The whole purpose of sanctions is to punish the citizens of that country, creating chaos through economic warfare, which hopes leading up to a civil unrest and a war so US can move in with their military. Note that Asian Russia already has a sea as a buffer between them and Japan, Mongolia as a buffer for most of China, and Kazakhstan as a buffer for the rest of Central Asia. It would only force Russia to reconsider options that will make them less vulnerable to economic sanctions. And that is by securing strategic assets (like Ukraine) that will give them economic leverage over Europe.

While Russia control the island for now, it is very vulnerable if it doesn't have access to Ukrainian mainland. Finally Ukraine is a major buffer zone that separate Russia from Europe. Without it under their control, NATO can just park their forces in Ukraine and would practically make Moscow a stone throw away from NATO forces.

Sactions never were terribly effective, much less such selective and symbolic. Also times have changed: 40-50 years ago "West" was semi united and held all the card: technology & agricultural production. Now Russia is simply prepared after previous financial crisises, has very low foreign debt and can buy what they need and wherever they want. Times of meaningful COCOM are over.

Agree. And as EU and NATO don't do anything about this, this is grossly affecting the hope you guys have for those organizations. Obviously sanctions don't have the expected result we would like them to have. As an EU supporter and observer I really hope this conflict gets resolved without more bloodshed. Sadly EU doesn't have much military power to deal with Russia right now and this conflict is like walking on the edge of a blade. How we handle this will determine how Putin will act in the future, not just with Ukraine, but with other sovereign countries as well. Hopefully Putin is as scared as the other nations of starting a new world war and wouldn't act more aggressively.

Remember, Russia did not take Crimea from Ukraine! It is the rulers of Ukraine who, during the 23 years of independence, have done everything possible to make the inhabitants of Crimea (and all of Ukraine) live poorly. Therefore, the inhabitants of Crimea, out of desperation, asked Russia to take them into its composition. It is a pity that Pupin did not bomb Kiev in 2014, I hope this will happen this year (I myself live in Kiev).

The NATO nations should use the pipeline as a bargaining chip when dealing with Russia to stop them from invading Ukraine. Having NATO troops on the ground and at sea is the best thing to do right now and as many as possible to deter an invasion.

Russia's Long term cost of NOT invading Ukraine was not discussed. China openly stating that it would support Russia's taking part of Ukraine. Russia supplies the majority of gas, oil, natural gas, etc from Russia's pipeline to supply many Western European countries' winter energy needs. Not discussed that China needs Russia because Russia supplies significant oil and gas to China from pipelines and also tankers. This leads me to believe that if NATO and/or US invoke sanctions then China will support Russia and then the follow up question is can Western Europe and USA afford to sanction both Russia and China at the same time.... The whole purpose of sanctions is to punish the citizens of that country, creating chaos through economic warfare, which hopes leading up to a civil unrest and a war so US can move in with their military. Sanctions can target individuals but can't hurt anyone powerful or rich in any country. NK is one of the poorest countries out there, has sanctions done anything to it at all? does NK really have any business with any countries that dislike them in the first place? If NK doesn't care about sanctions, why would Russia care at all.

USA is more powerful than ussr in terms of economic strength, geography and quite comparable militarily. Putin will not be here in 25 years. In 25 years the USA will still be most or second most vibrant economy in the world and still capable of supporting our huge military. So far, no one has explained to me how we (I'm from germany) are able to pay our gas bills, if russia is snctioned with swift. I doubt russia is willing to deliver gas for free.

No. Russia has done whatever it feels is necessary regardless of a threat of sanctions. They are more worried about NATO expansion.
Understand this. Putin has done very little to get Russia ready for the economic growth the world will have in the coming decades. Putin wins r short term. The winners will be the nations that push education, trade with military partners, technology, innovation, culture etc. USA still nation everyone wants to come to for college and to live. Our culture is robust and if we stay that way, we will be more than ok. Fortunately for us, russia is working off a 20th century playbook. Where will russia be after Putin? Where will USA be after trump and Biden? USA will survive and prosper after those 2 r gone.

Russia has plenty of power on the field and WILL utilize it in a swift attack that will at least secure up to the Dnieper River. What happens next will likely see more Eastern European Nations including the remaining parts of the Ukraine joining NATO. IF I was in charge of those Russian forces I would tale all of the Ukraine as a demonstration of resolve. They have the combat strength in the field to do it.

Without a robust economy, a nation will eventually be weakened militarily. I have a background in economics and so I tend to focus on the long term.

@@3xitthissid3 not really. Note that Asian Russia already has a sea as a buffer between them and Japan, Mongolia as a buffer for most of China, and Kazakhstan as a buffer for the rest of Central Asia. The only border that really needs guarding is the strip with China.

Ukraine is a major transit point for Russian gas pipelines to EU. That is why it is important to Russia.
Then there is Crimea which houses Russia Navy in the Black Sea. While Russia control the island for now, it is very vulnerable if it doesn't have access to Ukrainian mainland.
Finally Ukraine is a major buffer zone that separate Russia from Europe.
Without it under their control, NATO can just park their forces in Ukraine and would practically make Moscow a stone throw away from NATO forces.

Sactions never were terribly effective, much less such selective and symbolic. Also times have changed: 40-50 years ago "West" was semi united and held all the card: technology & agricultural production. Now Russia is simply prepared after previous financial crisises, has very low foreign debt and can buy what they need and wherever they want. Times of meaningful COCOM are over.

Obviously sanctions don't have the expected result we would like them to have. As an EU supporter and observer I really hope this conflict gets resolved without more bloodshed. Sadly EU doesn't have much military power to deal with Russia right now and this conflict is like walking on the edge of a blade. How we handle this will determine how Putin will act in the future, not just with Ukraine, but with other sovereign countries as well. Hopefully Putin is as scared as the other nations of starting a new world war and wouldn't act more aggressively.

Why would Putin want Ukraine to join NATO? Can we see why he might object to that? Keep NATO from Putin's Border, leave the Donbas alone; I don't think it would have come to this. We could try securing our own Border first.

Russia's Long term cost of NOT invading Ukraine was not discussed. China openly stating that it would support Russia's taking part of Ukraine. Russia supplies the majority of gas, oil, natural gas, etc from Russia's pipeline to supply many Western European countries' winter energy needs. Not discussed that China needs Russia because Russia supplies significant oil and gas to China from pipelines and also tankers. This leads me to believe that if NATO and/or US invoke sanctions then China will support Russia and then the follow up question is can Western Europe and USA afford to sanction both Russia and China at the same time.... Thoughts please.

If you want a reliable military force and you want good infrastructure, you need tax revenue. None of that stuff is free. And what we don't want is the middle/lower class paying for all of it.
