If it weren't for RUclips, incredible videos like this would be lost to this and future generations. We are grateful!!
This whole album is one of the best blues albums ever produced. The sax solo to this tune is one of the best ever, powerful, technical, emotional.
George Washington jr is almost as great cmon now.
@@MitchClement-il6iq No argument there.
He's from my home town.
Any one watching this in 2022].amazing . I've seen him when I was 5yrs old and still love him. I'm 75 now.
Few hours watching tenormen on YooToob & I come back for some meat n'gravy KC! I'm 77...beat ya'!
R.I.P. Aretha, Champion Jack Dupree and his Son Cornell, and The great King Curtis Ousley on Saxofon. Go on up there.
Cornell Dupree was not Jack's son. He was joking on that show.
@@stanjarin7779 I wondered about that too
King Curtis knows when to come in. Excellent performance by ALL.
I don't care who you are , where you are from , or even what language you speak, you can not help but to EXPERIENCE this song and it will get you EVERY time!
The great blues and boogie-woogie pianist Champion Jack Dupree teamed up with the well-loved King Curtis, man of the saxophone, for a special combined set at the 1971 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971. Rounding out the band on this version of “Poor Boy Blues” was Cornell Dupree on guitar, bassist Jerry Jemmott holding down the low end, and Oliver Jackson on the drums. Tragically, King Curtis - who was known for his spectacular and diverse playing in blues, rock, R&B, soul, funk and jazz, would be murdered in cold blood only a few short months later in August of 1971. This video shows that he was still in peak form and the prime of his career when he died. To this day he remains one of the most fondly remembered sax players in all of blues and roots music. Enjoy this terrific collaborative performance!
Thanks so much for sharing this info
VERY THANK YOU !!
Blessings
This is one's of all my favorites of all times, damm alk te disc is superb
Yes,although my favourite is Lee Allen
Only saw King Curtis at The Fillmore West leading a big band Backing Aretha Franklin in the legendary Live Recording...Ray Charles was brought up to perform..Beyond Belief!!Was allowed in during the Rehearsals and witnessed some of the greatest perform!Philip Wilson and Keith Knudsen and I were just blown away!!I remember Atlantic Records VIP Jerry Wexler IN A TAN TRENCH COAT encouraging the band as this was an Epic Performance!!Thank u for posting this Dupree selection!!!
King Curtis is amazing. Cornell plays his guitar wonderfully, look at how King is impressed by the guy.
King Curtis was and still is the best sax player of all time.
I had this album 47 years ago when I was in junior high.. It was my favorite blues album then and after listening to it again after not hearing it for decades, it has become my favorite again.
It starts and the first we see the "Queen of the Soul", Aretha Franklin, sitting in the audience, admiring Champion Jack's and King Curtis's fine blues playing... Today the Queen joined the King and the Champion in Heavens, God bless their souls! :-(
there is no heaven also no Santa Claus …

I feel richer in my soul having seen this. Beautiful.
Two very special, under-appreciated musicians at the very top of their skills. Great performance, resonating through the ages, then, now, forever!
This shows that some music is timeless.
At age 67 years, I must be excused for stating that this music is the real thing - soothing in its own way - philosophical!
THABO RANGAKA I agree with you, I got five years on you and first heard "Blues from the Gutter" when I was in my early twenties, always a class act.
+John Rankin - "Blues from the Gutter" yep, still have the LP. Many years ago I walked into a pub in Ludgate circus London, and who should be sitting at the piano but Champion Jack! This was during the time that he was living in England.
Wow, lucky you. :-)
THABO RANGAKA at 64, I must agree. I regret I never saw Dupree. Or King Curtis. I was born in New Orleans, raised around Memphis, and they clean got by me!
This Music is the OG of it all, everything COOL can be traced back to the OG Blues NO EXCUSES and CONGRATS for being here to watch this.
That would have been a treat to be there. King Curtis and both Duprees, although I don't think they were related, both were amazing. Cornell Dupree was amazing on guitar and you could see by the smile on King Curtis when he was playing that he was right in the pocket. Everyone on that stage was great and everyone in the audience was lucky to be there.
King curtis, the greatest sax man ever!
Ohhhh man! ... Music the way God meant it to be heard .. music made in Heaven to soothe the souls of we mortals ..every note tells its own story!
Dam this really just hit me hard at 1:48, Just lost my Mother back in Aug and her Birthday is in 3 days. Snow is so deep here I can't even go to the cemetery, Lost my Father back in 85, He was a musician in a Rockabilly band back in the 60's.
Thx for the song and video, Pain is a struggle everyday in my life but The jams keep me going......Peace
My condolences brother.
God bless you and may your folks RIP... Music heals...
I'm sorry for your loss and prayers for you and family from me and mine, may your mother rest in heaven 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Likewise. But you handle it. That's what we do.
I'm sorry to hear that...
Joyful blues. Effortless intensity. The wonderful King Curtis and Champion Jack Dupree. So grateful to whoever uploaded this.
Cornell, on guitar. What a great player!
He passed away a few years ago. All the rockers tried to play like him.
Honorius Soularians true legend that few know, sadly
Magnificent!! This is serious blues. CJD''s vocals and KC's alto make it an absolute monster.
KC is playing tenor on this one. ;)
Yeah, what a complete guitarist. Rock solid rhythm. Good to hear a sweet 12 bar blues solo. What a great band.
I love Champion's music. It has got a narrative message with it. Iistened to a lot of his music and that's distinctly his style. He reminds me of our recently departed Hug Masekela; may his soul rest in peace. They both shared this narrative style of play.
Curtis on the other side is fantastic as ever. He make sacrifices to communicate an understood language. I also like how Cornell makes his guitar talk. He made it to become his friend.
Love from South Africa....
Feel you....®®®
Thankyou Champion Jack Dupree, you inspire me so much. RIP X
Reminds me way back 1990 when I was still a boy among old timers playing strictly blues down in Soweto South Africa, Jack was one of my best pianist, my brother is still plying his music.
John Rakuba I also have very special memories when Jack lived in England my father found out where he was leaving. He was in the town of Halifax North Yorkshire I can still remember going to his home and meeting his wife and Christine his daughter we would be there for hours playing the piano and eating gumbo. What memories we have.
John Rakuba broer wa itse Champ was big with Old Timers and majita a clever. Lovely!!!! Still play him to this day!
The passion on these people faces for their music is AMAZING!!!'!!!!!! Love it
That is some clean playing. Remarkable!
Was too young to know about Montreux by then, but this became my 2nd Live in Montreux Record right after i got me the Live in Montreux Record by Les McCann and Eddie Harris.
They were just the Beginning.
This is the food for my soul I'm in love with it thank you
My mother just gave me all her old lp's. One of them is a lp Mr. Dupree signed for her after a concert in Berlin in 75-76. He said he couldn't write, but still signed it in the end.
Indeed a great Clip with our heroes... Thanks > RHYTHM & BLUES, SOUL, JAZZ-ROCK.24

A very soulful piece of music.. Can't you feel it!
OMG!!!! this is blowing my mind, thanks Fergus Hare for posting this and for the little history on King Curtis, when I was young Soul Serenade and Memphis Soul Stew were popular on the radio but beside those I wasn't familiar with King Curtis' other works and especially not his live performances. So happy that you shared this masterpiece!
Great band, concert and album. Nice mix of great musicians.
A gem. Thanks. What a welcome surprise to see Aretha. GO KING CURTIS!
Play the Blues! Great music, very inspiring.
what can I say, this is wonderfull
I'm 42. I can't stop watching/listening to this. I'm trying to find out where in St. Louis I can witness something like this.
just utterly stunning
wonderful
That King Curtis could BLOW!!!
Of course, he is the king
Outstanding Curtis and Mr. Jack
King Curtis staffing his band with such exceptionally talented musicians - and they wanted to play with him in it. From Yakety Yak to this, via Aretha's MD. In the mid-80s I'd heard, even then, he was the most prolific musician - not just sax player - to have played on the most hit records worldwide.
King was always so smooth, this cut really showcases that. Legit.
GÊNIOS, insubstituíveis, hoje não se encontra iguais a eles, feliz daqueles que viram eles interpretar os seus temais e com a toda a intimidade com seus instrumentos de trabalho. maneco - Brasil.
These men are real musicians

By far has to be the best sax solo ever in any genre of music, if anyone out there knows of something comparable, please let me know.
I prefer his 'A whiter shade of pale'
his tone is the best ever !

I thought it was her and after a bit of digging around discovered she did a duet with Curtis same venue same year. Don't think it was the same night unless she had a clothes change maybe? Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/cMrQ4HMac9s/видео.html
Curtis was Aretha's musical director then, and i think that is Jesse Jackson sitting with her, but i may be wrong. so cool!
So good I watched it twice.
