    🐶 Thanks for watching! In the comments below, tell me one of your biggest challenges with potty training your puppy?

    • @nathanperry5173
      @nathanperry5173 4 года назад +5

      My biggest challenge is that I give my puppy too much freedom to walk around the house. I also let her play too long before I take her out.
      Most of the time, I feel like I could have prevented my puppy from having the potty accident in the house.

      A challenge that I think I'm going to have is when I leave my puppy home alone for a while and dont have a pee pad it wont be able to hold it in until I get home. Do you think I should still not use one?

      One of my challenge is being able to tell whether or not he's gone potty when we're outside!

    • @francescarandazzo1295

      My biggest problem is that when we bring my puppy out to pee, he doesn’t. Instead he pees the minute we bring him inside

  • @nathanperry5173
    @nathanperry5173 4 года назад +69

    That is an excellent suggestion about limiting my puppy's access to 1 room until they can be trusted.
    I used to let my puppy follow me around the house but I sometimes get distracted and miss my puppy's signal and than I turn around and they have had an accident on the floor, and I missed it.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  4 года назад +9

      Yes, limiting access is only temporary until they can earn another room or be trusted...which takes time as your puppy grows and matures

    Mitchelle - brought a puppy yesterday in a crate from Pennsylvania to NJ in a CRATE! Following puppy schedule from your website and no potty accidents yet (5/5 score). So much so he waited in his crate till I cleared the snow to create a place for him. Pee accidents is a thumbs down. I took him out, waited in cold storm cold and he did business on getting inside. One more thing - spreading food in crate worked effortlessly for positive association !!!! He cries a little bit when he wakes up. I wasnt aware puppies can have a very loud crying
    Thanks a ton for all the videos.

    I’m a combat veteran who just got a 18 month old, long-haired chihuahua that was rescued from bad living conditions and surviving parvovirus treatment. I’ve had Jasper 4days and he is definitely not doing well. He is my ESA, yet I kind of lost it tonight. I’ve had trouble getting him to respond to my commands and now know a new approach to dealing with the frustration of commands and properly communicating for potty training. I want to thank you for teaching me positive reinforcement and responsible access inside. I’d rather encourage him with love and understanding as opposed to barking orders like I was a dog. He’s just like a toddler, always wanting to be picked up and held, which I love and need from an emotional support aspect. In retrospect, I realize now I have to put in the work (with empathy) first so that I don’t get overwhelmed. It seems like this is one of those moments of “this is going to hurt me more than it does you.” I remember how my father used to say that right before a spanking. I want to make this a team/family alliance rather than a who’s got the bigger balls. Thank you so much.

      Getting dogs from (bad living situations) can be harder to train. I trained dogs for years, still do. Training does take consistency but can be hard if said dog has had emotional or physically abuse. And bad living enviroments. They may be used to peeing in one room, or outside. Until they are rescued which makes it harder to be trained. Ive trained all ages. It can be done with most. But does take time.

    I just found your videos. This is day #3 owning our 12 week old puppy. Potty training has gone well. I don’t have treats but give praise when he potties outside. Guess I’ll need to buy treats. Right now he’s confined in our large kitchen until he’s house broken. Sleeping has been an issue and so far he’s not a fan of his crate. We will continue working on this. I’m 64, not much energy so am hoping my standard poodle puppy will continue doing good! Thanks for your videos!

    You shouldn’t rlly treat with food for potty training do it with play because the can phantom pee squat down and pretend to go and then come in the house and pee so reward with a quick play session or something still building a positive association!!

    Issue with 1 room training is, you are still teaching to use bathroom inside. Doggy doors are best. Best thing to do is have the pup with you as much as possible. Every single time it whines, wakes up, does circles, starts sniffing or eats/drinks water then take it outside. Take it for many walks & try to have a safe enclosed location outside where they can go thru out the day. They love using potty outside. Use Amonia to clean up accidents. I use amonia & vinegar. Clorox wont even take their scent off the floor. Also every time they potty outside give praise, hugs kisses treats etc. But remember a treat can trigger a poop. I train labs & goldens for a living. I have house trained many. Crates are never used for punishment. Thanks. Any questions, feel free to ask.

      It's best if you keep a log of her schedule because her potty habits are probably not regular every 2 hours. She'll have to go more frequently when she plays and less when she's resting. It will also be important to keep her freedom limited in the house. This free kit can help you! www.howtotrainadreamdog.com

    I’m working on getting my puppy to potty outside (yes, we started in the house and before you say it, yes I know bad idea 😭) I know his routine now and when he has to go but he’s so use to using the pads. For example, I took him out yesterday for about 20 minutes when I got home from work (no accidents In his kennel) and he would not go. Soon as we get inside, he goes straight to the pads! We are ordering the spray today and bells for sure! My family tells me to do the whole nose thing and I’m just like no you can do that with your dog I’m not doing it with mine.

The living room, my work room RUG! He doesn't understand anything yet. I took him outside twice for a while, he did nothing. Immediately we got inside, he went immediately. This morning same thing, didn't go but back indoors he did. Why indoors? AND he likes to bite and chew! Help!

    We are having a hard time predicting their pooping schedule...when our 2 puppies wake up, almost always they pee AND poo. Then they have breakfast, but after waiting the 10-15 min after, most of the time there's nothing. So we crate them, but they may be in there for 40 min (crating each time there's no poo). If we don't crate them and let them play and run, a poo comes, but it's not in the poo spot. Any suggestions?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Год назад

      How long have your puppies been home? It takes some time to figure out their natural schedule. If they are going outside together, they might also be distracting each other and not getting the job done. They might also need some movement (running, sniffing) in order to get ready for a poo. Have you seen our free kit with great potty training advice? www.howtotrainadreamdog.com
      Check out our video on littermates too. It contains some important information on littermate syndrome and how to train two puppies at the same time: ruclips.net/video/p_RDIS9yoVo/видео.html

      @@HowToTrainADreamDog Thanks for the feedback! They've been home about 4 weeks now. I do think movement is needed but then they're out running around and poo in any area of the yard, which I don't want. We got your training program and after a few days of properly tracking, I think they take a bit longer than 10-15m for the poo. I will for sure watch the littermates video and how to train 2 dogs at the same time! Thanks!

    How much water should we leave out for a 6month old pup.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Год назад

      The general rule of thumb is that dogs should drink at least 1 oz. of water per pound of dog. But that also depends a lot on weather and activity level and they might need more. We don't recommend restricting water entirely, but you can make sure your pup isn't gulping or consuming a lot of it just before bedtime. Offer small amounts in the evening if you are having trouble with potty accidents at night.

    My puppy is 9 weeks, the breeder instructed us to not let him go outside. We have had him for three days, at first he was using the pee pad but today he pooped and peed on the floor. We are nervous about letting him go outside because we don’t know what kind of animals have been out there. He only has his first round of vaccines. What if a bug lands on him? Or a sick animal was there previously? Sorry we are new to all of this. Please help!
