Tom Mason and his wife are buried on the east side of FM road 1191 north west of Jacksboro. I believe I heard as a kid that it was Charles Goodnight who found em. Mr. Goodnight then went to Issac Lynns cabin which I understand was somewhere eat of Hwy 281, north of Jacksboro. Mr. Lynn was Toms daddy in law. As Mr. Goodnight rode up the cabin he could hear some crackling. It was a cold rainy night as I recall hearing. Mr. Lynn had killed a couple of Comanches I guess, scalped em and was frying the scalps which were hanging off a couple of sticks. The year was either 1856 or 1858. I was told that the graves are where the attack took place. This story was told to me by an old timer from the area. He was in his 80's in the 1960's. I've been to the Mason's grave many times, I just cant remember the dates right now. The tombstone says, "Tom Mason and wife, killed by the Indians" Then the date. This will give me a reason to drive back down there and have a look see. The grave is just inside the barbed wire fence, in a chain link fence. Very visible from the road, if ya know where to stop without getting creamed by the north bound traffic. Thanks

Depredations of the Indian. Great title! Greed will do unreasonable thinking of us who think what a great opportunity exists for our family if we just risk our life and limb to acquire a property the owners think are theirs? Of course, the Indian people don't know the land settled by Homesteaders are legal by the new Government! In their minds, "Who the Hell are these people who do as they want"? Treating them as they have all people invading their lands. Of course, who are these people that come out in unsettled country and risk themselves and family and knowing vicious people still live there! They were just acting as usual when invaders come! Depredations? This is what the settles were risking their lives for? J. Christ! Empty guns, Malfunction guns? Even if their guns were fine, they would have not lasted long! Brave folks for sure!
