2CV: A tale of snow and rear brake pipes

- We travel 150 miles to Derbyshire, after a snowy start, to visit Peak 2CV where a two-post lift makes life much easier for replacing the rear brake pipes. It's a job I've never done before, so applying some expertise was certainly useful! I still managed to break something...
Peak 2CV is at peak2cv.co.uk/
The HubNut store can be found via www.hubnut.org - Авто/Мото
Elly handles so well. She does not want to break traction even though she rolls a lot. I appreciate the ride out in paradise. Thank you Ian Pete 🇬🇧
Great video. Excellent. I haven't had time to keep up with all your great videos, I'm running behind - Kudos to you! Keep up the good work. Glad "Peak 2CV" is preserving his 1971 ex-Provence 400 Van, and not restoring it. I think he said "...surface rust, very beautiful!" Quite; patina can be fragile, irreplaceable and err, beautiful. Many thanks for your work.
Just watching this again. Stunning snowscapes, and countryside. Love the sound of the 2CV.
This brings back so many memories.
Love the sound of a 2cv engine Elleys sounds particularly good with the conversation 👍 Like the sound of a hubnut meeting 😀
Great video again. I have that real feel good feeling now. Hub Nut in can't get enough of your videos 👍
I have had to restrict my hub nut intake,
much like some types of air box.
Brilliant ,just watching this again and I love Wirksworth .I'll have to book my 2CV in for the rear brake pipes !!
Oh for some snow....... we are heading for 30 plus degrees next week 😔. What a mighty trip and a mighty good job👍and what a great looking workshop too. I could sit in there drink tea and chat all day 😊
12'30" Running that bar heater via a 13 amp domestic extension.... Pretty soon it'll be so warm in there even the fire brigade will come along to see it.
'Shush!' 🤣
HubNut - I can't get enough of your videos.
Hilarious stuff 😂
A nice start with the journey through the snowy landscape.
I'm probably the only one here who enjoyed the brief gaze at that Daihatsu Fourtrak. I've been obsessed with these ever since I thrashed a 1987 one round my mate's field when I was 7, now I'm 20 and own one myself, a 1990 leaf sprung turbo SWB with van panels. More smiles per gallon than you'll get out of any modern pile of crap! Next week will mark the 4th year of (pretty much trouble free!) ownership!
The snow landscape has some views to die for 🙂 But there was one more thing that I loved...the two Citroen Zx! Hummm...Zx 😁
Not many bad views in Wales
Great video Ian! Such a beautiful country for a drive!
Great story and loved the snowy Welsh scenery. The brake pipe change was really helpful. Well done on another great production!
Had a bloody awful day just the tonic...cheers for another great vid ...as a newcomer I'm watching them all out of sequence :) hubnut HQ looks idyllic even in the snow
Hi Ian great video the snow was so pretty glad your brakes are sorted.
Soon as you hit the Derbyshire road. Knew where you were going. I'm a volunteer at the railway next door to your friend.
Pop in and say hi!
great great video sir, thank you, made me smile many many times for different reasons
Love how much you use the 2CV - it certainly makes for some interesting drives through the Welsh countryside in them kind of conditions!
Excellent video as always Ian. Many thanks. Elly is looking good with her new brake pipes.
A 'Hub Nut' meeting sounds like a great idea. I really look forward to hearing more details.
All the best.
Very cool. The scenery was great 👍I Have the same heater issues.
Hello Ian,what a great video,so that is how its done for the brake lines at the back, its funny weather, snow at first then perfect after, the back axles are freshly painted now and looks awesome.
Really enjoyed that video never new how complex the brake pipes were what a great piece of engineering 👍
Entertaining as always. You're a braver man than I driving on those snowy Welsh roads!
Watching this from Minnesota. Looks like a beautiful day there.
What a great workshop! Love the series 1 landy tucked beside it!
Seems a little cheeky looking at ellys under sides but she’s looking good!
Great video (as usual).
Thoroughly enjoyed it👍
Thanks once again for another visit to the innards of a 2CV. I’ve been learning a lot from these episodes. Compared to what I’m accustomed to (MG), the 2CV is just plain weird... but very clever. Also, I see that you fellows share the two most important tools in my toolbox; patience and a sense of humor. What a difference they can make! Cheers again from the USA.
I thought I knew all the 2CV bits but I've never seen the spiral brake pipes before, thanks for the knowledge.
My local road has been compacted snow since before New Year so Wales got off lightly,
Another awesome video, thanks Ian.
Nice work Ian! You done a great job there!
Haha!! "Automatic...For The People!"
What a time to REMember that album.... :-P
Enjoyed watching this with my morning cuppa...in my TWC mug of course 😁 nice work all round.
Holmes and Dr Hubnut investigate the mysteries of the 2CV rear breaking system, in The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb.
Lovely Scenery Hubnut
We need more Jonno; a mild antithesis to the Hubnut approach. ;)
Stay warm guys
The wee run will do Elly good 😎👍👍
What a useful tip - keep the wipers off the glass - after motoring for nearly 40yrs, I can still learn! Thanks, Ian 😄
Or put newspaper between screen and blades
Nice video, good to see you getting out and about. I love the sound and thrill of a 2CV at maximum power on the motorway, although it does cause my ears to ring afterwards. I actually enjoy going for a drive out in the snow, but then I am a bit of a mentalist. I overtook someone on a snowy road, going uphill the other day because they obviously hadn't planned for the hill and bottled it halfway up. I find the key is to pick a reasonably low gear and keep a constant, very slight light throttle and allow the speed to drop ever so slowly as you approach the crest of the hill, lest you try applying more power and then cause the wheel slip.
Anyway, a hubnut meet on March the 9th would be most welcome, this is a day before I fly away on holiday and would be such an epic start to it!! It would be great to finally meet you.
HubNut hat's very useful at keeping your head and ears warm when walking large dogs around a cold and damp Saffron Walden :)
Wow very ❄ icey and cold and lot's of snow looks like Northumberland couple of weeks ago
What a perfect car for snowy conditions 👍
That black ZX Volcane is lovely. ❤️
silicon lube for your door rubbers, standard here in sweden, you should consider windscreen blower heaters for motorboats..yes they work in snowy weather too!probably even on a 2cv!
I can see now why you needed the ramp ! Well done
Great vid as usual and the meeting in March is good news.
Excellent video Ian thanks.👍🇬🇧
You've just reminded me of a horrible nightmare that I'd forgotten. I changed the rear brake pipes on my 2CV many years ago - what a pain of a job - trying to thread the ends of the pipes out of the holes in the rear axle - took ages!
This really wasn't that bad, but it's much easier with the car on ramps. Old pipes came out no problem bar the rounded pipe ends at the wheel end. Getting them back in went well too.
I wonder if we'll ever see the day when HubNut gets a lift! I'm kind of surprised you don't have one with the size of your fleet, but you'd definitely need a new garage for one. If I ever do choose to get my own place that isn't an inner-city apartment, I'm definitely going to be getting a lift. They make everything so much easier, it's like a cheat code for car mechanics.
I remember years ago buying a stick on rear windscreen heater ,not sure which car it was for , I’ve had lots of weird and wonderful cars in my early days . One of my favourites was a Citroen Ami 8 estate same engine as your 2 CV .
Great Vid Ian, loved that ZX Volcane! The top spec model, I had the base REFLEX 1.9 non turbo model, “with all the performance of the Albert memorial!”
Yes the Derbyshire Peak District is lovely, not all that far away from me really in Leek, North Staffs!
Elly does have a distinct rattle going on somewhere, hope it doesn’t become too serious! I bet the brakes are much better now with those new pipes and fresh brake fluid.
Brakes feel no different. I did a rear brake overhaul in 2017.
Like your jacket and that black zx!
Ian. What! My garage, 1 DIY Pit, compared to the professional garage. Utterly loved this video. Cheers
Once upon a time Ian, weather never stopped me. For starters I had to go 12 miles to work on untreated roads across the Lincolnshire Wolds, 3 years on a motorbike, 1 in a car. Did not fall off, or crash. One occasion it was snowing heavily, they suggested I go home (Ulceby near Alford). I was in my 'boy racer' Mini. Came to Dalby hill. Stationary traffic. Decided to try, no one moaned. Crawled up in 2nd wheel slightly to the right, used throttle for steering. Made it home....snowed in for a week....6ft drifts.
Good to see Jono is a Guy Martin fan
Ian it was good to see you driving a bit slower. And Johno was brave to leave you in his garage !
Watching the cold Elly makes me appreciate the fact that the tractors at my work have block heaters... Pre-heated coolant make for a comfier morning .. The only option for Elly must something external.... And it's quite a trick to make a white manual diesel ZX into a black automatic petrol ZX...
Nice job 👍👍👍
R.E.M -Automatic For The People. A fine album!
I didn't think you ever took Elly out when the roads were covered in snow due to rust concerns? The best scenic views of any RUclips channel in my opinion. Lol. The heating situation makes me think of the classic VW beetle which put out mediocre heat due to it being a rear engine air cooled vehicle. Our neighbors had one when I was growing up and it would drive through any amount of snow but the defrosters hardly worked and you froze before you got to your destination. Smiles.
I took her off the road last year to avoid the salt, and she repaid me by not running right for several weeks. She has made her feelings known on the matter, so it's back to all-year use.
@@HubNut Yeah, I just took my old classic out for a local spin. Wasn't too happy with me since I hadn't started or moved her in like 4 months. Elly rocks!
A very informative and useful video. I enjoyed the witty banter. I think it would be ok to drill small holes in the suspension arms to inject wax into them. Done at the top, the holes would not be under tension.
That's a good idea. The suspension arms must bounce around like mad. The oil would go everywhere.
Another job that's a 'Good 'Un'! Lovely little workshop he has there. Nice C15 van outside, too. Got to love a ramp (and a garage tall enough to fit one) or an inspection pit. My last place had a barn with an inspection pit in it - I miss that a lot!
Video to come on the C15.
Excellent - love small vans!
That would be a fun video. Can't wait.
Hubnut, your dedication and commitment to old bangers is impressive lol. You must really love cars, I’m sympathetic to diy fixing up old cars but my problem is I haven’t got the facilities unfortunately..but I’m learning stuff from your vids all the time 👍
I didn't have a garage until I was 29. Those early days were a pain.
HubNut I’ve been there!!! Fixing cars in all weathers...brrrr!
I must admit that helical arrangement for the brake pipes is sheer genius - *far* better than a rubber pipe in that position.
Cardboard is the floor for winners..... again Hub Nut strikes gold for a new bit o merch.....
and yes I would buy that.
So long as you're not doing lots of welding, in which case it becomes the floor for pyromaniacs...
@@gosportjamie yeah i love the spray can next to the heater if i did that you would just see the flames ..
@@carlbarton772 Yup, it takes practice to do that and NOT end up blowing yourself out of the garage head-first and on fire...
@@gosportjamie lol, project car garages should come with a stunt double.
Sarahs surname is similar to mine... I like chockys too. Cadence braking, now there is something I haven't had to do for a very long time.I spent this morning working on a mates 1955 Mercedes and in his storage building he has the German equivalent of the 2 CV, a DKW F89 .A real barn stored car in quite nice nick and one two imported to OZ in 1954.. If he ever gets it driving it would interesting to compare it to a 2 CV.
Watching this video shook up my memory. Completely forgotten I owned a red ZX 14i Avantage about 14 years ago😂 Thanks for the reminder 😜
I sooo want that little gray van, looked like department 14 last 2 digits of the reg plate. I wouldn't change a thing cosmetically just oozes character , which is as it should be.
@@eeclass20 I think it's a Citroen C15
nice to a ZX again - my ZX Volcane TD was one of my cars that i miss
Thy Holy Kettle of Hub Nut and the blessing of the fleet.
I don't think I've ever seen an automatic ZX Volcane before. I didn't even know there was such a thing... With bonus lovely ruched leather too...
Great cars in the snow the Citroen 2CV.
Wow your 2cv friend has one rare car now, those Citroen ZX Volcane's are rare (especially a automatic one). My mom used to have a manual transmission ZX Volcane and she loved it, but unfortunately it failed it's MOT on emissions back in the early 2000's.
That black ZX is a nice piece of kit! Save for the chav pipe singing the sounds of the autobox... for the people! #wellposh
I had some damp creep into my ignition but soon saw that off, utterly frozen cold the old Reliant was but two seconds on the key and she's roaring into life, jug of warmish water over the ice on the screen and she's off like a three wheeled rocket. Was seriously brake checked today as well pootling along at 40 and the cars in front slamming on the anchors and the 1950's era drum brakes did their job a treat and was alarmed this 4x4 behind me was getting larger in me rear view mirror leaving it to the last moment to brake O.o Can't wait for the snow, you will find with your Invacar how much fun snow is for three wheelers, they will brave the roads 4 wheeled cars will struggle on cos the front wheel sits in the unused part of the snow meaning you have traction rather than mushy ice.
I found the opposite last year. Front wheel just rides the much in the middle and bounces all over the shop. Awful.
I like the REM reference... Good album.
there must be another Elly and hub nut out there
The timing gun always reminds me of the many times i had to replace the gunsons timing gun after just a few uses after the light kept blowing haha.
My car has just passed the mot (13 months) and a good job too with 8 hours of preparing it beforehand.
One of the jobs i did was I cleaned up my brake pipes with wd40 because garages like to fail it on these with just a bit of surface rust on it which is very naughty lol.
I like to mot my car asap incase something seriously goes wrong leading up to the mot running out haha.
Oh It just failed on one thing the licence plate bulb had blown and failed the mot and was classed as "repair immediately (major defects)" what.
Anyway just a bit of corrision to clean off and a new bulb and it passed.
Good video ian keep up the good work.
Ha ha ha ha, loved this video! It's like watching a couple of old ladies with the banter and bickering going on between you and Jono! :-P Jono appears to be like most mechanics I have know, very dry, but with a good sense of humour! :-) Very handy having that lift, I think that would be a very touch job on a trolley jack or a couple of ramps!
Looking forward to the meet up not far from me so I’ll be able to Make that one
Grea video. Winter is pretty at times but I still hate it lol
Geez, you 2 were like The Ronnies bickerin back n forth, well, more him taking shots at you really, lol. What i'd give to find a van like his project in the back corner. nice hooning scenery.
Very enjoyable video. Oddly enough Ian my bug had an advisory on the Mot for the front brake hoses 🤔
Should be an easy fix though? Flexi hoses tend to be a bit easier. As long as the unions come apart...
@@HubNut Yes they are flexi and I hope they come apart nicely. I just don't like playing with Dot brake fluid, nasty stuff.
Indeed so!
Be glad when the cold weather goes away and the not as cold weather arrives in the UK.
More cold to come yet...
love the s1 land rover m8
Hope the little end knock doesn't spell disaster... That's why I asked if you shouldn't revise the bottom end too when increasing the power with the 652cc setup. Nice video anyway!
The bottom ends can take a lot more than this. Just hoping I didn't damage a little end when fitting. Time will tell.
Yay, we have the same kettle! Ours has more chrome left... ;-)
You have to get acquainted with WD40 or RP7. Miracle in a can. Best thing since duct tape. Spray a bit in the locks and they'll never freeze plus they'll work perfectly (probably outlast the car). Same for all the little things that need a bit of lubrication like the wipers, vents, what have you. Heck, with some liberal application I bet you'll be able to remove the Titanic rivets by hand.
Never too cold for 'hood fully open' action.
Must be Wirksworth....had a few beers in The Malt Shovel
You really have to love the crazy engineering of the 2CV and hats off to mrs hub nut if that was me and my mrs id have been out there de - frosting the cars on my own
Those tyres are so narrow! You're a brave man indeed driving through snow and ice with just a tiny amount of contact :O
Entirely the opposite. On snow and ice, you want skinny tyres to bite through and find grip. Have a look at World Rally Cars in snow trim.
Looked like Elly had a nice weekend at the spa, even if it wasn't at the weekend, or a spa... :D
great video m8
nice vid Mr hub
The term "hot pursuit" would be perfectly applied to 2cvs
The faster you go the warmer you get haha
(not saying you'd get chased by the police)
Let's hope you left a hub nut wooly hat just to say thanks
I drilled my bx rear arms and added grease nipples for additional maintaince and service life
Do miss my zx even though those door locks used to freeze and although we could get in you had to hold the door closed whilst driving as it wouldn't latch until it had warmed up inside
Your Spanners are never rusty have French motors I have three never ever done German
Oh yes! I well remember BXs and the freezing door lock thing. Jono is far too good at losing hats, so he had to make do with some stickers and actual money instead.
Gas line anti freeze/ methyl hydrate works very well unfreezing doors and locks. Unlike water, does not freeze up again.
I don't know if it's available there or not!
Yes, there's just something about Citroëns isn't there? I've been driving a C5 Exclusive for more than 10 years, but these old skool jobs are something else! Particularly enjoyed the gatherings you videoed, when you had a whole bunch of like-minded people with their 2CVs, Amis and Dyanes.
Should be more of that this year. Citroen Centenary celebrations in UK and France!
A friend of mine had a ZX for years. Very cheap and very very reliable car that was.
They're great! I loved my diesel SX, but couldn't resist swapping it for that Volcane!
Hubnut meet and greet at last!
