That last one sounded good until you mentioned the gouging of the eyes and castration...
Castrated? William the Conqueror didn't fuck around.
Most kings at the time did
I didn't.
Shush Longshanks, no one cares.
Obey the Laws or face the consequences.
William certainly wasn't a katana-plonker, and look at him - he conquered England. How many katana-wielding people have done that? Be like him, use a proper sword.
it looks like some kind of Falchion in the picture
+dave aston or a fancy scram seax.
To be honest it's more the fact that he's wear a full harness of plate armour in this portrait that seems the egregious thing about this painting.
OlaftheFlashy good point
dave aston Thank you.
Interesting, one of my ancestors actualyl crossed the channel with William and they were given the parish of Stopham
No one cares
i care
Eh I care a little. That's an interesting story if true.

omg this channel is awesome. My favorite youtuber teaching me history!?!??!?!? hell yes
Im so happy this is back
Some of these laws were carried over from the Saxons. Interesting though.
Which? For the most part they seem alright
William wanted to be seen as the rightful successor to Edward not an invading conqueror. Keeping to Anglo-Saxon laws was beneficial in this.
Trial by hot iron and by combat as well as the payment of the caepgeld for a start
Yeah, that 'caepgeld' bit is pure (West) Germanic - and the upholding of these laws and traditions would have been wise & essential for maintaining order. All the titles and castles in the world wouldn't have been of much use to the new Norman overlords if they couldn't rely on their (mostly) Anglo-Saxon vassals to fulfill their oaths, pay tribute and levy troops when needed.
The Normans were fantastic empire-builders & equally great at holding on to these possessions for centuries. Be it Britain, southern Italy, Sicily or the Levant - they had a remarkable cultural finesse and aptitude for being foreign overlords, so to speak. Honestly, they remind me of the British in the late 19th century, at the height of Victoria/Pax Britannica. The British should have embraced the NORMANS as their national forebears over the silly tribal Angles & Saxons. Forget Arthur, praise be to William, Conquerer & First of his Name!
Ted Brogan Triggered! I care not for those cheese gobbling wine guzzling froggy ponces! UT! UT! UT! UT!
Thank you, this is a godsend; I'm actually working on homework concerning William the Conqueror now.
He is my great Grand father several times removed. I love learning about my family history.
Aside from number 10 most of these are pretty alright.
Being told what religion to practice isn't so cool
kokofan50 Ya but all of Europe was religious at the time and didn't know better so it didn't really matter much.
You racist
General noob What the fuck? Racist? Good job with the leftist buzzwords.
Cole Kinghorn These laws favoured the french
Wait number 9.... did he just say no slaves?
Better than Muhammad
Not exactly a High Standard to beat.
Especially since the self-proclaimed "Muslim leaders" were not satisfied with what Muhammad actually did, they had to make up lies to lower his standard to their level.
what is your problem with muhammad savages?
King Edward--Shouldn't Edward the confessor be known as Edward the 1st? He was the first king named Edward....then we have longshanks as the 1st.
Þæt wæs god cyning?
Ha!
He preferred that people attest with some risk the crimes of others, and likewise to defend themselves in person and as a demonstration of their innocence, for innocence should be defended by ferocity. But he did not prefer a penalty of death, where someone could be found guilty, but rather forced blindness and castration, which is to say humiliation and impotence. Surely, that could be avoided by the innocent by a well-fought battle against their lying enemies.
The Holy Church's blessed doctrine shines through these laws. William was wise and righteous to make these laws, which are based upon The Holy doctrine of the Christian church, especially The Blessed Truth of Monotheism, which is the truth that there is only one God, YHWH, which is the greatest Commandment according to the holy Lam (St. Mark 12:29-24, Deut. 6:4) and the Second Greatest Commandment (Lev. 19:18), which clearly is the inspiration behind the prohibition of the death penalty and slavery. Amen Amen, the first and ninth laws need to be put into place today. Tho I'll admit that number 10 seems a bit far. I'd rather the gallows than castration. Non nobis domine.
number one went really well
Law 6: the inspiration for modern "listen and believe" legal policies.
No, just the opposite. It didn't say that if a Frenchman accuses an Englishman that the Frenchman will be believed, but rather that the Englishman would be given a trial to prove his innocence. Also, an Englishman could challenge a Frenchman for false accusations.
The English got off easy.
Ever heard of the Harrowing of the North? Look it up before you say that English got it off easy.
I forgot the /s
# 10- I forbid that anyone should be slain or hanged for any fault, but ...
What does 'fault' mean in this context? I'm guessing false witness/accusation.
I think you should riff off the short ones like this
Stock is still sold in a market in a city in front of witnesses
number 9...number 9....number 9
Turn me on dead man. Turn me on, dead man.
William the Conqueror is one of ancestors. I didn’t know this about him until I asked my grandmother about our family tree and she said to look up William the Conqueror. I’m glad I did look him up.
I need help! Was Athens a democracy? I'm in a heated debate in my AP world class.
I know it's a little late, but I don't think Democracies in the literal sense of the word can or will ever actually exist.
The desire for power and all.
Nor should we desire such a state.
The closest you will get is a Republic.
What did your class decide?
willfourth We decided it was a democracy but it wasn't truly democratic because they didn't allow everyone to vote for example women. That was really long ago though :D
I'm not surprised he was a conqueror. He had a full set of ebony armor AND an ebony sword!
Sargon you should have mentioned Williams greatest feat, a genocide in Yorkshire.
Alan Rufus made sure Normans didn't tread on his land in Richmondshire, perhaps because of this. He nagged William about the destruction and loss of life until the King went up to York to apologise in person. It seems Alan nagged him about it again on his deathbed.
Am I getting this right, no death penalty under William, but putting out eyes and castration were the top punishments? And if so, when was this law abandoned?
William was Germanic not French. Norman's are not French but Norse German.
Sing me to sleep, Sargon
How do the English remember William? As a douche Frenchmen who conquered the Anglo-Saxons or founder of modern England?
Most people only know he won the Battle of Hastings in Britain. The educated on the Issue tend to side with the latter Interpretation.
The greatest man ever. Anyone who does a genocide in Yorkshire is a great man though. Alfred the Great is the founder of 'England' though.
Most English who know history will agree that not only was he one of the most important and greatest people in our history, but also not really French. He spoke French, but his family were of Danish descent, and France didn't really exist, especially not where Normandy was.
#9 seems this lil fact is ignored today.
Meh, I did better.
King Edward "Longshanks" I, Hammer of the Scots, Lord of Wales and King of England
Yeah like when you conquered Scotland.... oh wait haha
Are you seriously deleting mild criticism to your video?
WTF
sargon? I highly doubt that's the case
I was surprised too, lets hope it was a glitch, its youtube after all
What? I deleted the previous video due to an error and reuploaded.
ohhh. Couldn't think about that possibility. I apologize.
+HYEOL That will be one Ox for your transgression.
oh god.. not the ordeal by hot iron!
Hang on a second / did he abolish the death penalty then???
Except, I guess, for High Treason, that is, trying to depose and/or kill the king. I note that even William II didn't implement that until after Alan Rufus (Mr "Mercy is not strained") died.
More merciful than Muhammad.
I never declaired
So was sargon an ancient history major? lol
He's more of an ancient history junkie.
He was in govt Tech support before he started RUclips.
No.
The real Sargon? I think he was major in what at the time was called "contemporary" history.
man can see the western democracy and freedom in the comments. hypocrites.
One faith in Christ, yet he slaughtered so many people?
So was this progressive compared to the Saxon laws?
Well, alive but crippled versus executed. If you escaped the worst, both systems fined you.
Though in many cases castration was WORST. It was torture and you were not guaranteed to survive afterwards.
Sargon?
a day like a week a week like a month a month like a year!!!! / however forget the Balfour declaration it already has being arranged done with. way before 1913. relax . 1066.
