could let it go... That i wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know." She removed herself completely from his life because he still wanted that someone that he used to know in his life for whatever reason at any cost. Then he made it seem that she was wrong for denying him the obsession/friendship with someone he used to know. What the song doesn't mention is what caused that previous relationship to end. Maybe he did the same thing in that relationship. How can one compete with a ghost from the past if that person won't let it go. The person trying to keep the relationship afloat will sink alone because the other person is still caught up in a past relationship. Idk if that answered your answered your question. If not I'm sorry. This song is so deep on many levels because it's not just the lyrics but the tones that they stress as they sing that just stir up emotions and cause us to wonder.

I always find it interesting to see in the comments of reactions to this song many men will relate very strongly to the pain the male voice in the song feels, of being treated like a stranger after a relationship ends. It seems to be a very common pain in men after breakups. Completely leaving aside the fact that the male voice himself was not happy in the relationship. He felt 'so lonely in her company' and admits that he 'was glad that it was over'. And once we hear her voice we really learn this relationship was not well at all. She remembers 'all the times you screwed me over', having her believe it's 'always something that I've done'. He was unhappy in the relationship, yet kind of clinging onto it 'addicted to a certain kind of sadness'. We also learn that it's most likely not the first relationship that went for him that way. 'A resignation to the end... always(!) the end'. It's not the first time a relationship took that course for him. So we get the picture of a basically toxic relationship, in which he isn't happy but pushing all the blame onto her making her believe it's always something that she's done. But she doesn't want to 'live that way' or have to 'read into every word you say.' so she wants out. Her pivotal line here is: 'You said that you could let it go and I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know' I've seen some people understand this in a way that he was still hung up on a prior relationship. Personally, I see it a bit differently. On breaking up they agreed 'they could still be friends', and i have the suspicion the friendship is being offered just to open a way out. but then she cut him off to a point were she had her friends pick up her things and even changed her number. Honestly, I think despite wanting the breakup he was still hung up on her, not fully letting her go, thus forcing her to make a more drastic and clean cut. And now suddenly the rejection of the person he had rejected long before the relationship even ended stings him bad. He wants to be the one rejecting, he cannot bear being rejected. That's what I get from the song. That being said, to all the men who bemoan the pain of suddenly being treated like a stranger by a former lover. Frankly, unless you happen to know each other since childhood, or have insanely intertwined friend circles, or you donated a kidney to her mom or something of that magnitude, yes, the moment you end the relationship you are nothing to her. You had meaning to her because there was love. If there is no more love, there is no more meaning. It's the only sane thing to do. Do you expect women to keep a hoard of satellite ex-bfs around? Would you start dating a woman who has a bunch of exs orbiting her in that way? I know it hurts, but that's just life. You decide to break up, it's done. Move on, and let her move on too. She's not responsible for your emotional well being anymore at that point.

This song has so many twists and turns. It's truly a hypnotic song with its melodies and will stick with you for days and days. What I take from this song is that he dated someone before Kimbra. For whatever reason they broke up but he can't completely move on from her. He then met Kimbra and started a relationship with her but could not let go of his previous love. So, as time went on he would do and say things to Kimbra to wound her and then blame her in hopes that she will want to break up, but remain friends. When she realizes he's not going to change and she's finally had enough she breaks up with him and he's fine with it because he's still hooked on his ex. It sounds like she at first still wants to be friends but you know how hard that is when you truly love someone, so she decided to cut him off completely, had her friends go over and collect all her records and then changed her number so he didn't have any way to reach back out to her. He couldn't understand why she couldn't be friends and that's because her love for him was much deeper than his for her because he was still hung up on somebody that he used to know. She moved on and he's still fighting the feelings he has for his ex. He's never really going to be able to give all his love to someone until he finally works through his feelings he has with his ex. Crazy...I feel like most of us have been in 1 or both of those situations before and can feel both of their pain. At the end the paint is removed from her and she is out of the picture.

Off topic, I know, but I don't know how many times in commenting on various (not just Jayy's) music-related videos recommending them, I NEVER get anything back! While I know they have the proverbial cult following, they DESERVE their moment in the sun! If nothing else, I THANK YOU for at least mentioning this brilliant band!

It seemed like she began to change and grow differently. Maybe at a greater rate than he did. You notice she shed her colors and he kept his. She became somebody he used to know 👍🏾👵🏿🎵🎧🤗
Interesting how this song can be taken so many different ways. At first he was in love and then he said he was glad it was over but then he was upset that she cut him off so abruptly. She said he screwed her over multiple times making her think it was always because she did something to warrant the screw overs. She didn’t want to live that way with him anymore. He said he could let it go and he wouldn’t be hung up on her but he obviously can’t handle the break up, he still wants a connection. Great song.
It's funny men react to this song with a lot thinking and talking. And women react with a "Huh" and a head nod. We're like, yeah now we know why she sent her friends and changed her number "

They perform this song using one guitar. Not one guitar each, one guitar. Being played by all five of them. At the same time! Seriously! Even if it takes you a year, please please please put this on your list - you won't be disappointed!!!!!!!
Well, now he's somebody we used to know... On another note, check out a little band called "The Eagles'...desperado, love will keep us alive, I can't tell you why are a few of their songs. The basic story is that while he was in a relationship with this girl, he still hadn't let go of the relationship with the person before her. When you listen to his version, he says he's okay with them being over but doesn't understand why she's so bitter about it. When you listen to her version, she says he told her it was over with his ex but he's not, always comparing her to the one before, and still hung up on her. That's why she's so bitter. Thanks for reacting. I love this song and haven't heard it in awhile.
Him: "You can leave if you want, I don't even care." Her: "Okay, I'm done with your shit. I'm done." Him: "Why're you being like that? I thought you loved me?" Her: "And I thought you didn't even care."
The guy wanted to demote her to "friends with benefits"... she said NOoooooo! He was surprised 🤣 Great song! Version with only the vocals is even more powerful!
Yes she was smart to get out of a toxic relationship from a narcissist who is addicted to a certain kind of sadness. By not playing his game she was free from his games 🙏
interesting you find him more into the relationship than her because I felt it was the other way around 😂😂 he felt like she was basically obsessed with him but he wasn't that much into her and that's why when they broke it off she was the one who couldn't maintain the relationship on a friendly level and had to completely sever the ties whereas for him it was easy to switch and he was glad for it and he felt slightly offended that she said they could be friends but eventually couldn't do it... really interesting how people can interpret things so differently
"Have your friends collect your records and then change your number..." Yeah, sorry. Y'all aren't friends anymore, whatever that original breakup promise was.
You must listen to Hearts a Mess -- I see that someone else suggested it as well ---- the video is awesome and interesting too --- You notice he has a different sounding voice -- Wouter De Backer (Gotye) sounds like a cross between Sting and Peter Gabriel --- check them out if you havent yet --- they sound similar and are awesome singers
He didn't appreciate her when they were together, and never really committed to her. She got tired of being gaslighted and blamed for everything, so she dumped him. She even says she didn't know that he was "hung up on somebody that you used to know," someone prior to her. Now he wants to convince us that he never cared, and maybe he didn't, but just doesn't like the fact that she is done with him, and he thought he was the one in control. Very clever idea, a dialog with two different takes on the same subject.

Your reaction is magnificent as usual.
Love love love your breakdown!! I think you nailed it!!!
Gonna have to subscribe to your channel , great job!!
"Somebody need a pedicure" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Girl, when you said that I couldn't stop laughing through the whole video.
😂😂🤣🤣
Great reaction as always Jayy!
It is absolutely hilarious seeing you watch it like "Ooooh my, they're upset!"
This was/is a really great song, simple and to the point and the duet is really great from aPOV from both sides
That video has nearly 1.8 BILLION views right now.
If Daniel Radcliffe had an older brother lol
PLS, YES
An ex: "Let's be friends."
Me: "Uhh, NOPE!"
The music in the beginning of this song sounds like a song from XTC, no? "Senses Working Overtime," maybe?
@ElyseHFM FINALLY someone points out one of the most UNDERRATED bands of all-time in my opinion: XTC!
Off topic, I know, but I don't know how many times in commenting on various (not just Jayy's) music-related videos recommending them, I NEVER get anything back!
While I know they have the proverbial cult following, they DESERVE their moment in the sun! Even though they haven't existed as a band since '05, and unfortunately with Moulding having no desire to record anymore, they may NEVER again!
If nothing else, I THANK YOU for at least mentioning this brilliant band!
Actually, Gotye sampled the intro from "Seville" by Luiz Bonfa ruclips.net/video/MSDl8w3wR2E/видео.html&feature=emb_title and build upon that melody
@@geoffelder2236, surely! They really are underrated. I have to go through my albums to recall song titles. Only "Mayor of Simpleton" comes to mind. "Dear God?"
@@geoffelder2236, just watched Teez McGee do "Dear God." Go leave a request!
@@elysehfm8797 I always tell anyone who likes '80s music and are unfamiliar with them, that if they're interested, they should start with their excellent singles collection: "Fossil Fuel".
But I warn them that if they like that, they will definitely want to dig into their entire catalog!
Great reaction. Thank you. 😊 One of my favorite songs.
1:05 *"Somebody need a pedicure"* I'm wheezing 🤣🤣🤣
I LOL at that too. 😂😂
I love the dialogue between the two.
another priceless reaction love it.. :D
I love your reaction to this song .
Hello from SC - William
This song brings back summer 2011 memories
Look up some Kimbra, you'll love her.
The melody is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Bah Bah Black sheep!!!! I bought this cd, lots of great song and amazing videos. Check out the video for Hearts A Mess.
You have a lovely voice.
Awesome video! Always love seeing people react to pure masterpieces for the first time!
Edit: maybe just turn your voice volume up a bit! Otherwise amazing quality!
Yes pretty cool song ✌️❤️💯
I’ve only had clean breakups or breakups where a friend with a grudge made me hate them, and quickly cut them off and make up with my ex
But this song still hits with very close friends I’ve lost on bad terms
You ended up choosing the correct pronunciation "goat--ee-yay" - well done, clever girl :) His real name is Wally De Backer and he's Australian. This won the song of the year at the Grammys in 2013.
Good Australian and New Zealand music.👍
Hes a narcissist that didn't really want her but he didn't want to be without her. She was done with his bs and he doesn't like it..from Gotye
This song shows us that there's my version, there is your version and there is the truth hahah
I was waiting for you to listen to this song for so looong 🥰
I mean, how you live for 10 years without listening to this masterpiece. I was just first year high school when I heard this song on the bus way back home accidentally and I don't regret it. I'm a college student now, btw
Gotye told Rolling Stone Australia that this song is about an ex-girlfriend, saying: “It was five-six years ago. It wasn't a nasty breakup, but it was messy in the sense that we hurt each other more than we needed to because it wasn't a clean break.
I love this song so much it's powerful af
People focus on voice & lyrics but we legend focus on music 🎧🕺
It seemed like she began to change and grow differently. Maybe at a greater rate than he did. You notice she shed her colors and he kept his. She became somebody he used to know 👍🏾👵🏿🎵🎧🤗
How have you never heard this song? It was everywhere for weeks.
SUCH A GREAT SONG
Jayyyyyyyy!!!!!! Thank you for reacting to this cool song by Gotye!! I've been waiting and waiting for you to react to it!!!! Now you need, absolutely need (even if it takes you some time to get around to it - I'm sure you have many many requests) to react to "Somebody That I Used To Know" (same song) by Walk Off The Earth. They perform this song using one guitar. Not one guitar each, one guitar. Being played by all five of them. At the same time! Seriously! Even if it takes you a year, please please please put this on your list - you won't be disappointed!!!!!!!
Bic Runga is another great female NZ singer ... “Sway” is awesome but you have to review with the vid 😊
This is still my jam
Well, now he's somebody we used to know...
On another note, check out a little band called "The Eagles'...desperado, love will keep us alive, I can't tell you why are a few of their songs. Also, for something different, there's a singer from Norway called "Sissel Kyrkjebø".… she could give Celine Dion and Whitney Houston a run for their money.
The eagles do not support reaction channels and have expressed on multiple occasions they do not like when people react to them so out of respect they will never be on my channel
I think that the paint coming off is him now telling the whole picture of the story
Billion plus views lol!! X
beautiful
The basic story is that while he was in a relationship with this girl, he still hadn't let go of the relationship with the person before her. When you listen to his version, he says he's okay with them being over but doesn't understand why she's so bitter about it. When you listen to her version, she says he told her it was over with his ex but he's not, always comparing her to the one before, and still hung up on her. That's why she's so bitter. Thanks for reacting. I love this song and haven't heard it in awhile.
Not confirmed
Great tune!
He has a great voice
Had a billion views too...
Him: "You can leave if you want, I don't even care."
Her: "Okay, I'm done with your shit. I'm done."
Him: "Why're you being like that? I thought you loved me?"
Her: "And I thought you didn't even care."
The guy wanted to demote her to "friends with benefits"... she said NOoooooo! He was surprised 🤣 Great song! Version with only the vocals is even more powerful!
Assuming
Yes she was smart to get out of a toxic relationship from a narcissist who is addicted to a certain kind of sadness.
By not playing his game she was free from his games 🙏
In Louisiana and we spell that Gauthier.
Lmfao your reactions are priceless lol
Some serious expert use of the xylophone. 😉
Good reactions.
Ah! It's that song by Sting and Katy Perry!
How did you miss this song? It was everywhere for a year
Please react to "Don't You Want Me" by Human League. Another great he said/she said song.
There's a group (I think it's Walk Off The Earth?) that did a video of this song with 5 people playing one guitar. It's pretty cool.
Great Australian artist
interesting you find him more into the relationship than her because I felt it was the other way around 😂😂 he felt like she was basically obsessed with him but he wasn't that much into her and that's why when they broke it off she was the one who couldn't maintain the relationship on a friendly level and had to completely sever the ties whereas for him it was easy to switch and he was glad for it and he felt slightly offended that she said they could be friends but eventually couldn't do it... really interesting how people can interpret things so differently
I'm listening to music over 60 years actually the weirdest song i ever heard. Tho they both have good voices, great melody and I like it.
True story
Seems to be about an unhealthy relationship. For whatever reason, those can be the hardest ones to get out of.
Keep it up
💖
Bad breakups happen. Changing your phone number and having your friend pick up your records is not cool even vindictive.
@@thomassanfrancisco5850 I never broke up with anyone, because I never dated! I just love this song. But still thanks for the advice :)
Check out Three Days Grace cover... They have 2 versions
Fucking LOVE this song
"Have your friends collect your records and then change your number..."
Yeah, sorry. Y'all aren't friends anymore, whatever that original breakup promise was.
☮️💙💙💙
You must listen to Hearts a Mess -- I see that someone else suggested it as well ---- the video is awesome and interesting too --- You notice he has a different sounding voice -- Wouter De Backer (Gotye) sounds like a cross between Sting and Peter Gabriel --- check them out if you havent yet --- they sound similar and are awesome singers
i haven't figured this out yet,, but input appreciated,, but it makes me think of harry and meghan!! OMG! WTF??
Many ppl gone years believing that was Katy Perry, even I thought it was Katy until recently I was shocked to learn it wasn't Katy 😂
You pronounced it perfectly
He didn't appreciate her when they were together, and never really committed to her. She got tired of being gaslighted and blamed for everything, so she dumped him. She even says she didn't know that he was "hung up on somebody that you used to know," someone prior to her. Now he wants to convince us that he never cared, and maybe he didn't, but just doesn't like the fact that she is done with him, and he thought he was the one in control. Very clever idea, a dialog with two different takes on the same subject.
Please React to Samantha Sang"s hit song "Emotion". Written by 2 of the BeeGees.
