We have a now 16 week puppy. We feed in the crate and followed basically this process. He was trained in less than 2 weeks and because he was never out of our sight he didn’t have one accident in the house.
Did you give the food near the end of crate time? Like he had already been in the crate for 90 min, you put food in there, wait 15 min or whatever, and take him outside?
This is helpful thanks. I’m adopting a 2 month old puppy soon…was curious if you kept the water inside the crate at all times and did you take it out as soon as it drank? What did you do at night, did you cut out water completely but still take outside every few hours? Thanks!
My dogs would literally walk then as soon come in the house use the bathroom.. i locked them n the crate over night they literally starting using the bathroom outside ever since ... the crate method is truly the way to go
You are very missed on your show. I can't believe that a 50 something man like myself would wake up and have coffee while watching your show. You and your beautiful pups would make me smile, laugh and at times cry ( now an easy thing to do since many of us now stay home and don't want to get sick). But anyway, I never had an opportunity to thank you . Sincerely, Riccardo
This is by far the BEST HOUSEBREAKING training video I’ve seen. I’ve watched over a dozen in a row today and they’re all either what not to do or long-winded with no real instructional specifics. I’ve Fostered and trained dogs for two decades and his basic Day One crate training procedure I’ve used for every single dog I’ve taken into foster, whether puppy or elder, because it not only assures housebreaking, it establishes that initial structure and boundaries they need. Each dog earns its freedom time on their own individual progression schedule. Great job, thanks for this visual instructional housebreaking video. 👍
It reminds me very much of the recommended schedule for a newborn baby. It’s basically a triangle as well. Wake up, feed, “play time”, at first sign of “tired” (yawn, eye rubbing) lay down for sleep again
hi, can they eventually learn to just have free reign of the house after they are crate trained for sometime? I don't want to do the crate forever if possible.
@@kellytesi4185 probably but mine is 3 1/2 months old and we’ve had her for almost 2 months … and she’s nowhere near being ready to not be in her crate at night. We use a pen during the day when we have to leave the house or for when we can’t watch her closely. She only goes in her crate at night to sleep.
@@kellytesi4185 absolutely. But each reaches that on their own timetable that you’ll have to assess… and sometimes it’s a trial and error and “oops, too soon” moment. Many times it’s a graduation… from crating to gating off in a certain safe area of the home, most especially when no one is home. Usually from crate to gating off in a kitchen (with garbage not within reach) or a hallway.
What happens once this is successful, but the kids (the ones doing the method while we are at work) go back to school and there is no one to do the method?
I second this 10000000%. My Pomsky has such bad separation anxiety I can't even go to the bathroom with the door shut. I haven't left my house in a month, send help... and food. 😅🤣
Thank you! 🙏🏾 I rescued a dog a week ago who had no potty training. I tried scheduling her meals/water, multiple walks outdoors daily, and she would continue to eliminate indoors, anywhere. I started your method yesterday and since then, she’s been successfully going outdoors! This is also helping with crate training, so double thank you!!
I used this same method to train my dog and worked really well. It wasn’t Brandon’s but same concept. I recommend the same process to all my friends who got dogs. I have one friend who was really against crating her dogs and she spent months getting her dogs potty trained. From my experience this is the best method.
My dogs used to sleep in a play pen type crate then they were puppies but the owners of the parents trained the puppies to go potty in a litter box so that’s how they were trained until we potty trained them
@@TheAndreas1203 You’ll need to correct the biting. It’s simple: Say “no” Give the dog one of their toys and when they start playing with it give plenty of praise & lots of treats. Make sure to always have a variety of toys & if your dog likes to chew then get them toys or meat bones that they can chew on. You’ll have to do this a few times until they get the general drift that playing with their toys is fun and rewarding. I’d recommend teaching them the “leave it” command directly after as it works really well on walks when they try to eat grass or pick up sticks.

Thank you, Excellent video production, it was like a show on TV. I was with you up to the last point about leashing them near their accident. I dont understand how that helps. Omg yesssss!!! My dog doesn't signal neither! She's doing her best though. She'll sit at the front door at times. But most of the times she says nothing. I just have to stay on top of schedule. I'm thinking of getting a bell for her but I don't know how to train her to hit it when it's potty time.
Our first pup's crate was in our living room but he cried first few nights we had him. I was then told the crate needed to be in the bedroom so he could hear and smell us. Worked like a charm. Had better sleep then, however, he hated the crate during the day. Picking up a pup in two days. We didn't do the treat method previously so I'm pretty confident this will work.
I wonder if it’s ok to have two crates? I definitely want a crate in our room for night time - and we have a door to outside from there. But we have a big house and I’d want a crate in the living area for daytime as well
You make it look so easy! I'm considering rescuing a stray that I've made friends with in my neighborhood. I don't know his history. What if he's scared to enter the crate? What else is important to consider when house training him? I have a very small house and 5 cats.
I have two dogs, 4 and 8 month old. They not only do their business inside, but they eat and drink them, enjoying that as they enjoy vegetables. When I take them out, they just play, hold themselves and do it just when we step back inside

Ok, thanks! I’m picking up my puppy today. It’s been a year and a half since my Golden girl passed and I haven’t had a pup in 15 years so I’m feeling a little nervous.
So when they get back to the crate after the free house time, you should continue the training throughout the day and repeat the triangle, or now just leave them in the crate?

Great video! I just got a 9 mth old from the shelter and it doesn't matter how long or how many times I walk him ,he goes only in the house. Can I use this method starting now ?
Hello, I just rescued a 2 yr old mae Frenchie. He needs to be fixed (happening soon) I am going to try this method. Do you put water in the crate? Also, he is marking, getting a little better but what do you suggest for that? Thank you.
We got a eight month old rescue dog, German shepherd collie mix, and when she first arrived, she went immediately when we would go outside and poop. However, it’s been a week and a half now, and she is seeming more stressed about the new situation than she was when she got here although we did, find out she was sick and had her on antibiotics. But now that she’s been better she’s very scared of every noise and everything that moves and we live in an apartment complex with just a small area for her to go to the bathroom on a neighborhood that we don’t want to be walking around, especially at night or early in the morning. Now she’s gotten to where she is too scared to go to the bathroom outside. She just keeps listening to every noise and every car that passes and unlike when she first got here she is seemingly terrified. she noticed that I had gone to the restroom in the bathroom and quickly after use the restroom on the bathroom floor and she’s been struggling with going outside. I had watched videos, saying to take her out in a lot of short breaks so we go out 10 times a day probably more for five or 15 minutes but she will not go outside. She comes back inside and goes into the bathroom on the floor now will take a towel and drag it over her poop and pee after seeing me clean it up try not to react to this going in the house and also trying to clean it up in a negative or positive way but I am becoming desperate because I do not know what to do. It’s a small one bedroom apartment so we didn’t think we needed a crate. However, I was considering getting one but she does have a corner designated for her so she has her own safe space. She’s extremely smart she’s just very scared and does not have much confidence. She’s a wonderful dog we just need help helping her also I should mention there are times where I take her outside where we go on longer walks now that she’s not sick or as the vet said contagious anymore but she still will not go, it seems like no matter what. I’m home five days out of the week for most of the days only leaving for sure errands so her schedule stays pretty consistent. She is very traumatized for whatever she went through. I know she was in the pound for a while and then she went to Petsmart and went to a few different homes tryouts that didn’t work out because they said she was territorial. She is not aggressive she just likes her space, but if she’s free to play with the dogs, she loves playing with them, she just doesn’t like it when she’s on a leash or in her safe place and there’s other dogs in her space. We could really use all the help. You could give us all the advice. We are all open ears. there’s no way I am sending her back especially after what she’s already been through. Thank you.
There's a big difference in house training an adult or older puppy and an 8 week old pup. I have a 13 week old pup that I brought home at 8 weeks, he is doing excellent with house training but he is not completely house trained and I don't expect that out of a pup until they are older. They just can't hold their bladder for that long at a young age. Also, if you put toys in a crate with a dog then you should also give the warning that the dog should be supervised.
Hi I watched your video it’s great. I have a three month old lab or doodle who is peeing all over the place. I’ve got the crate now and set up but he’s very very unhappy. In the crate and cries all the time. What do I do about that?
What do you recommend for example my dog (8 month old yorkiepoo) that lies down in the grass when I take her outside to potty. When she has been in the crate already and I believe she needs to “go”Do I put her back in the crate? And try again in a few or supervise for free time.
Thank you for this video! we got our 3.5 months old puppy almost a week ago and we are considering getting a crate. Can you leave him in the crate when you get out of the house? or only when you are in the house as well? Or do you recommend to let him be outside the crate when we leave the house?
Help! I have a 7 month puppy and an 11 week puppy. Children too so the process easily goes haywire. The older puppy does well but as soon as the little puppy has an accident, the older puppy does it on purpose. Kids opening the crate, I've been zip tie them shut. Too I know it best to train separately but is impossible with everything else. Any tips for any of this I would appreciate. Both are cool dogs and yes it was reckless and irresponsible getting both. Ya know, just watching this again gives me hope and I just need to be more on point with the process. Thanks for your videos. My name is Jen 💫
hi brandon- i got my first puppy ever like a week ago. he is now 8 weeks old. the methode you outline makes sense but what i dont understand is how many times during a day this cycle gets repeated. say his day start at 7, so nights sleep then maybe eat drink inside the crate and then outside. ok after his free time back to crate and so on. my question is how long this cycle should be and how many times during a day? appologies not very good at explaining. thank you
Gr8 video thank you. We just adopted 2 rotties ...... regarding crate training them both do I need to train em separately or can u do so together? They are fairly close to each other. But don't want distractions? Tia
One thing I disagree with... after free play time, I always take them back outside before going back in the crate. Especially with young dogs/puppies. They often have to go again, and I dont want them to have to hold a full bladder right off the back in their crate.
I have a crate for both of my 2 maltipoo girls Daisy and Rosie. Daisy pees in the garage at my dad’s house. They still get into the trash sometimes in the bathrooms. Rosie steals our food if we leave food on the couch or table. Rosie would jump on one of the dining room chairs and then jumps on the table to get the food. She ate almost all of my dad’s McDonald’s burger. He almost had both of them to sleep outside for the night but we have cats that roam the neighborhood so I told him that it’s not safe to leave them out all night for in case they get in a fight with a cat. They are small dogs. I wouldn’t want them to get seriously hurt. He changed it from sleeping outside to out for a few hours and dad letting them in when he goes to bed
Does this work on older dogs as well? We have a 7 year old Yorkie and now a 4 month old puppy. Training the puppy but the older dog still has accidents. Wondering if we could retrain?
Good evening, Brandon. In your potty training video you mentioned the “triangle”. Do you continually repeat the triangle consecutively throughout the day? It’s not just “in the crate for 90, outside, house time, then crate again and it’s over, correct?
You mention the cinder block thing when the pup has an accident in the house. Should you clean up the mess before you tie the pup beside where it happened, or do you leave the mess in place until the pup is released from the cinder block?
Just got a 4 month old lab puppy. My partner and I both work out of the house, but I'm lucky I can do remote work to train our dog during the day. Our work schedules vary a little - I start at 8 and finish around 4:30 while my husband around 6 and finishes around 2:30 to 3 p.m. our little puppy sleeps in our room in a dog bed, and is good at night. We don't want to crate her at night, since we'll want her crated while at work. We can come home and let her out and check on her and play, etc. before going back in for afternoon. Is it okay to crate train her while home during day and just leave her in a separate room from office?
@Brandon McMillan do you have any tips for a Boston terrier that sneaks around in the night and poops and eats it? She also does it when I leave the house. Leaving her in the crate all night or when I and gone is not an option. She loves and goes to her crate when told to but will not tolerate it all day or all night.
Do you have any tips/suggestions for potty training a puppy mill rescue that literally went to the bathroom in his crate for 8 years? We tried the crate method, but he just went to the bathroom and got it all over himself (and didn’t seem to mind). So far, the only thing that helps is making sure we give him plenty of opportunities to go outside and tons of praise/treats when he goes outside, yet even though he has made progress, he still has accidents inside from time to time.
Do you use this same routine at night? Also, if they go back outside after they come out of the crate does the 1 hour of house time start over? I have a ten week old Rottweiler.
Seems very easy. I work part time. I have to crate my 9 month old puppy for 6 hours. I let her out 2 or 3 times before I leave. Come home I get her out of crate, take outside immediately. I let her stay our at least 10 or 15 minutes. She's got quite the barking going on both outdoors and in her crate. Any suggestions on how I can get her potty trained. This Sunday will be 2 weeks that she's home with us. Many accidents both last week and this. Help!!!!
What do you do if you can't crate train? Our American staffordshire terrier has destroyed 3 metal crates from the inside. We even had to move the crate location because she somehow would manage to knock the crate (from the inside) across the kitchen to fall down the stairs, affording her an escape from the then ruined crate.
We just rescued 2 senior dogs. Scout, an 11 yr old Bichon and Leo, a 14 yr old Yorkipoo. Is it possible to potty train these two at the same time? I put a diaper on Leo after every walkie cuz he is constantly marking … even after a long walkie. HELP……
Hi Brandon, I have a five month puppy who just arrived couple weeks ago. He seems to go pretty often as soon as I take him out of the crate, and into his playpen where he eats. When he’s done eating since he’s already gone. I give him 40 minutes time supervised. I’m in apartment building. I find this puppy. Does not have any consistent elimination schedule. Please help.
My dog is 2 years old ( just got her from a shelter) and is not food motivated, blue heeler mix. she is very timid, about 35 lbs and seems to be scared of lots of things. Not sure a crate would be the right fit for her.
Trying this out on my 4 month old puppy. She starts to get antsy in her crate around the one hour mark. Do I ignore her or take her out? Any tips? She can hold it overnight.
I've watched a few videos on this including the Masterclass. The Masterclass suggests 3 hours of crate time to start out, but this video suggests 90 min. What is most appropriate for a 2 month old puppy?
I know this is an old video but maybe someone will help me with this. I have a pyrenees and he is great except one thing. I think I know the answer I will get is to pen him into just the room I am in and observe him but I figured I'd explain the situation fully. So he is crate trained, so to speak, he has been in it for weeks now, and he likes his crate pretty well he takes all his meals there. The issue is that he would RATHER be out with people so when its time to crate him again in this process he isnt that keen on it- which has led to a problem. He sneaks away into some downstairs room / corner to do his business rather than go toward the door or otherwise wait it out- because he doesnt want to go toward the door because he has to pass the crate to get to the door and I THINK he just doesnt want to go back in- and associates going that way from the house, with going back into the crate. I want to get him properly house broken so he can spend time where he likes to... but I am running into a wall where he sneaks off (the downstairs is kind of big) and other areas to do his business. Am I right to assume he should be tied down near where hes done the business, in different parts of the house? A friend suggested "resetting" him and moving his crate into that other room hes been using and taking him out THAT door. I dont want to confuse the situation so I am looking for experienced advice.

Hello, I just rescued a 2 yr old mae Frenchie. He needs to be fixed (happening soon) I am going to try this method. Do you put water in the crate? Also, he is marking, getting a little better but what do you suggest for that? Thank you.
What you did is so cool! I like you Brandon!
Thank you.
I love all your videos they're so helpful.
I love your shows thanks again
Great
brandon youre the best
This is really good information. Thank you!
Do you put the dog in the crate when you go to work or sleep?
There's a big difference in house training an adult or older puppy and an 8 week old pup. I have a 13 week old pup that I brought home at 8 weeks, he is doing excellent with house training but he is not completely house trained and I don't expect that out of a pup until they are older. They just can't hold their bladder for that long at a young age. Also, if you put toys in a crate with a dog then you should also give the warning that the dog should be supervised.
Also no collar in a crate ever
Why? To both comments 🤓(toys w supervision and collar in crate I mean)
I meant that I was trying to do the same house breaking triangle
Very helpful
Brandon, what if you have an older dog who hates the crate? How do you train them to like it so this method can be used?
How about crate training for transport? Do you have any tips (routine) for that?
I got a question from a friend. What if your dog eats the poop they are sitting next to while they are being punished inside?
hi brandon- i got my first puppy ever like a week ago. he is now 8 weeks old. the methode you outline makes sense but what i dont understand is how many times during a day this cycle gets repeated. say his day start at 7, so nights sleep then maybe eat drink inside the crate and then outside. ok after his free time back to crate and so on. my question is how long this cycle should be and how many times during a day? appologies not very good at explaining. thank you
Gr8 video thank you.
Can you use any type of crate like a open top gate or like a playpen style?
it has to be small, otherwise they will go in the pen.
With the cinderblock, do you clean the poop/pee first? Or put them there while the poop and pee is there?
When you complete the triangle are you just leaving them in there until the next feeding and potty break??
So I assume you do this all through the day like this? Doing the triangle? Morning thru night?
Love all of your advice!!
Great advice but what to do throutthe evening if only 90minutesin crate, is dog outside at night and brought in for one 90minute session?
How long after feeding an adult dog in crate as adviced in the vedio do you let them out to do their business? 1.5 to 2 hours??
I don’t know if I missed this part but what do I do before and after the process, keep her out of the crate? In the crate? Or outdoors?
I have the same question
You do this triangle throughout the day, over and over. It’s how you spend the day
@@bandbporterWhat if you have a job?
@@beckysbeautifulmess depends on the job. But I’m not sure someone who works 8+ hrs and commutes should be getting a dog, especially a puppy
How do you potty train multiple small dogs? I have 3 small rescues that I am struggling with
@Brandon McMillan do you have any tips for a Boston terrier that sneaks around in the night and poops and eats it?

Should a dog thats been so abused for so long even be made to use a crate?
I would think NO
@@cheesecakefan4880 a crate gives them security. It is their own place. Imagine how you would feel if you didn’t have a bedroom in your house
🤔
How do we apply for an opportunity? I have PTSD from years of DV and have a beautiful big loving home that is just missing my little soul mate
Any tips or tricks for doing this with two dogs, same age, at once?
How can I adjust this method for my rescue dog that is totally not treat-motivated and very skittish/anxious?
The crate close to the door... Hm OK but if we live in a flat (4th floor for example) any tricks for potty training?
We just rescued 2 senior dogs. Scout, an 11 yr old Bichon and Leo, a 14 yr old Yorkipoo. Is it possible to potty train these two at the same time? I put a diaper on Leo after every walkie cuz he is constantly marking … even after a long walkie. HELP……
When you leave the dog by the area where they peeped in the house for 15-20 minutes, do you leave the mess or clean it up first?
Any tips? She can hold it overnight.
how do you do this in a condo
I've watched a few videos on this including the Masterclass. The Masterclass suggests 3 hours of crate time to start out, but this video suggests 90 min. What is most appropriate for a 2 month old puppy?
What about if you work? will they be in longer?
Would you do the same with 9 week old lab?
So what do you do when you have more than one dog? One a time o all can be trained at the same time?
I have an English bulldog and he barks like crazy when I try this method. What do I do to make him feel more cozy he’s 4 months old I really need help
so are we supposed to do this everyday or just for those 2 weeks that we have the dog just to teach them what to do??
When house training, my 6 month golden is keep biting any stuff and not listening my instruction. What can I do? Thanks
